I like how Gerald sees shadow as just his ultimate creation to save Maria at first, but Maria saw him as a person. Then in the audio log Gerald sees shadow as a person as well. It shows how Gerald grew to love shadow as his son.
This is the REAL Shadow, yes he may look harsh and is very blunt at times, but in reality he's a caring soul who helps all those who need it. His motivation is a promise that he'll keep no matter what.
I believe that shadow was originally created by professor gerald robotnik to be a hero like sonic.

He and Master Chief would get along quite well.
They are both Dark in their own ways, having experienced the Worst of Humanity, suffered Great Losses, and have Been Betrayed, but at their Core, they are _Heroes,_ and willing to keep the promises they make.
@@TheSonic1685 Of course. This was actually confirmed in the video Gerald recorded for Shadow to see when the Black Arms returned. Geraldo didn't want Shadow to become a weapon of the government, or a pawn for Black Doom. So he gave Shadow a soul based on Maria, and viewed him like his own son. While he was still gifted with immense power, Gerald (being the humanitarian he was) wanted Shadow to become humanity's savior, and protect Maria once she was cured.
It was only after Gerald died that he succumbed to insanity, and became a shell of the man he was (willing to program Shadow to carry out his doomsday plan).
By any means, fair or foul, good or evil, Hero or Dark. If Shadow has a mission, it will get done. And he does *NOT* care what you think about how he does it.
If only Sega treated Shadow the way the fans do...

Damn, that hurts. Had a cat named Shadow which my mom named for the same reason, followed her everywhere. He's been gone for about 7 years now, but now I remember why Shadow is my favorite character, not any edgy bs, not even his story really, just the demeanor and the name, keeps to himself, sometimes pushes others away, yet always cares weather he shows it or not. As cool as he may be, really he just reminds me of my cat.

We used to be best friends but eventually he grew up and began exploring the world
When we moved we had to leave him behind for his own safety

I know having to leave your buddy behind must've hurt as well, I hope he's doing well whenever he is and that you might even see each other again.

I had a dog whom I named after Shadow. I miss him every day and I didn't appreciate just how much of an amazing Christmas gift I had been given those 20 years ago...and he's been gone for over 6....he always followed me and my sister around like a shadow...and Shadow was my favorite Sonic character at the time...and he still is.

Shadow has definitely been through a lot in his life, this video proves that he’s a hero, like Sonic. Setting his differences aside and protect the planet that Gerald Robotnik and Maria wanted him to do because he was created to do just that. Losing Maria just broke him and Gerald took advantage of it, but I wonder if Gerald really wanted Shadow to stop him from enacting his revenge, because Shadow had a part of Maria’s Soul within him. Although he lost one family, he has a new one within Team Dark, and he wouldn’t have it any other way, such a great video dude
I have to agree with everything you said lol. Such true words. Also, if you haven't already, I recommend you check out Shadow’s First Christmas. The Sonic and Shadow alone part is so sweet and heartwarming and kind of builds on the family part in a way that you mentioned. It's personally my favorite video of Pixel's.
I feel like the recording was made after he made the video tape explaining his revenge against all the humans of earth. After realizing there is no reversing what he has created, he made this tape recording for shadow as basically an apology to shadow and essentially a way to help Shadow see (because Gerald is a genius and always thinks of steps ahead and thought about shadow possibly losing his way or being confused with amnesia) that yes he was created by very unorthodox means and such but was also made for one purpose, to protect what he and Maria cherish. And shadow did just that, he fulfilled more than just the promise he kept to Maria. And she couldn’t be more happier as she watches over him, in his shadow.

I don't know if Gerald did want Shadow to stop him after he went mad with grief but I bet deep down on a subconscious level he did because he knew Maria wouldn't want Shadow to be a destroyer.

