- Опубліковано 8 чер 2022
- With the war in Ukraine now beyond the 100-day mark, some Western capitals are pressing harder for peace talks to bring the fighting to an end. In Europe, unity over Ukraine has passed its peak with divergence over the supply of weapons. What will it take to bring the fighting to an end? What are the pathways to peace? DW speaks to Wolfgang Ischinger, one of Germany’s most seasoned diplomats.

The only one and logical solution to end war- Russia must pull out of Ukraine. It's not humiliating, it's the right way to show to the world that Russia still have something human. Don't even expect Ukraine to come to peace in someone's else terms, after such a tremendous losses of human lives and destruction of the whole country.
Wishful thinking
For 8 years Putin pushed for peace talks because people were dying in Ukraine. Nobody cared. Imagine Scotland one day vote for independence and the UK government starts shelling and killing scottish people.
@Robert Jameson "he just lost" - war not ended yet
@Robert Jameson the war is far from over. And putin totally loosing it, require continuing and increasing support from West to Ukraine. Pluss Russia continuing committing grave errors as a default setting. Both are not given things.
The problem is once the west populations support falls Ukraine is finished
After unprovoked, brutal attack on sovereign country, let's give the aggressor part of what he wanted to steal. That'll teach him and prevent it from happening again.
we Russian gonna absorb Ukraine
What provoked American to attack vietname miles away or Iraq or NATO in lybya .. honestly Russia has better justifications
Another 100 day dude. Try looking at the last 15 years.
@@hamish1309 NATO is the winner what ever happens. Russians are dying in their thousands, hundreds of tanks and aircraft being destroyed. The Russian economy on its knees and NATO has not lost a single soldier. Have you heard the term Pyric Victory?
@@mburugithinji9488 you mean desnazify Ukraine and defend the motherland, Russia from imminent danger from Ukraine?
Wolfgang, you are dreaming, there are no Peace talks happening anytime soon, if ever. That opportunity was lost a long time ago. There's nothing but fighting until a winner is declared.
The Ukrainians and the Russians seem very clear on this point. But clamouring for peace talks and first place as an "honest broker" to chair them gives the contenders for this role a lame excuse for doing next to nothing of real value to bring us more quickly to that point.
Only then is one side or the other likely to want to "salvage" anything from talks. Even then, if I were Ukrainian, I'm not sure I'd bother wasting my breath. All the guarantees given by foreigners to date (particularly, but not confined to, Russia) have been ignored or conveniently forgotten. For them it seems (and probably is true) that the only guarantees worth their salt are those that come from hard won victories and immense sacrifice on the ground.
@@appstratum9747 Well said
I think ultimately he said that. It was the reporter who was suggesting peace talks would go anywhere.
there are no "winners" in war. only survivors.
Unfortunately a reality.
Germany should step up not only in words but in actions. They promise but they don’t deliver.
It is all warm air and no action
Maybe Germany should tell us what side they are on.
You're right! They should join the fight instead of telling the Ukrainians what to do!!!
Germanys failure to step up to help Ukraine with heavy weapons "is a relatively minor issue" according to this ex diplomat. No wonder that the Ukrainian leadership holds Germany in such contempt, as indeed do many around the world. Germany has lost a lot of respect world wide for its assistance to Putin, both before and during this war
Germany does not owe Ukraine anything
Barry , please send me a new 3080ti graphic, or preferably two, and a fast memory. i want to have more than my neighbor's. if you don't send it, i will contempt you.🤣🤣🤣
I have already put buying any more German machinery on my banned list. What a disgrace.
Absolutely right on. Germany needs to step up its support for Ukraine or we should give Putin Germany if he gets out of Ukraine!
@make a wish You must have bought that comment on Wish. North Korea needs you.
Peace talks must not be conditional on giving away Ukraine territory as prompted by the incoherent Macron and Scholz.
I think if your being realistic you would recognize that Ukraine is on the verge of total defeat and any peace talks would take that into account. Some territory is bound to change hands.
