This is because John was a marine. Justice league the animated series definitely helped catapult his version of green lantern to stardom but I would say he is one of the least imaginative of the earth lanterns.

Before I really got into comics, I remember being PISSED as a kid that Ryan Reynolds was Green Lantern in the movie. I grew up with the Justice League cartoon and always knew Green Lantern as John Stewart. It was only after the movie came out that I started getting into comics and realized that Hal is supposed to be the main Green Lantern. Supposed to be, because for me it’ll always be Stewart
I consider John Stewart/Green Latern and Mari/Vixen are both my favorite couple from the DC Animated Universe in "Justice League Unlimited" including the best superhero black couple as well.
Can we also just take a moment to relish the fact that all of these characters have had a solid expanded media appearance outside of the comics (like games, movies, tv)? I mean there are still a lot of comic characters deserving of this like Grant Morrison's Frankenstein IMO, but practically every major black DC character has had a solid adaptation in some way; that's just beautiful to me.
Makes me jealous as a Hispanic/Latino, yet hopeful as a fellow minority. I want to be able to not count the number of notable Hispanic/Latin comic book characters on my two hands. I don't just want representation, I want diversity done right.

Also one of the green lanterns (Jessica Cruz) was in a DC animation cartoon as well. (Justice League vs The Five I believe.)

Apparently Val-Zod is getting a mini-series produced by Michael B Jordan in the coming years. Still unclear if he’s also starring in it. So hopefully that will bring Val-Zod some more love.
Black Lightning, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Cyborg, Bumblebee and Vixen are my personal favourite black DC heroes. If black DC villains were added to this list, Black Manta would be one of 'em.
Mr terrific was done so dirty in Arrow so they can make Oliver look good. If they did him right he would outclass Oliver in every way except for archery.
Peacemaker is DCEU 1st series connected to the movies just like MCU got a bunch. Static and Vixen should have their own. Static should do all the things he did in his animation along with Black Lightning and Lightning skills, but keep it purple like in the animation instead of the usual electric blue or yellow. I prefer his 1st white outfit too. Vixen, should like all in JLU, Arrow and LoT. However, add more things like dino powers and mystical. In a comic related to JLU, she finds that she can use a dragon's fire breath. And her outfit should b like the comics and JLU instead of Arrow's and LoT.

Check out his stories in the original Icon series in the 90s and his current stories in Icon and Rocket: Season One. There's a great implication in the latter on what happened to Superman.
I liked David Zavimbe better than Luke Fox. Luke Fox was just another rich kid while David was a child soldier who was raised by a warlord. David's main villain was his own brother. I was really upset when the switch was made.

I don't know if I would count Static/Icon, they're part of Milestone which is an imprint licensed under agreement to DC Comics - which is to say we've seen the Milestone characters mixed with DC characters in a lot of media, but there was also a time where Milestone wasn't happy with their treatment under DC and the characters couldn't be used.
DC had an issue where God made Icon and Superman fight to decide which earth to destroy. While they were fighting, he decided to combine the two universes. So, the Milestone comics are now part of the main continuity.
Can we get a live action version of Young Justice already? It would be so much better than the movies we currently have if they stuck to the source material or based it on the show from a few years back.

People all too often forget Mal Duncan, an athletic but otherwise unpowered friend to several of the original Teen Titans. In Teen Titans #44 (Nov. 1976), an unknown and unexpected foe invades the Titans' HQ. Trapped and in need of a weapon, Mal finds the costume and equipment (including an advanced exoskeleton) of the Silver Age hero Guardian. Mal helps to rout the invader, becoming a sort of auxiliary member of the Titans. While neither the original Guardian nor the first Black hero to lead a comic, Mal Duncan deserves to be remembered.
I just wish DC would actually bring in more of the Milestone characters (Especially Hardware), instead of race swapping already established characters.

You're kidding right? For as long as DC has existed they didn't have black characters until Marvel did it with Falcon, Power Man, Black Panther, Blade and Storm. Even Spike Lee has said screw DC they suck, Marvel is the way to go.

My entire childhood i only knew about jon stewart as the green lantern. I didn't know that there was a white green lantern until i saw ryan reynolds green lantern much later.
Hal Jordan was the first GL then John Stewart after him

People all too often forget Mal Duncan, an athletic but otherwise unpowered friend to several of the original Teen Titans. In Teen Titans #44 (Nov. 1976), an unknown and unexpected foe invades the Titans' HQ. Trapped and in need of a weapon, Mal finds the costume and equipment (including an advanced exoskeleton) of the Silver Age hero Guardian. Mal helps to rout the invader, becoming a sort of auxiliary member of the Titans. While neither the original Guardian nor the first Black hero to lead a comic, Mal Duncan deserves to be remembered.
I just wish DC would actually bring in more of the Milestone characters (Especially Hardware), instead of race swapping already established characters.
One wonders if there's no live action Bumblebee series/movie because she's essentially DC's answer to (read: A Rip-Off Of) Wasp.
