It was the rain and winds in the mountain that devastated that area of the country! 42 Trillion gallons of water there is nowhere on this planet that can take on that much water and come out unscathed. Hurricane Camille did the same on a smaller scale to the eastern mountains of Virginia in 1969. Hurricanes are heat engines they distribute the heat around the planet as destructive as they are imagine if they didn’t exist?
@Stonethegameroftherocks are you in the danger zone? I've never experienced anything close to this. I'm from Northern Ireland and it only rains here, it barely snows and I've never even seen a flood. I out myself in your shoes and my heart races and I'm not even there. I'm so sorry your all going through this and I hope it doesn't happen again.
@@TheRealMake-Make I just think there were much worse they didn't mention. I live south UK, I was sleeping thru the " Great Storm ", but half a mile up the road two firemen got killed by a falling tree. First I knew was a friend ringing my doorbell saying he couldn't get in to start apprenticeship. A lot of down trees, damage to houses, my mate had a boat in his garden from 800M away. Couple of mini tornados but seriously I dunno wtf it's on this list. Alas about ten people died I think. But nothing compared to a REAL hurricane 🌀 that forms over warm waters.
PS " Great Storm " 22 Dead, Hurricane Allen ,269 Dead, Category 5 at times with 190 mph winds 🤔😮!!. Just thought it would be worth a mention over " Great Storm" although although NOT a Hurricane it was a rare event for the UK. Sure we often get 60 mph winter storms but it's rare to see the world turned upside down 😮✌️.
The statement made “hurricanes can’t move far once they inland” isn’t true…. I live in the Asheville North Carolina and we were just hit by hurricane helene, destroyed our city. We’re 300+ miles from the nearest shoreline. I’ll never understand how the hurricane made it into the mountains
Well that wasn’t because of the wind it was because of the rainfall that cost all the flooding. Like I said though doesn’t matter what category the hurricane is at, the biggest threat of hurricanes is the water
There were hurricane force winds as far as Atlanta when it made landfall in Florida. The rest of the state had tropical force winds including the entire state of SC and western NC. I live in SC and the biggest strongest trees were down. It was horrible.
Helene dumped 42 Trillion gallons of water on these mountain communities in less than 24 hours that’s the equivalent to the amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls for a two year period. Hurricane carry massive amounts of rain, Harvey, Camille & Florence along with Helene are the most destructive ones in history! Water is a life giver and a life taker one of the dichotomies of this planet.
15:40 Maria hit Puerto Rico as a CAT4, not a CAT5. It *had* been a CAT5, but weakened before making landfall on the island. 17:51 The Dominican Republlic is not an island. It is a country that shares the island of Hispaniola with its neighbouring country Haiti.
@@ericar.7924 probably as that was bad. Your average person hasn't heard of Dominica But know the D Republic as it's a cheap holiday destination. Just avoid Ice on your drink the amount of people I know who went there and got sick is crazy . Think I stick to Barbados or St Lucia 👍✌️
I was 3 when the "great storm" hit the UK. I distinctly remember my Dad trying to tie stuff down outside, my mum hanging onto him, and I was hanging onto my mum out the back door. I have this vivid memory of them wearing those yellow raincoats the lighthouse men or fishermen would wear!
You said, “it brought winds of 130 k/h. That was the strength of a category 3 hurricane.” But that’s wrong. 130 k/h is only 80.78 m/h. A cat 3 hurricane has winds of 111-129 m/h.

The fact that they said “people chose not to leave” is wild to me for Hurricane Katrina. Most of New Orleans didn’t have the means to flee so the wording needs to change cause what is being said is victim blaming.
FACT , that was a BS list that missed several famous deadly Hurricanes , like Allen which went Cat five several times. I slept thru the UK storm while four fireman were killed half a mile away. @@brianchampaigne5490 True , 🤔 , Galveston hurricane killed 8,000 but as u say we would be here a year or 2 🤔. Yeah Florida seems to get hit land mass and low lying. Statement: Hurricanes can't travel far inland. They need warm water to survive.