The best description I've heard about Shadow yet, is that he's the Batman of the Sonic Universe. He's blunt but not cruel, Cold yet caring, quiet but Heroic. Shadow is the emotional core of what a quiet hero is and thats why he's so special

I think it's underrated how Gerald's message matches up 1:1 with Amy's animation, as if she's unknowingly repeating what he said back to Shadow to remind him what he fights for.
They should’ve made shadow and Amy have much more of a platonic relationship for this reason
If sonic or knuckles tried to the same thing it would escalate to a fight. So the fact that Amy got through to him says something

I adore the subversion of the line 'where there is light, there is also Shadow'. It really demonstrates who he is as a character wonderfully: Despite his name, he's not the opposite of light. He is an extension of it. Because even if he seems cold and edgy, he always does what he thinks is right. And that's what makes his character so beloved, I think.
Sometimes I feel like Shadow should be the main character. I can't describe how great this video is, I miss the old Shadow man.
He was, in one game. Now if we could just get a sequel that's done in a better way

This is criminally underrated for how touching this is; a dearing tribute to an arc of a character that got flanderized after '06.
It's sad the last true bit of character development happened all the way back in Unleashed.

Well, that was certainly something...something amazing in fact. Extremely well done. The dialogue was absolutely fantastically written and delivered, and the animation was likewise good if not even better. Very much a different look at Shadow the character than some other animations that involve him. Because Shadow's whole thing was never "my edge is so sharp it will cut you" just that he was the "ultimate lifeform" and functioned accordingly.
Also, the closing shot with the moon was pretty raw, especially following the "-There's Shadow" delivery.

Wish we had more moments like these in the games, Shad having short flashbacks about the Dr and Maria.
Shadow had a final moment on the Ark in Last Story of his game and so put his past behind him, that's why Shadow is the way he is in 06.
Thank you for including the scene where Amy asks Shadow to save the world. It's one of my favorite scenes in the series, and this is a fantastic video.
They better Put that scene in Sonic Movie 3! AMY NEEDS TO BE IN IT!

@@SB_Zeal Yeah. Lol Well, I’m a decently big fan, but.. haven’t really played any real Sonic games myself, besides a couple levels of one of the old 2D sides roll games. I usually watch the cutscenes, some gameplays, find out more details of them, watch animations, etc. lol so I pretty much do everything besides play the games because we don’t really have any of them. There’s Sonic Racing, but that’s a different kind of game. I do want to get Unleashed and Frontiers though. :)

Hmm this was absolutely great. Loved every second. It might just be me but this animation seems to take inspiration from the 25 anniversary character comics where Maria gives Shadow his name.

Shadow isn't some edgy try hard or cringy emo. He's a beacon of love and hope that has made it his sworn duty to protect all life. He'd never take anyone's life. He focuses on getting the job done and doing what's right, but never at the cost of becoming an emotionless piece of cardboard that tries to have no friends. I wish sega saw this as much as the fans do. Also idc what sega says, Rouge, Omega, and Sonic are his best friends.
Bro that was so good! The animation quality and voice acting and everything was just perfect. The ease in and out made the 3d animation look more lifelike, and the voice acting really took the animation to a whole new level for it. It had that SFM feeling to the animation, but wow compared to everything presented, it didn't matter. The writing for the dialouge was very good too, the beginning part was so clever on how he got his name, and the narration bit was so well written. Wish it went on for longer, you and everyone involved in this project really out did themselves!

Seeing the tape player just made me imagine Shadow sitting by the tape player for hours, even into the wee hours of the night when the rest of the world sleeps, just listening to this and any other scraps of tape he could salvage from the Ark on repeat. Maybe he’s searching for answers, for clues to his existence. Maybe he’s making sure he doesn’t forget Gerald and Maria’s voices again, like how their faces are slowly blurring in his mind. Maybe it’s something else entirely, but, no matter the reason, he sits there by that last remnant of his first family and finds comfort in the words he knows by heart.
I died of cuteness and wholesomeness I wish this was cannon this is why Maria and Shadow are my fav characters and sonic and silver as runner up. I can't express or show how much I loved this ty for posting this! 💓

This animation and overall dialogue is amazing! Nice work!! Shadow has always been my favorite character, and not only because he's edgy, but because he's relatable. People who don't know Shadow confuse him as being an edgelord, when he's really a misunderstood hedgehog with PSTD and grief--Had to watch the only person who he cared about die before his very eyes. People always saying that Shadow is a rude and brooding person, when he's really hurt and distancing himself from others due to his best friend, Maria's death, and how he doesn't want a repeat in that when he actually befriends someone (Rouge and Omega are the only people he truly cares about, and while he is distant and cold towards them, there are many instances in which he showed he cares). If Maria were still alive, Shadow would've acted like a completely different person---Almost akin to Sonic. In fact, Shadow respects Sonic since Sonic's LITERALLY the person Maria wanted Shadow to be.

