Thanks for producing the plans. Between them, the video and the build article, the process is very clear. I'm in the middle of the build right now. I didn't see a way to contact you on your website so I came here. Unless I'm missing something, I think I found an error in your plans. The Parts 1 page shows the spindle measures 2 1/2" where it goes into the clear cover. Parts 5 gives the diameter of the hole in the clear cover as 2 3/4" which is the same as the outer diameter of the spindle. I had to remake the plexiglas cover. Thanks again.
Why two handles? Is there an advantage to having two handles, instead of using only one handle attached to the center gear? Any particular reason for there being 19 teeth on the gears, as opposed to any other number of teeth? :
My only critique is I don’t see the need or purpose for two handles, just the gears connecting the two shafts. The handles seem to almost collide when turning, and risk rapping your knuckles or just getting in the way. One handle seems perfectly sufficient.
12:30 I think you’re the best. I see these projects more as learning lessons and appreciation of the history/common sense ingenuity that bore their development rather than building a power tool that has the same “power”, longevity, or ability that store bought tools have. In many countries, where our store bought furniture is being made, the craftsmen are working with power tools that don’t match the professionalism or quality being shown in these videos.
I have made gears before and you too had the same trouble I did. I found that if you use a drill bit the same diameter as the gear and basically do everything else the same with disk sander and clean up it is faster and more uniform. Really cool idea and now I need to make my own.
I saw the guy's vid who makes these with a bike chain and wondered how long til someone makes one with gears. I wouldn't have thought ply gears would be strong enough, awesome build. I was impressed with your wooden engineer's vice, this goes to another level.
I love your videos. Please don't get burned out on UA-cam, because I know how much work making these videos is. Can't wait to purchase the plans. Thanks. Leo
Although I understand you have many years in the construction and Building Trades, I always respect a man that has the mind of an engineer and can think up plans and execute them as smoothly as you do
That’s awesome John. My sister got me that Makita cordless router for Christmas and the little bit that I have used it so far I have loved it, that thing is awesome and it’s so nice not being tethered or tied down with a cord.
John, incredible build! I’m just a beginner wood worker and am always amazed at what you can build with wood. Your videos have inspired me to try new things. Coming from a family of woodworkers I never really started working with wood until recently. I’m the mechanical one of the family! Now that I’m in my mid 50s, I am starting to appreciate wood working more and more and because of your videos I look forward to building all kinds of things. I have definitely made my mistakes and what a great way to learn. Knowing that the best wood workers even make mistakes gives me a lot more confidence and I keep going. Thanks for all the videos and I look forward to seeing more. THANKS!
Let’s build a wooden vise. But before we start we are going to build a home made table saw/ band saw/ jointer/ belt sander,,, shall we begin? This guys level of engineering and problem solving is beyond amazing!
Really nice work John. Thanks. A note on acrylic, it's generally not a good idea to use countersunk screws as the plastic is prone to crazing and cracking. The stresses under a countersunk screw head will do this if overtightened. Another approach, if you want the screw heads flush to the surface, is to counterbore and use pan head or button head hardware. Again, very nice!
Greetings from Russia. Loved your gear vise. I was making a vise with a wood screw. Now I want to make a fully wood vise with a gear. Thanks for the video.
I really like this idea! I just bought the plans, and I'm thinking I may scale this up and rotate it 90 degrees to see if this works well as a way to keep a leg vise parallel. Thank you so much for sharing!
Possibly my favorite build of yours ever. Something about watching the gears go round and the other handle moving by itself. Great way to start 2019. Thank you for the video.
Even though I don’t do woodworking, or have a shop, these videos are very fascinating and learn a lot! gives me some excellent ideas for when I do get a shop. Keep it up john👍
Exceptional work John, a simple, elegant solution to a vexing problem. Thank you for sharing your great thinking and hard work, brilliant, thanks again
That is very cool! I have always wanted a twin screw vice for my bench so now I know how to make one without having to pay the $$'s for a commercial one. One more project added to the To do List.
John, another outstanding project. The level of detail is first class, very professional and easy to follow! I am continually amazed by your level of craftsmanship. I guess this provides me something to shoot for in my work. Thanks again for your work and great videos!
To sort of quote Jack Nicholson in "As Good As it Gets" - " You make me want to be a better Woodworker"....... Brilliant design John.... I made another pair of your compact compass this morning...I give them away to fellow woodworkers
Great project! and I believe drilling the holes after making it round was the correct way to go, I believe having a hole in the end of the piece when you try to mount it on the lathe would have been far more problematic than drilling holes in a round piece of wood. Keep up the great work, I love to watch your stuff!
The adjustable vise was fantastic! But this one is AWESOME!! Still watching for something more "fast to assembly" for my workshop! Good job, like always!
Very "steampunk", looks very attractive. When I do something with gears or other large moving parts, I always put a little diameter spacer between those and the support, so the friction is minimized, but I suppose you don't need that. Thanks for sharing !
Love this build, John. Made to fill your day or two ... But definitely designed to give one a feeling of accomplishment for sure. Wracking happens even in the best and this one will definitely contend with the best for least wrack.
@@Crewsy hey you know sometimes you have to stop because your body tells your to, or do you work your body till its so fucked up that you need some kind of surgery? Also I think it was his hands and not his elbow, common problem with woodworkers.
I just found the vice that I will build for my new workbench in a few weeks! Perfect timing, John! Thank you! Pretty damn clever! Not that I'm surprised one bit though! Thanks for sharing! Happy Sunday!
Freaking awesome build sir. I'm a guitar builder but love to watch other wood workers and the great ideas they come up with. This is definitely one of my favorite channels and I'll be ordering those plans for sure it just so happens the end vice on one of my benches went out of whack (thanks to someone constantly over tightening odd shaped pieces on the work end) so this will be a cool edition to my shop. I'm going to get a little crazy with it and use exotic wood veneers of the gears and instal LED's in them so I can have a light show every time I plane down a neck blank.
If you happen to do a follow up video or maybe just a thought for another video, could you discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your quick release, single screw vise and this new (well-made!) twin screw. Thumbs up as always John!

