Have you ever looked at an audio mixer with all their sliders, knobs and flashing lights and wondered where on earth to start?
Knowing how to use a mixer properly can make the difference between a well-recorded sound track and something which is distinctly substandard. Even if you're brand new at audio recording, using a mixer won't be hard and it will give your sound a professional touch. In some situations where your production requires many microphones or sound sources a mixer is absolutely essential such as recording 3 or 4 live speakers or filming people at a conference.
This 45 minute video will give you the knowledge you need to approach any mixer and the the skills you need to create a great mix with it!

- Powered vs. unpowered mixers and "phantom power"
- Using the master volume control and common other volume controls (headphones, alt mixes, etc.)

Good introduction video, I've setup audio from years,and, from another perspective, if I may offer one issue.....when you mentioned the main volume control, you said to start low and build up....if you refer to the manual, in the setup section, it says to set them to "u". This actually works really well and you then use the channel volume slides to control the levels. This way your not chasing yourself all over the desk. It's also important with any mic setup to spend at least 30 mins "setting the levels" to ensure the best possible output and to minimise how often your adjusting everything. One last note, not every mixer will have features you mentioned nor have outputs/inputs on the rear panel.
This was great. The one thing that is missing...It would have been perfect if you had actually plugged in a mic and let us see what you considered the optimum level.

In the music industry, the term powered is reserved for a mixer that has a power amplifier built in for directly driving speakers. The correct term needed to power microphones is "Phantom Power" which is entirely different than having a power amplifier for speakers. When looking for a mixer, do not search for powered mixers. look for unpowered mixers with phantom power.
I need to add on to my prior post as the video started indicating he was an experienced audio guy. My recommendation is READ THE MANUAL. The coverage of the Trim was sadly completely wrong. The channel strips like the main need the sound to be normalized. This is where the SOLO button is used. On Yamaha mixers and some others, it is called the CUE button. When turned on, this switches the Headphones/Control Room monitor to JUST the channel being monitored AND the VU meter no longer shows the main level but instead the level of the channel being SOLO. With the slider at Unity, the Trim is set for normal speech, singing, etc to be at UNITY at the meters. This provides enough gain for optimum sound with decent headroom and not too much gain raising the noise floor. Please read the manual if you want good performance from an audio mixer. More than one channel can be cued or solo'ed at the same time so vocals can be balanced for singers, and guitars can be blended, etc. When all SOLO or CUE is off, then the main is monitored again.

I think this video was targeted to an audience that doesn't use a mixer for sound reinforcement regularly but perhaps for, as the presenter says at the top of the presentation, for film makers or videographers who need to add clean recorded sound to their film and video footage. Some of the topics presented along the way were presented in a very easy to understand manner for that audience but to those who use sound reinforcement equipment it probably came off as wrong or that the presenter was misinformed, or maybe even misleading the audience. Especially in the areas of describing the channel strips from top to bottom and gain structure. Still I'd offer big kudos to this presenter for this video in general and I think he is well on his way to becoming a very formidable presenter.

Thanks for this great video! Just wanted to ask you something. I want to use an external analog compressor with my microphone. I am taking the signal from the insert so I can use only the preamp of the mackie board to feed the compressor and then from the compressor to the interphase, (to avoid distortion in the recording). Is there any meter for the input of the preamp "trim"? Or do you have to rely only on your ears?

Why did you edit out the “solo” button function?
i have a01202 vlz4 and I can't get external effects to work. I've hooked up a delay box like this: aux send 1 > delay input, stereo return 1 > delay output. Turned up the aux knobs on the different channels as well as the aux 1 master. What am I doing wrong...

Is the 1202 the same as the 1402
No. The 1202 has four XLR inputs and the 1402 has six. The 1202 has volume knobs with the 1402 shown here has sliding faders.
Essentially they are the same, only real difference is number of channels (and in turn size) and channel volume control

1202 and 1402 are same family of mixers, even the manual covers both flavours
Does anyone actually listen to this in geadphones? Or are all of you in tiny ohone speakers? How can some one talking for 45mins about sound mixers get the mix so bad? .. next..
I've found not issues with the audio, besides everyone has their own idea of how audio should sound....this mix might not be your cup of tea, but it might be to sound he was going for
