If there is one word to describe the art of American painter and musician Chris Mars, it’s twisted. Dark shadows, dystopian environments, hollow eyes, a cold colour palette, cadaverous figures, visions from an apocalyptic nightmare. Each painting is enough to freeze you on the spot and suck you in no matter how much you may want to look away.
To quote the artist himself “What I am trying to do, in a sense, is to draw people in and to wrestle with something that is maybe not so comfortable. And I think that is analogous to how we regard one another where there is a lack of understanding…my paintings can maybe start a dialogue in that direction - on why someone might feel uncomfortable when there’s no reason to feel uncomfortable.”
In today’s video, we’re going to not only be exploring the head-turning artwork of Chris Mars, but also his story and the meaning behind his work, that hopefully may shine a bit more light on this seemingly strange, horrific and unsettling collection of visions.

Thanks for covering Chris Mars he's one of my favorites and he tackles mental health issues in his work, fascinating....
Who do all youtubers tske these stupid sponsors.. i guess money is everything
Hi, I know I'm probably reaching, but was this done after my recommendation or did you receive many..?? In any case, thanks...
Please make a video on lowbrow art.
It's the look in the characters eyes that gets me. So real and alive, even as they are drooping and turned down by weariness.
Also, his way with color is so beautiful.
Chris Mars is undeniably talented. His works may be perceived as unconeventional, but his art works have deeper complexity to them that not many can easily decode or interpret.
If for unconventional you mean from a stylistic point of view I agree, if you're talking about the messages... i'd rather say that the correct word is trivial...
@@yoggothemadgod6196 yep, couldn't agree more. Very unique style, yet cluttered and repetitive works.
the ball trimmer almost took me out of it but thank you!! it’s cool to see you covering an artist from my original home ❤ i’ve always admired him and he’s one of the artists who inspired me to continue creating when i saw his work in minneapolis
Agreed the ad was a little jarring. Chris is my favorite living artist!
I tend to be drawn to darkly awesome & twisted art. Thanks so much for posting this today.💕💜🌍
To me, his art isn't disturbing at all, it's beautiful and soulful 🖤
Chris must be a very perceptive person to be able to paint such a wide, beautiful array of emotions and expressions. The 'monsters' all look so real, so colorful. I love the ones with big rosy cheeks :)
I discovered this artist because of the covers of "Grimscribe" and "The conspiracy against the human race" by outstanding Detroit writer Thomas Ligotti (published by Penguin) used some of his artworks which I find after reading wonderfully fitting. I encourage you all to read them, specially the later.
Pretty Neat video Mr. Dweller, neat as always!
Same. That's what intrigued me the most about him. When I heard his brother was a schizophrenic it made sense and made his art much more impact full.
I’m a huge Replacements fan, and not only is he one of my all time favorite drummers, but I’m a huge fan of his visual art too!
The Replacements also rock. Thanks for the new artist rec.
i;m not _super into_ art generally but this channel always surprises me. every episode is a fascinating trip into a completely unique world as seen/portrayed by uniquely talented individuals. i love it :D
And weedwackers😂
I love all the different emotions shown in these faces, so much to read in them that they need no description. Incredible talent. Great video, thanks for your work.
To keep it brief, i will say i love Chris's art and find it mind blowing...
Such interesting work. Thank you for sharing
I have to thank you for introducing me to a number of highly talented and very moving artists. But this one might be the most moving for me personally
So glad you are giving us your insightful and empathic take on Chris's stunningly dark artwork.I don't find his work grotesque or ugly, but achingly human in a really visceral way,he makes us confront our own demons as he confronts his and makes us question bad things in the world.he has the same sensibility as Otto Dix.I love the replacements too, that is how I discovered his artwork as he did covers for their music. He articulates visually things that can't be spoken of verbally in his very emotive art.(Matt)p.s his work really moves you if you see it in real life in the same way Francis Bacon does, hope you get a chance to see Chris's work in person one day
Thank you for seeing this, as I think it is key to understanding his work
the album Tim has been one of my favourites since i was a teen in the 80s.
good for him for exploring his creativity so thoroughly
Giger and Beksinski are my favorite so I’m not surprised at all that I love this
Great video, I've never heard of Chris Mars. Amazing how he gets all those little details in the skin and the eyes and such. Very talented.
Amazing work by this artist, I’m glad to learn of his paintings 🖤🥀
Lots of fine detail, stunning light shading, and good evil - that doesn't go into horror. I like it.
