  • Using GaiaGPS, I was able to locate two forgotten homesites in the middle of a field. I spent the day searching for evidence of these homesites and my aimless wandering finally paid off.

    The overlay feature is cool. I use the PhilaGeoHistory website when bottle hunting in the city. Has multiple overlays from the 1870s 1890s, 1900s, 1940s, plus topo maps.

    Jocelyn, nice job as usual. You seemed a little off your game in this video however the content was amazing and helpful. I loaded both apps. Now we need an app to stop the rain. I am about an hour from you and the same conditions make getting out detecting almost impossible while trying to catch up on yard work in between swamp effects from the rains over the last few months. Thanks for the tricks of the trade!!!

    Mapworks or historicmapworks? is what I use at home, to do the overlay. It is awesome to be able to fade the old map over a satelite view, and see them both. But no map is perfect, so yea, you still have to walk around and scout. Makes me homesick to see the great weather you are experiencing. lol Have fun and keep doing what your doing

    • @RelicRecoverist
      @RelicRecoverist  6 років тому +1

      zettle 234 Yes! Historicmapworks are great for at home, but I like having an app that I can take with me. It’s so much easier to be able to orient your self with the GPS (well... when the maps line up.)

    • @zettle2345
      @zettle2345 6 років тому +1

      Have you sat down and talked with the farmer or landowner, and asked them if there are any rocky or hard pan areas in the field? The guy in the tractor can tell you if he has broken anything when he goes over a certain spot. Or if he can not disc as deep in this area or that. May be helpful. Anyway that's all I can think of to help ya from here. hehe Best of luck in your hunts Relic Recoverist, have fun out there

    It's funny how in the US a 200 year old place is old. I live in Finland, northern Europe, and this isn't a very old area when considering the whole of Europe. Some months ago I found my oldest coin by far, dating back to 1571. That is in the best 10% you can find in this area of Finland, but it is possible to find as old coins as 1200s.
    I still enjoy watching these Americans hunt :)

    • @bills6093
      @bills6093 6 років тому

      Well, that's because no one seems to count our indigenous people (and their artifacts and settlements), who were living here for far longer than 200 years. More like 15,000 years.

    • @kallekangasmaki311
      @kallekangasmaki311 6 років тому

      I excluded all natives (or in Europas case all pre-metal cultures) since their artifacts are not usually found in on themselves while metal detecting. Sure, you might find them by accident, but not really look for them. Two-three years ago I attended a dig in Finland, at an 5500 year late stone age site. Mostly pottery, knappings and some fragments of tools...

    • @bills6093
      @bills6093 6 років тому

      It's a pretty common hobby here in the US to look for stone tools and arrow heads and other worked stone artifacts. Many metal detector users also look for worked stone objects. It's awesome to find something like a Clovis point or stone arrow tip. I think these ancient North American people (and other ancient cultures) get overlooked or put in an inferior category because they did not need or use metal objects. Fortunately they left enough structures and artifacts so that we know quite a bit about them.

    • @kallekangasmaki311
      @kallekangasmaki311 6 років тому

      I'm not familiar with this, so thank you! We here don't have so much stone items to be found lying on the ground, though in rivers when they are emptier during the summer, sometimes flakes of quartz can be found. Well, learnt something new

    Try also Avenza PDF maps. This app is where you can purchase National Forest and BLM maps as well as download USGS quadrangle maps for free. Recently historical maps have been available. Once downloaded the map is on your device and your GPS position is plotted on the map. You do not need cell or data service to use the downloaded maps!!! Many maps are free and the app is also free. No property data is available however.

      I love checking new Patreon extra's with that morning cup of coffee, see ya there and maybe I can find and link a 5 paragraph article from a Civil War Veteran describing the backwoods sneak route of a Confederate ambush unit he could see in the woods out the back window of a private residence next to the river where his unit docked and the skirmish that ensued. Your apps may put you right on the exact house along the river??

    A lot of old settlements, etc, are often found by aerial photography when the ground is dry, which would obviously be unhelpful in these conditions. Also, there is usually difference in the growth of plants where there has been settlement, or old buildings. I am not sure if it is the same in the US as it is over her in Britain.
