  • "New Zealand, they played some great rugby but they made a huge amount of unforced errors and that gave Pollard the opportunity...that was the difference between the two teams that Pollard 50 meter kick and that came from South African pressure."
South Africa might not be the best team in the world but they have cracked the World Cup strategy, Stuart Barnes tells Stig Abel on #timesradio

It’s so awful that the Springboks get accused of being what England currently is. Personally, I love the fact that each country plays their own style - I think it makes the sport richer and more interesting. But this Springbok team gave this tournament everything - at times tactical, and times clever and at times bloody brilliant. But of course, because we don’t play New Zealand’s basketball style of rugby, no suddenly it’s “bad for rugby” that the Springboks won. Such sour grapes.

Pieter Stef du Toit made 28 tackles in that game not one of them was high. Shannon Frizell (spelling) was more deserving of a red card. Firstly the neck roll and then falling onto the jackelers leg. Given the skill level of these players that’s a clear professional foul all day long. Getting Bongi off the park was a definite strategy of the AB’s.

    • @BooklessT

As the laws change, the coaches adapt. SA changed a few years ago when they realised breaking the laws will cost you the game. By and large SA play with excellent discipline. Regrettably other nations have been coaching "this is what you'll get away with". I don't think the right message has been spread through NZ. Cane knew he was taking a risk with the cheap shot, and he didn't get away with it.

I agree with you. The tackle on Bongi was intentional. NZ wanted to get Bongi off the field at all costs. To me it was a clear red. Frazell was very lucky. The TMOs in the bunker took a long time to come to a decision. That tells you that they were very close to changing the yellow to a red.

You need to check your facts. SA have played four rugby world cup finals and won four from four = 100% win rate. No other rugby nation has achieved either 4/4 wins or 100% win rate.
Also, the "world cup" for rugby did not apply for the first two cups in 1987 and 1991. South Africa were not allowed to play those cups. Which means New Zealand ("winner" 1987) and Australia ("winner" 1991) did not actually win rugby "world" cups.

Definitely the most adaptable but "the best rugby" is rugby that wins games. The Springboks are 100% capable of playing the most attractive rugby and also grinding out a war. It's also a bit of a counter intuitive statement when pundits and commentators talk about the "best rugby" because they're only talking about attacking and mostly backline play. That's great for sevens but in test match rugby you also need be able to scrum, maul, kick for points, control the game and defend. The fact the Springboks are the best defensively, control the game the best, scrum the best, and probably maul the best, while probably not being the best attacking team but certainly not too far off the best makes them the best overall. Scrums, lineouts, rucks, and mauls are technical and when done right are interesting to watch and make the game varied and exciting. Rugby was never meant to be pretty

I think the thing that many commentators dont get is that the Springboks are all about the team, and the individual players are there to do their brilliant best - for the team. Then their pure determination to win showed through. We beat the best teams when it mattered. We delivered when we needed to. So who played the best rugby is irrelevant. Its called a competition for a reason. And we won. And not just for the sake of winning, but for a higher purpose, for what it means to to the country. That gets my utmost admiration and respect. There is a greatness to this Bok team that many people dont see.

People throw shade on SA's attacking game don't realise that France and sometimes even NZ kick LOADS more than SA do. Finally, on the subject of low-scoring games... if this had been a 12-11 Final between France and Ireland then it would have been touted as the greatest achievement in rugby ever.

Tournament are about who has the best strategy and execution. South Africa lately has been good at that, it seems like they build a team in between world cups to compete at the tournament, wether they lose in that period, they dont mind. And Rassie said it best , “ we dont have the best players in the world, we pick the best players for our system”. So if you have the players to execute your plan or strategy, you will win anything.

I agree with the views on red cards that needs to be looked at.
I do no necessarily think the red card cost NZ. Firstly the red card didn't cause 14 v 15 for most of the game. If is was only a yellow he would have been back at 37. So 43 minutes left. SA had 2 yellows after that so roughly 20 mins. So the red card only resulted in 20 mins of extra 14 v15 vs had it been yellow.
Secondly SA were dominating until the red card. I said at the time this is going to wake NZ and it did. Who knows they might have lost further was it not for the red.

I heard some reports from hotel staff in France/Toulon (who've seen many teams over the years), saying that this Springbok squad is the tightest group they've ever seen.
Also - the adage that SA doesn't play rugby has become very naive - from a technical analysis pnt of view, top flight rugby is a game of chess. Have a look at Squidgerugby's analysis of the final to see what the Boks did to contain the most attacking team in World rugby. What they do off the ball is drastically underrated. IN the 1st half though, they intentionally kept the ball in play. I initially was on the fence about the 7-1 bench split, wondering if it had the desired effect - regarding setpieces, but when looking at the rest of the game plan, it was necessary.

SA by 1995 was the most dominant
Beaten all teams more than being beaten incl NZ
Transformation politics & policies forcing the issue instead of letting it happen naturally had us lose our way through a tumultuous time where NZ reversed that dominance we alao had first loss to Wales for example
Our style of play suffered but under Rassie has been returning
Our record vs NZ past 4 years is 50/50 so of late it is not inferior record. 35-7 at twickenham just before world cup is a record loss by NZ.
On tackles PSDT tackled low each time. Old school days thats how we did it.
Super rugby brought this high tackle style.

They won the world cup and that's it. From 2018 until 2023 all that mattered really to the Boks was to win the world cups. They were building early toward the would cup creating depth in positions to give players experience etc. In the Rugby Championships they play a more running and entertaining brand of rugby, but they don't throw away their strenghts like scrumming, set pieces and their kicking game. Lots of geniuneses in the SA coaching staff. Let's get a hat-trick and make it imposible for any team to do it again. Go Bokke!! 🎉