Great video! I saw some of his work displayed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art maybe 20 years ago and it still has an affect on me today. One of the pieces was animated and you could put on headphones to listen to hundreds of characters, all talking at once. Brilliant stuff.
A suggestion that I think might be interesting, doing a video about Norval Morrisseau. People considered him to be Picasso of the North. He has an interesting story and very great artwork. I do think there's not much Indigenous artist recognition out there. I suggest taking a look. I really love your videos, art means a lot to me, as well as others. Keep doing great work!
I'm actually curious about indigenous artwork. It's not recognized as much as it should be. As an Asian, I truly admire art from the indigenous people. It's very different compared to modern art, it's very spiritual. I hope Blind is able to check him out. I'm sure others would love to see!
I just discovered this thank you so much for this vid I am absolutely going to purchase the book. I am obsessed with dark creepy art like this its so important. Its the only art that actually makes me feel anything lol. One thing I have noticed is that most of the subjects are doing their own thing but then one will be looking right at you. The eyes are done very well, they really draw you in.
The only reason I listened to your ad is because your voice is soothing LMAO 🤞🏾💕
That intro you utilize is hauntingly serene.
I dig you, mate.
I was so so happy to see you talking about Chris Mars, Ive been a fan of his since my youth. Id love to hear you talk about Camille Rose Garcia sometime!
I'm so glad I discovered this channel thank you for all the work you put into you're videos I've found so much dark artwork and I'm always looking for new dark art and this is where I find some of the best artists In my opinion you do a grate job of displaying there art while sharing there stories
What a perfect subject for one of your videos!!
Moved in so many ways.. just wow. Your channel feels special, great work. Loving it.
His works, like Suzzan Blac and Yuko Tasushima you covered before, gave me this feeling of physical pain. Like you got pierced and squashed by such cruel and twisted sights they presented to you. Like you can absorb those pain in those paintings.
As always, it was a superb presentation. Thank you for your dedication to the understanding of art.
love his style of painting..thanks for posting
Been a fan of Chris' for awhile now. His stuff is just red hot brilliant.
Love your channel! This is the first time i've managed to catch a new release! Cheers from Columbus, Ohio!
I just wanted to add my input that I like videos like this where you talk about the artist's work in general more than when you break the video up into a few paintings which you analyze closely
wow wow wow wow!!! another great video highlighted by yet another AMAZING artist corner! I exclaim outloud when i see you've uploaded a new video!
Good stuff as always. THANK YOU!
I really needed to see this. I think I finally have an idea for my painting now
"With clippers that can snag my bag" had me absolutely dying and if I had the money your ad read would've got me.
Fabulous video again well done!!!! 300k here we come 🎉
This channel is great I really dig this guy's work and what he said behind it.
Chris is my favorite living artist and I'm the proud owner of many of his paintings. Thanks for doing a video on him!
I really quite enjoy the empathy on display in his works. Downtrodden, disturbed, and disturbing people stuck in a positive feedback loop of getting more downtrodden, disturbed, and disturbing. These are people who need a better world and the introduction of love and compassionate influences like Chris who are willing to look them in the eyes and ask them what's wrong.
I'd like to think that his cruel worlds filled with decay are worlds coated with a cruelty that is decaying away from being willing to confront it. Healing wounds look very gross compared to fresh wounds. With convalescence it's a very necessary step to accept and embrace ugliness because beauty is otherwise impossible. Ugly is beautiful.
love the kind of art that makes me Want to look away but can't...Thank you for the share
I dislike 99.78% of commercials, but I gotta say: Your copywriting and narration of the Manscape commercial is, well, not just ballsy, ahem, but brilliant.
I CRAVE ART and YOU'RE MY DEALER.. YOU NEVER DISAPPOINT. Thank You!
bravo dude.
presentation has increased tremendously over the course of just One video!
Such impeccable skill with which each painting is rendered
I love the Replacements!
That intro is why I love surreal concept dark, gloomy art depicting such.
Who are the monsters? Indeed. Another fascinating, brilliant video.
I liked the paintings but did not know who made it now I know
Keep making these videos on Artists
brilliant. ingenious.
Love this one
It's nice to see you sponsored (manscaped is funny and always seem like someone is making a joke), and nice to see you, of course! It's strange that I've never heard of Chris Mars but his paintings look like something I've already seen before.