Putin didn't say that at all, he demanded 3 things, conquering Ukraine wasn't one of them
Yup, these so called experts lie and deceive shamelessly.
He said they were a non country and definitely wanted to overthrow the government
But his actions speak differently.
Totally agree.
A lot of Neville Chamberlain's in France and Germany.
What a cop-out on Germany’s failure and duplicity in providing weapons. He just says, waaaal, Germany alone wouldn’t have made the difference anyway. But EVERY country could say that. It required a group effort, and Germany failed. Moreover, even if the actual amount of German weapons might not be essential, it could have provided crucial leadership to bring others along. It only seems to lead when it is time to crush Greece or violate the Dublin Regulation.
Germany have ALWAYS somehow been in bed with Russia.
Germany had a fantastic chance to 110% redeem them from the past, but they failed
Germany's cop out was not leaning on the kiev comedian prior to the war to stay neutral and no NATO..know the west fighting a proxy war they csnt win
Exactly right!

Germany isn't the arsenal of democracy.
The West was never attacked by anyone.
It is Ukraine, that is the one that must relearn the idea of deterrence.

Ukraine is very much the exact opposite of all values the EU and NATO stand for.
Germany has let the democratic west down and should be leading not making excuses!
Germany is scared of Russia
Was hoping Germany was going to step up and be on the right side of history here. Am disappointed in their support towards Ukraine. The countries actually stepping up and also fast tracking the support is the reason why the Ukrainians are still holding the line. If this conflict turns, the lack of support will be on Germany to answer for. Need more pressure to make the right choice here. Am disappointed and honestly thought their support would make a big difference. Obviously not 🤔

How come that Germany has such a wise diplomat and that in the same timw Germany made such terrible mistakes in its policy towards Russia in the last 20 years or even more and still hesitating...
Look at the Germany's current leader! He leaves a lot to be desired. Germany would be better off without him. His hesitancy on assisting Ukraine is deplorable. It speaks volumes about his loyalties!!
Well Lavrov and Putin where given the benefit of the doubt. Germany are vey angry the work of the last 20 Years was a sham on the part of Russia. Germany were played, and feel ashamed.
The Allies handing over East Germany to Communist barbarians was a mistake that keeps hounding the West today.
Who is wise this old man talking rubbish
How can war end with such advice and sentiments coming from highly respected figures in the Western world?
God bless you.
4:00 sure. Germany alone isn't a "decisive factor" but all help adds up to build a set of coherent brigades. Ukraine really badly needs air defense at front lines and Gepards would make a difference (as in, save hundreds of lives if not thousands). And where are the promised Gepards???
Precisely!
He’s foolish and sidestepping the question. The point is exactly what he said is a problem and Germany SHOULD be a major provider.
@@khorshed1227 nobody will win here
I'm sorry, but these Gepards are outdated. I wouldn't say they are junk, but they were already mothballed in Germany because they can't serve their purpose on a modern battlefield.
At least for air defense they are almost entirely useless. At best it can take out low flying helicopters, but stinger missiles already do that better.
@@a5cent
Stingers expose humans with zero armor and Gepards have radars that detect and automatically follow the target. At least this is what I see.
And lastly, you are speaking as if ruSSian army has some "advanced" air force. No they don't... Their air force is all an average 4th generation aviation.
In any case, Ukraine is asking for them and if they are mothballed then it's even more puzzling why not just help out Ukraine if it's "junk" for German
Ukraine need a great deal more long/medium range weapons, to really force Putin to re-evaluate his position. A handful of howitzers and a few missile batteries will just help this drag on for many months yet. The Ukrainians need the weapons to make a decisive move. IMO.
Because they are white ..why do you bkeep quiet as civilians are bombed by america ...
Wont be coming from Germany according to this double talking weak ex diplomat
The war dragging on for months and maybe even years is perhaps something the U.S. prefers -- thus bleeding Russia dry as it cost around a billion dollars a day for them to wage war on Ukraine.
