  • With the war in Ukraine now beyond the 100-day mark, some Western capitals are pressing harder for peace talks to bring the fighting to an end. In Europe, unity over Ukraine has passed its peak with divergence over the supply of weapons. What will it take to bring the fighting to an end? What are the pathways to peace? DW speaks to Wolfgang Ischinger, one of Germany’s most seasoned diplomats.

The only one and logical solution to end war- Russia must pull out of Ukraine. It's not humiliating, it's the right way to show to the world that Russia still have something human. Don't even expect Ukraine to come to peace in someone's else terms, after such a tremendous losses of human lives and destruction of the whole country.

The Ukrainians and the Russians seem very clear on this point. But clamouring for peace talks and first place as an "honest broker" to chair them gives the contenders for this role a lame excuse for doing next to nothing of real value to bring us more quickly to that point.
Only then is one side or the other likely to want to "salvage" anything from talks. Even then, if I were Ukrainian, I'm not sure I'd bother wasting my breath. All the guarantees given by foreigners to date (particularly, but not confined to, Russia) have been ignored or conveniently forgotten. For them it seems (and probably is true) that the only guarantees worth their salt are those that come from hard won victories and immense sacrifice on the ground.

What a cop-out on Germany’s failure and duplicity in providing weapons. He just says, waaaal, Germany alone wouldn’t have made the difference anyway. But EVERY country could say that. It required a group effort, and Germany failed. Moreover, even if the actual amount of German weapons might not be essential, it could have provided crucial leadership to bring others along. It only seems to lead when it is time to crush Greece or violate the Dublin Regulation.

Not without the agreement of all its NATO allies (which would be obligated to defend it from any backlash). Germany has prided itself on its "constructive" good relations with Russia. But everybody is aware of the deep and well-deserved hatred the Russians have historically from the memory of being attacked and invaded by Germany. The "Great Patriotic War" lives large in the national psyche.
If ever there would be a more counter-productive move than this, I'm not sure I could imagine it. Vladimir Putin would probably be delighted, though. Declaring open war (to popular demand) would likey be a no-brainer.
I'm sure that this, in part, lies behind Germany's slow support for Ukraine. It's not just the post-war culture of pacifism. It's possibly (justifiable) fear of the memories that German military involvement stirs up in Russia. And awareness that this may possibly be a major reason for escalation.

Because lack of infantry has certainly been his Achilles heal and one of the main reasons that this war has been so expensive in terms of men and materiel for Russia. As has trying to maintain that this is a limited special military operation. Both are handicapping the Russians badly at this point.
Strange also, that that you're picking on Germany, when Germany is demonstrably one of the very least enthusiastic in Europe - putting aside Hungary and Serbia - about this supplying Ukraine in this conflict, knows that it is going to pay the highest economic price (Ukraine and Russia aside) because of it and is currently starting to feel the effects.

This video is not only educational in setting out the wider implications of the future of Europe vs Russia, it brings home the fact that Russia is the "school bully" of the wider region. This is why NATO is a necessary arrangement to provide a credible opponent. I take some comfort from the increasing trend of civilized nations to distance themselves from Russia in economic and trade terms, thus isolating the rogue nation and hampering its ability to make relative progress in tomorrow's world. Will this lead to change from within? I doubt it as it seems ingrained in the Russian psyche that brute force is the only way to achieve their objectives; they have a long and painful history proving this. The whole of the free world should unite and support Ukraine until they have defeated the Russians and forced them off their land.

5:10 minor powers, they are a minor part of the equation :)
17:30 Aaaa, so this is why they are already annexing the southern part of Ukraine, they want to be able to say those parts are already Russia so if Ukraine were to attack Kherson or Mariupol, they would be attacking Russia, so here come the nukes x)

The odd part is all during the cold war there was a big fear of the Soviet tanks rolling across western Europe....now we learn Russia can not fight more than 100km beyond its borders and NATO refuses to fight beyond its borders.

Nope, not in the long run. 5 years after the war the cleanup will be done, 5 years after that there will be an economic boom, 20 years after that Russia will collapse. ... Ok, the last one is a dream, but the rest will happen.