LOVE THE MATS! I'm happy that Chris has found success in his real passion.
Perfect commercial for you! Thanks for the fine education you offer.
i am so glad, you did one of my all time favorite, Chris mars ,!
His works remind me of the movie freaks by Todd Browning. Absolutely brilliant 👍
Nice work Sam, that ocean picture is extremely captivating 🥹
Love this art! 👍
What an amazing artist!👍🏼
superb technical skills with great imagination....like Beksinski.
I love The Replacements, played drums in a band and create my own art. So, thanks for covering Chris Mars and his art
this one really stood out for me
Hey! Mr. Dweller! Please do review the works of José Hernández (5 January 1944 - 20 November 2013) Moroccan born Spanish Painter and Plastic Artist. I'm sure you'll find it pretty interesting. Much respect to you, my sincere admirations and salutations!
This art is beautiful
His work reminds me of David B's graphic novel Epileptic. It's a very compelling work.
His clear affinity for the marginalized and empathy for the neglected tracks with the fact that he and his wife operate a canine rescue - Mutt Mutt Engine. He released a new album (downloadable on his website) where the proceeds go to help their mission.
Our talented MN hometown boy!
Oh wow, I was thinking "was it that Chris Mars" and couldn't believe it was!
The ad made my day
ART !!!!!!!!!!
Big fan of the art of Chris Mars!
i really connect with this artists work as someone born with autism, ive always felt different and an outsider. Even to the point of people judge you before you even open your mouth and struggling to get the right meaning to what I’m saying. thanks Blind Dweller 🙌
I love learning of amazing artist that I've been missing out on!! Have you seen the works of Dolce Paganne?
So good! Way to go! Both of you.
The way out is the way in. N. Peart
Listen closely to things faraway. Jtf
Thanks man.
Just want to say I am really enjoying your Chanel.every night I watch a new episode.makes me want to buy some paint and canvases and begin an artwork.Melissa from Australia upcoming artist.
Saw the thumbnail of this vid, thought the style of the art piece looked vastly similar to the cover of my copy of Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and sure enough, same artist!
Great video!
Though not very dark a video suggestion could be Otto Frello
Beksiński meeting Giger... Nice!
amazing
As a massive Replacements fan, with only a passing knowledge of Chris’s art, this was a great video. I instantly recognised him as the cover art from “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race” which has always stuck in my mind.
Super creepy! Good work!
Artwork is stunning beautifully designed and constructed. I agree with the Artist the biggest Monsters are the one's we can see...
BEAUTIFULLY DEMENTED Chris Mars is a bad ass....One day i'll get the confidence to submit my paintings and bio for artist corner. I love that you create that space in ur videos. My work is interesting but I'm still a little too green There is still an insecure monster in me that can only be squashed with more art practice and canvas time.
True artist. He was in The Replacements; yeah. 🧑🎨♾️🥁
The Best of The Best ;O!!
Thanks for another introduction, Mr Dweller
2 minute ad-read on a 17 minute video is criminal
Wow his paintings though strange are quite amazing!
Also maybe I need some ball deodorant as I call my junk Marky Mark and the funky bunch!
Damn. I'd like to put some of his work in my future house
Thanks for the video! Would love if you did Walton Ford. He is a big inspiration for me in my own art.
one of my favorite artists today has to be Phil hale, you would dig his stuff, what an interesting and dark world he creates. There is something about him and his mentor Rick Berry's art that touches a strange place in the reptilian brain. Probably the most skilled out there rn. Chris Mars seems to explore the biological horror where Bhil and Berry seem to be focused on the unfamiliar meeting the familiar. Lenora Carrington or Kathe kollwitz would also make a good video, there's lots of great artists out there. I love your videos
Oh, awesome, the Ligotti guy!
If you havent covered him already, I would really like to hear what your thoughts are on Wayne Barlowe, particularly the pieces from Barlowe's Inferno
I don't know if you take requests but could you do a video on Zelooperz art? He's a rapper who recently turned to painting and his paintings give off a really eerie nightmarish feeling. He is a newer artist so there might not be too much to talk about, but I found his work recently and have been obsessed with his music and paintings since I discovered them.
Thanks so much for the video, found so many cool artists who've inspired me through your videos.
Perfect guy to traumatize myself and children. Me: I wanna show you something. Kids: speed run like sonic the hedgehog
