- Finland has taken part 47 times in the Eurovision Song Contest. Finland won the contest in 2006. It has placed last a total of nine times and scored zero points three times. Finland has sung in three languages: 32 times in Finnish, 13 times in English and 2 times in Swedish.

I kinda miss the times when people sang more in their native languages instead of english

Finland had some pretty great songs in the 70s and 80s but unfortunately underrated a lot. "Lapponia", "Fantasiaa" and "Eläköön elämä" are pretty epic.
I know this anwet is very late but I agree. People outside Finland and these who got into Eurovision in 21st century most don't know and don't Finnish music before and outside of rock/metal and in English.
And most of all: Nuku pommiin
2006 - Finland: "Fuck this competition, we never win. Let's send some weird shit!"
2007 - Finland: "17th place? Well, yeah. The hosting country usually doesn't win....."
2008 Finland: "WHAT THE HELL EUROPE! YOU LOVED LORDI!!! THis is also ROCK!"
2009 - Finland: "Fuck this competition, lets send eurodisco...."
2010 - Finland: "Ok... serious now Finland. Think... What do people think of when they hear 'Finland'? Gotta catch up with the ethno-trend! OH! Yeah! Throw in an accordion!"
2011- Finland: "Come ooooon now Europe! We do EXACTLY what everybody else does. Send a boring ballad with nonsense lyrics!"
2012 - Finland: "Fuck this competiton! Let the finland-swedes compete this year!"
(Fun fact: Finland-Swedish is the most beautiful dialect in swedish. Source: ME!)

Finland rules the ESC! Katri Helena, Marion, Waldo's People, CatCat, Teräsbetoni, Jari S., Lordi, Laura, Monica Aspelund, Ami Aspelund, Vicky Rosti, Sonia Lumme, Fredi, Pernilla, Krista Siegfrids... All of them had fantastic songs. Greetings from Sweden.

Sampz Yes I know that you have not been so successfull, but I like most of the Finnish songs. It's so cool that you have sent so different kind of songs, schlager, folkmusic, heavy metal, punk, eurodance, ballads...
You forgot Paradise Oskar 2011, who has only decent song(except Lordi or maybe Softengine) in whole 2000's, every other Finnish ESC has been either painful (last 2 years), trash (Krista Sickfrids), stupid (Jari S. 2004), awful yelling (Teräsbetoni) bad 90's (Waldo's) or classless folk (Kuunkuiskaajat 2010) over the last 15 years. xD
Noooo, Krista S, Teräsbetoni and Waldo's were really great. (Paradise Oskar was ok.)
But results speaks themselves, which I'm totally agree. :)Actually some Finnish entries have been so bad, that they wouldn't even deserve that minor 'success',like place in final. xD

Oscar performed first on the show which made voters to forget him. It’s a trend that the winner is someone from the last 12 performers.
Finland had some great songs that have been so overlooked. Should of won in 1979, 1991 & 2007. Lordi wasn't the best Finnish song but I was so pleased for Finland in 2006. Made up for all the years of being overlooked. Hope they won't have to wait as long for their next win.

I have a soft spot for Finland, so many of their songs were underrated,,,,and a lot of their songs I have as my winners (like Playboy, Kun Kello Käy, Katson Sineen Taivaan and others)
To be honest,,,,the underrated countries are my favorites in Eurovision all together.
13:50 criminally underrated. Would have ranked much better hadn't it been for Lordi being first at bringing metal to Eurovision.

people were tired of boring pop ballads. Just the idea of completely different music in the sea of unoriginal and already seen songs was enough 4 the win.
Lordi won because they had something new. Costumes.

As an American Finn. I just have to say one thing - if they had chosen Tommi Soidinmäki in 2011, Finland might have had a chance to win. He’s the greatest voice in Finland today.

Treäsbetoni ois voinu pärjätä jollai muulla biisillä. Jos ne ois tehny "taivas lyö tulta" just noihi aikoihi nii siitä ois moni tykänny. Mut suomen parhaat menneisyydessä on Kirkan Hengaillaan ja Lordi. Sit kans ny lähitulevaisuudessa on Blind channel ollu tosi hyvä ja kylhä tää on selvää esistystä kolmena vuotena putkee tulee iha semi hyvä biisi jolla voi pärjätä viisuissa💪
Finland is so underrated in eurovision
First these songs were not so bad, some were actually and few became hits in Finland, second I hate our Sorry-that-we-exist-because-don´t-succeed-abroad mentality. Jumalauta ihmiset nyt pois se ruiskutus siitä ainaisesta huonoudesta!

That's why it was possible send also Swedish songs. Sorry, that we didn't use that possibility back in those days that each country should sing in their official languages.

1992 jamma jamma jamma jamma jammaajaa! That's really ugly song! Fantasiaa was only few underrated back in 1983, kind of modern at that time, but Europe wasn't ready to vote other than traditional 'Ein bischen Frieden' songs. :)

2000 still hurts me. Nightwish was second in the Finnish qualifiers because of jury votes. Probably our best chance to win before Lordi, but instead we got Nina. What a wasted opportunity.

Like others I prefer countries to sing in their own language. But it doesn't score. Contrdictory rule thinking that you sing in your own language and then low points for not understanding it or finding it gutteral. Finland, Norway and Iceland the worst victims over the years. In general Finland give it all they've got. I tip my hat to you Finland, top efforts.68, 69, 71, 79 and 82 my favourites among many others.

What language was Edea "Aava" 1998?
So it took us 44 years to get out of pop tunes, apparently. Aside from a few exceptions only 2005 onwards did our range begin to vary more drastically. After Lordi's victory, we've been trying to send pretty much whatever into the contest, trying out what works. I suppose I'd like to see a classic rock or reggae song sent, since I find those genres strong here these days. I've got nothing against 'new music' getting sent, but I don't wanna see generic songs like Marry Me and Sing It Away sent to the contest, which blend too much with what comes out of a radio. (Aka, they're uninteresting)
Also, I can't help but feel that we ramped up the standard for the contest stage in 2007. Although screens and effects were present previously, I like to believe we took it to a whole new level, with how we used animation and higher details for background effect as a more consistent whole.
