  • Hey everyone, My name is Carson Sleep and I am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota where my family settled and started ranching in 1883. I started this channel to show how a working ranch operates and to document our everyday activities. My goal is to have fun and to bridge part of the ever growing gap between American Beef producers and consumers.
Join me as I learn more about raising cattle, caring for the land and working/operating equipment!

That first lot of cows the last set look like she was close to calving. I my be wrong it had been years when I have been around them.
That last runner my dad use to have a stick about as thick as a baseball bat. He use to throw it at the cow like you did. But he was able to turn, stop, and back them up. By throwing it at different points on the body. We had no modern or horses to chase them it was all on foot. I even got pretty good at it. And also I had a dog attack a calf and I threw that stick and it that dog square and dropped it right there. I called the cops and the charged the dog owner for mangling the calf and letting his dog run at large. Anyway love your videos especially when you use the horses. Great job

@@sleepranch lol you could . My dad and I use to be pretty far from a cow and send her moving from any direction. Also i was taught never go any where with out something in my hand when in and around bulls. A stick or a bull wipe. We had many and one that you had to watch. He put the run on my cousin and I smacked in hard on the end of nose. He drop to is knees. The next time he kept is eye on me. And another place is hit them on the end of the horns the will also drop. Lots of experiences in my younger days. Miss it dearly.

There’s always that one that doesn’t want to go with the plan! We were loading steers for Detroit Stockyards one Monday morning and had an Angus steer that was hard getting in the chute! Got him in the chute and he decided to turn around half way up! Mean as hell! Ran Abe over damn near got me as well! After an hour we finally wore him out and got it loaded! Hiya,
Nice video; thank you. When you were a boy, did you daydream about riding in the big cattle drives in school? You are so close to the reality that thinking of those drives must have been almost compulsory. John Wayne's drive with the boys must have fueled them? I'm still waiting to see someone lassoing a cow.
    Stay safe, Steve...

A family friend ranches in South Central Idaho. They are strictly Herefords. They keep about 30 bulls. My friend insists that every bull be halter broke and have a pleasant disposition. Any bad manners get them traded. Or worse. He is somewhat more lenient with the cows, but aggressive meanness gets culled out.