This is incredible. I'd like to make one, but worry about the strength of the gears. How hard would it be to break?

Probably the best bench vice design I've seen. Smart. Well done.

Twin Turbo Gear Vise
Not bad but i like izzy swans quick vise the best
Nice, I like the transparent plexi that allows you to see the gears in action!
yeah it's very cool. i think the only way to make it better is custom colored lexan.

Yeah, a woodworker with a high verbal I.Q. Who woulda guessed?
John looks great nice seeing the gear in action with the clear front
This is the first time I’ve seen this guy and I love how all his machines are homemade. That’s freaking. AmaZing. LMG MOUNTED AND LOADED

I have been think of how vise moving instantaneously and consistently, but you have done it. Bravo 👍👍👍
I could watch the gears move all day long. Love the design and implementation.
I have been watching your progress on Instagram and was very excited to see the video. Great video and vice! Thanks for sharing John!

I love this, I'm an Engineer with a carpentry as my hobby !! :-) This really appeals!!
John,
How fun!
Who says shop furniture and equipment can't have style? Digging the uniqueness of the exposed gears!
WOW, she is stunning, I love that the gears are on show. I have seen a metal version of this but it is so much nicer in wood. Thanks for sharing

That was excellent! I love it went people build their own tools!
This may be the single coolest thing you've ever made.

This. Is. Phenomenal!!!
When I saw that you handmade the gears I was sold. Awesome!
If those were timing gears in an automotive engine, especially an overhead cam engine, they would be called idler gears. Nice setup John.
Pretty sure they're referred to as idler gears regardless of their industrial utilisation.
@@croyce7699, Yes.

Good Morning John. It was wonderful, very creative. Congratulations!!!
hey John, why don't you mount one handle in the central gear instead of two handles on the side gears ? Amazing project, keep up with the good work
