  • We have ditched the bus to visit family in South Africa and this week we are taking you along with us on a mountain weekend getaway to the magic town of Hogsback. We will do some exploring and adventuring and try to answer the question: Is Hogsback the inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien The Lord of the Rings?

In our quest for seeking out a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle, we made a plan that includes zero waste living, tiny home living and full-time travel. We considered buying an RV, looked at trailers and airstreams but settled on doing a bus conversion for our off-the-grid, tiny house on wheels. We bought a 1996 MCI 102 D3 coach bus and with the Bus Demolition and Interior Shell complete, we turned it into our Tiny Home on Wheels and are now traveling!

You should have filmed the drive up the mountain.....round and round up the mountain as you leave the ordinary world behind and the terrain changes as you go, until at the top you are in a new and magical world. A different climate, forests, streams, wonderful views.....a truly different world

We went there a few times as kids, stayed in a cabin/cottage and my dad would make us toast in the fireplace, it was magical. RIP Dad ❤

Just take extra care U folks... As a couple of years ago... Two dear old friends of my mother were brutally murdered not far from the Hogsback Hotel...in their houses in a period of 2 to 3 months... They never bothered to find the culprits to this day...So be extra vigilant and take care... As those cretins down there have respect for anything living nor do they hold any reverence for it either...😮.

@@Rehabit8if If this person lives there then they should and would know about the new name . I think the person may not be accepting of the name change probably having being born there. That's quite understandable. I would not like a sudden name change to my beloved City either.

@@Rehabit8 LOL - obviously fully aware of that. The invented name, by the far-left Woke ANC regime of "Gqeberha" is Fake and Marxist - cultural Marxism to be exact - no-one gets to change any name because "they don't like the original name" - you cannot gazette a new answer to 2+3=5 because you regard it as "colonial maths" once taught to to our ancestors - same applies to place names.

Not this nonsense again. Tolkien left South Africa when he was four and he was never in the Hogsback area. The whole myth was started by a campsite in the area being named Hobbiton 10 years after the publishing of the Hobbit.