That was awesome! I loved Gerald's speech, and having such an emotional video for Shadow is so sweet. He may look dark and sound edgy, but deep down he's a very complex character with a lot of trauma in his past and a caring soul.
Shadow might seem....... Serious brooding and edgy in the outside, someone who is mean. But in the inside, he has a caring soul and will protect people. He just went through alot.... A traumatizing experience like that is not something to easily forget or move on from. It takes time, especially having to loose someone who you really cared about and would protect. Alot of people think shadow has no feelings, but he does. He's Just..... Broken, hes also considered an "Anti-hero". Hes doing all this for maria, and to make her wish come true.
I don't think i wouldve been so brave if i went through that, he was really though to do that for maria because i wouldnt have done that since i would be SO ANGRY AND UPSET. He is truely a hero. And he is my number 1 favorite sonic character. Hes so brave

Is it wrong to say I prefer Shadow like this? While strong and mostly angry 24/7, when in reality he’s sad inside because the loss of Maria and his creator haunts him to this day.

This whole video was full of awesome concepts; 'where there's light... there's shadow', and him always being by Maria's side 'like a shadow' which resulted in his name. This is only 2 minutes long and it gave me all the feels
I just recently found this and it was amazing, it really captures Shadow as who he is: a hero through and through and not some egotistical jerk that he's been portrayed as recently, hopefully, we'll one day finally see his true self in Sonic Media.
I really want Sonic 3's Shadow to be like this.
A cool line and concept for sure. But nothing beats the coldest and hardest line this dude Shadow dropped. "Even if the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight as I always have."
This reminds me of a line I love from Kingdom Hearts. "You can't have light without darkness, because darkness is half of everything....Sorta makes you wonder why we ARE scared of the dark." We all have the capabilities to be good or bad. Having that in us isn't what makes us who we are. It's what we do with that ability that matters. Shadow at first, was the reason why people are afraid of the dark; it's what lurks in it. But now, he reminds us while the dark can be scary, we only have the dark because there's light as well.
Light and dark back to back...With Shadow, they mingle in a way that's done so well and so rarely in characters. I can't wait to see what Sega does with him in the future, because after Sonic Prime, things are looking pretty bright for him.
I love Shadow. He's a great incidental character that earns his title of being a main character of the series. I really hope Sonic Team would learn from the past and ready to take the series a bit more seriously like they did in the Adventure era
The road life takes us on seems to lack light these days, but we can always rely on others to help fuel our torch, even when we are surrounded by darkness. Our shadow will always be there waiting for our torch to run out, and until it does, the light will hold it back. In this case, because of Shadow's friendship with Maria, she kept his torch going and gave him light to truly see the right path, unlike Gerald and Eggman who left him to walk in the darkness of the cave. This is what I really hope Shadow's character becomes in the next Sonic movie.

This is an amazing tribute to the Shadow we all know and love, but can never seem to grasp in his many portrayals. What an excellently sentimental piece...
This is how Shadow should be. Loyal at heart and protector of the world above all else. While Sonic is quirky and jumps head-first into danger, Shadow is more serious and cautious with his actions, since he knows from experience what'll happen if he fails, but he should care just as much about helping those in need.
That should be the only difference between the two, but unfortunately he was reduced to a mere edgelord.
This is the most personality that Maria has ever had.
Now, this is the Shadow we knew from the start. I still wonder what went wrong. How he was turned into an edgelord, twisting his personality and then flanderizing it.
I've watched this So many times already. It's just so amazing and touching. It really honors Shadow's character in a way that not even SEGA has since SA2 when after the final hazard they heroes had a quiet moment and at the end creds they displayed Shadow transparent against the blue world he helped save and sacrificed his life for.

That's why I like Adventure(1999) to 2006 Sonic games. - Serious story and actually building things from one game to another. After 2006 each game is a solo thing and only Sonic focus.