I don't think you really need peace in ukraine
But that's exactly what is expected of the Ukrainians - drag it on, "weaken Russia"
He seems like a pleasant guy, also enjoyed the interview, interesting conversation
I think he just rehashed the wishful thinking of the west. They say Russia is gonna lose and Russia failed to take ukraine, but Russia said it's objectives were to "demilitarize and denazify" ukraine. If those are the goals of Russia, they seem to be doing very well at that. They destroyed all ukraine military bases and killed thousands of Ukraine army and western mercenaries in ukraine. So, to wish that is not true, does not make it to be untrue. I think the west need to come back to reality
The problem with truth in that war - it isn't pleasant. Without pleasant "experts" all you will see is cancer and metastases.

I think the host could have been more assertive and question the gentleman why is continental Europe meager material help to Ukraine is not relevant. He says that war will when both Russia and Ukraine decide that there is nothing to gain from more war but in order for Ukraine to do that the continental European countries need to send more military aid and civilian material assistance to Ukraine, they need to cooperate more with the UK and the US.
Absolutely spot on! There are those in Europe who, naively don't see Russia as a future risk. It is,and, needs to be brought to it's knees, and, beg for forgiveness for it's actions in Ukraine. Could Ukraine consider swapping Mariupol for Königsberg?
This would improve EU security and allow another sea port for Ukraine exports, without Russian interference.
Maybe Germany/Poland could restore their joint ownership of their territory, then rent it to Ukraine.
Koenigsberg doesn't exist for more than half a century. It was offered to Baltic states during soviet times but they flat of refused. Reason : Russian majority.
Now both Kalllingard and Mariupol are Russians, so might as well Ukraine trade Karkiv for Odessa.
Why is Germany hesitant to send arms?
Pretty simple: their entire economy is beholden to energy supplies from Russia and you can be assured that Russia has reminded them of that fact.
Better yet, why Germany is hesitant to send its troops?
@@NTraveller Even if it wanted to (which it certainly does not) I'm not sure if it could. Not without the agreement of all its NATO allies (which would be obligated to defend it from any backlash). Germany has prided itself on its "constructive" good relations with Russia. But everybody is aware of the deep and well-deserved hatred the Russians have historically from the memory of being attacked and invaded by Germany. The "Great Patriotic War" lives large in the national psyche.
If ever there would be a more counter-productive move than this, I'm not sure I could imagine it. Vladimir Putin would probably be delighted, though. Declaring open war (to popular demand) would likey be a no-brainer.
I'm sure that this, in part, lies behind Germany's slow support for Ukraine. It's not just the post-war culture of pacifism. It's possibly (justifiable) fear of the memories that German military involvement stirs up in Russia. And awareness that this may possibly be a major reason for escalation.
@@appstratum9747 I wouldn't be so sure that "Putin will be glad", but they expanded NATO and promised Ukraine the accession to the NATO, they are sending weapons, they opened an economic war, they discourage the Ukraine to negotiate. It's only fair that they also dedicate their soldiers to the war, let Germans die for the "world democracy" and other colourful words one can choose. Instead they are hiding behind the backs of the Ukrainians
It's a conflict of their own making. Accept responsibility for your actions and reap what you sow
@@NTraveller Germany sending troops fleshes out quite nicely Putins entire justification for his war: "Denazification" with all the emotional baggage Germany brings. Ergo...a great excuse to formally declare war to the Russian public and replenish (via general mobilisation) his infantry in Ukraine. Because lack of infantry has certainly been his Achilles heal and one of the main reasons that this war has been so expensive in terms of men and materiel for Russia. As has trying to maintain that this is a limited special military operation. Both are handicapping the Russians badly at this point.
