  • Hannah's getting a head start on spring this year, using cold frames to grow warm-weather crops such as tomatoes, chillies and eggplants.

In Tasmania, on Muwinina country, the growing season is quite short so gardeners do what they can to extend it.
Guest presenter Hannah Moloney has built a snug polycarbonate cold frame on her sloping block, tucked into a flat terrace and set against a stone retaining wall for extra heat. It has a hinged lid that she props open on hot days to stop plants overheating and to allow good airflow and reduce the risk of mildew and fungal problems. The lid keeps in the heat but also keeps out the rain, so you have to remember to water regularly with this system!
If you don’t have room for such a large frame, Hannah shows a small, temporary structure you can put together using bricks and an old window frame, just large enough to take two trays of seedlings and get them off to a good start.
    What you need:
20 bricks (approximately - depends on the size of your window frame)
    A second-hand window frame
    What to do:
Lay the window frame on a flat piece of ground and mark out the edges with chalk or some stones. Lay out the bricks within this framework, going up two bricks heights. Place your seedlings or pots within the brick frame and put the window on top!

I used to think South Gippsland Victoria was too cold to grow a veggie garden this time of year but after seeing Hannah's garden I think I have some more motivation haha good work!!

I live in Middleton, near Manchester in the north of England and we have to use cold frames a lot here - I have a home made one from wood with a perspex top on a hinge. I have family who live in Perth, WA so I know 'Gardening Australia' and I have been a fan for about 12 years; I also have most of the DVD's - and remember 'Peter Cundall' who has never lost his 'Mancunian' accent after all these years in Australia! I went to visit the veg garden in Hobart at the Royal Botanical Gardens in 2008.

Handy Tip.. if you have young kids make sure you locate glass frames where they won't be stood on! 👍🏻

Good idea. Before Hannah said that the framed glass was a window frame, I thought it was a large photo frame. Do you think that a large photo frame could be used instead of a window frame?
