  • Set against the backdrop of hedonistic, swinging, early '60s London, Telstar shares the stranger-than-fiction true story of Joe Meek (Tony Award-winner Con O'Neill, who originated the role on London stage). An enormously talented but quirky maverick, Meek revolutionized British pop, enjoying enormous success early on with the biggest selling record of its time, Telstar, the first U.K. album to hit #1 on American charts. But the flamboyant, tone-deaf songwriter was also a deeply troubled soul -- dabbling in the occult and addicted to amphetamines -- and his decline was as meteoric and spectacular as his rise. Also starring two-time Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) and Pam Ferris (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and featuring an original soundtrack.

Con O'Neill should have won both the BAFTA and Oscar for this performance.

Brilliant film, bought it on DVD after I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago. Excellent cast. Such a sad story. I think I've become a bit of a fan of both Joe Meek and Con O'Neill. I did a bit of research on both men, and was quite amazed that both were called Robert, uncanny! The ending was very sad, especially hearing Please Stay by Duffy. Very emotional.

This is absolutely worth it look. It isn't perfect, but it's wild and funny and dark, and an important reminder of (arguably) the most successful and influential UK producer of all-time.

Uniquely excellent film. Black tragicomedy (dramatic work incorporating both tragic and comic elements.) Reminded me of Prick Up Your Ears, the Joe Orton story, another unique fact-based British film.

This film get's a bad rep for many historical inaccuracies but don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Con 'o'neill is a juggernaut in this. I'm just sad they didn't include a bit on the making of 'I hear a new world' which is one of the most bizarre records ever made. It's what got me into him. If a little red top scandal get's people into Meek, then who cares eh? Joe was a fan of elabourate publicity, and would most likely have approved of the embellishments to create a legendary tale.

I was really excited at finding out about this film and headed straight to the trailer for a quick synopsis. My heart sank when I saw James Corden's face appear on the screen.

One of the great British Rock n Rock films, up there with Stardust, That'll Be The Day and Quadraphenia. Fantastic.

Telstar reached #1 for two weeks in Ireland in October 1962.

Interesting to see James Corden as drummer Clem Cattini before his US talk show gig. Great music and Con O'Neill was brilliant as the troubled Joe Meek. Flawed story but still interesting to see how life was like at Meek's Holloway Street makeshift recording studio.

The "flawed story" was actually a true story. Yes there is a bit of dodgy acting in there, but Con O'Neill portrays Joe Meek wonderfully throughout his downfall, giving a performance any Oscar winner would be proud of.

@@soundsdigital I had seen Con O'Neil do comedy before this and his performance in this movie is his best performance I have ever seen.

And as usual the band got ripped off and hardly saw any money. When dealing with managers promoters and record companies the musicians are usually treated like mugs.

It's reality. Every shouting is not comedy, portraying an eccentric character is not bad acting.

It was a bad movie that appealed to a very niche audience.