Strange also, that that you're picking on Germany, when Germany is demonstrably one of the very least enthusiastic in Europe - putting aside Hungary and Serbia - about this supplying Ukraine in this conflict, knows that it is going to pay the highest economic price (Ukraine and Russia aside) because of it and is currently starting to feel the effects.
Why should they let the aggressors, get away with their egregious conduct.
They should be taught a lesson, and justice must be taken against their pathetic practices in killing innocent folks.
How do you negotiate with someone that knows no honer, and breaks every treaty it makes. The only way to deal with someone like that is to stop them unconditionally, and make it impossible for them to act aggressively against you.
So Germany now is going to teach the rest of us about “deterrence?” I’ll tell my Uncle James who they sent to heaven 75 years ago and see what he thinks.

Irrelevant, many things have changed between then (1947) and now (2022). In the present day what happened last week is barely relevant to this week, never mind something 3 generations past. The irony of Ironies. A German broadcaster commenting on deterrents??....
This video is not only educational in setting out the wider implications of the future of Europe vs Russia, it brings home the fact that Russia is the "school bully" of the wider region. This is why NATO is a necessary arrangement to provide a credible opponent. I take some comfort from the increasing trend of civilized nations to distance themselves from Russia in economic and trade terms, thus isolating the rogue nation and hampering its ability to make relative progress in tomorrow's world. Will this lead to change from within? I doubt it as it seems ingrained in the Russian psyche that brute force is the only way to achieve their objectives; they have a long and painful history proving this. The whole of the free world should unite and support Ukraine until they have defeated the Russians and forced them off their land.
Eastern Europeans been telling this for decades.. no one believed them.
Is it worth WW3❓
Not all Russian leaders were bad..
this one is older than he looks.. don't sacrifice innocents..humour the bully
@@annychest718 Name one good Russian leader?
4:40 Germany - minor, ich verstehe. This won't hurt them at all x)
5:10 minor powers, they are a minor part of the equation :)
17:30 Aaaa, so this is why they are already annexing the southern part of Ukraine, they want to be able to say those parts are already Russia so if Ukraine were to attack Kherson or Mariupol, they would be attacking Russia, so here come the nukes x)
verstehe not verstand
@@wilhelmu Gaaaaaaaa, tnx xD
Wished Russian people could be helped to turn against Putin. Same with North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, etc
What about the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances -
The odd part is all during the cold war there was a big fear of the Soviet tanks rolling across western Europe....now we learn Russia can not fight more than 100km beyond its borders and NATO refuses to fight beyond its borders.
Very good interview.
SIR! ABSOLUTELY PERFECT INSIGHT! BRAVO!
Whenever I heard some scholars talking about Russia not achieving her military goals quickly enough,I never really heard them indicating that Russia is not really fighting the Ukrainian but the whole western world or NATO in general.
What are their goals?? What are they offering???
No matter what the outcome will be, Ukraine will still be the loser.
Nope, not in the long run. 5 years after the war the cleanup will be done, 5 years after that there will be an economic boom, 20 years after that Russia will collapse. ... Ok, the last one is a dream, but the rest will happen.
You haven't been paying attention Ukraine is getting destroyed. And Europe is still paying for it.
Give Ukraine heavy arms to defend their country. Please.
Extraordinary interview
This should have been good call for Africa country’s to start working for people instead robing them endangering is that my de half of world 🌎 is not able to provide food 🥘. This is what you have done self destroy your country’s people deserve more from this world politicians.
This whole dialogue and all its conclusions are that of the news maker. The ambassador disagrees. I can't see why any country should have to give up territory to aggressors with nuclear weapons.
Very interesting interview.
Good advice
Europe just keep supplying the weapons that’s what you designed now the payback is starting economically for Europe.
It's just the start
No matter what happens on battlefield Baltic states will never recognize Russian occupied Ukraine's teritories. In that regard Ukraine is winning already!
The rhetoric about Russia losing doesn't match the territorial gains they are making each day. I guess this paradox is the truth we have to have.
Germany France, Italy have always been called for peace.
