Kate Bush - Get Out Of My House

- Kate said about this song "it's all about the human as a house. The idea is that as more experiences actually get to you, you start learning how to defend yourself from them. The human can be seen as a house where you start putting up shutters at the windows and locking the doors - not letting in certain things. I think a lot of people are like this - they don't hear what they don't want to hear, don't see what they don't want to see. It is like a house, where the windows are the eyes and the ears, and you don't let people in. That's sad because as they grow older people should open up more. But they do the opposite because, I suppose, they do get bruised and cluttered. Which brings me back to myself; yes, I have had to decide what I will let in and what I'll have to exclude."
Lyrics:
("Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw!")
When you left, the door was
(slamming!)
You paused in the doorway
(slamming!)
As though a thought stole you away.
(slamming!)
I watched the world pull you away.
(Lock it!)
So I run into the hall,
(Lock it!)
Into the corridor.
(Lock it!)
There's a door in the house
(slamming).
I hear the lift descending.
(slamming!)
I hear it hit the landing,
(slamming!)
See the hackles on the cat
(standing).
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).
I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("Let me in!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Won't let you in).
(Get out of my house!)
No stranger's feet
Will enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
I wash the panes,
(Get out of my house!)
I clean the stains away.
(Get out of my house!)
This house is as old as I am.
(Slamming.)
This house knows all I have done.
(Slamming.)
They come with their weather hanging 'round them,
(Slamming.)
But can't knock my door down!
(Slamming.)
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it).
This house is full of m-m-my mess.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of m-m-mistakes.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of m-m-madness.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of, full of, full of fight!
(Slam it.)
With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).
With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).
I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("It's cold out here!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Get out of my house!)
(Won't let you in).
(Get out of my house!)
No stranger's feet
(Get out of my house!)
Will enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
I wash the panes.
(Get out of my house!)
I clean the stains.
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
Won't enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
Yeah! Won't let you in!
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
"Let me in!
"Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the memories!
Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the Devil Dreams!"
I will not let you in!
Don't you bring back the reveries.
I turn into a bird,
Carry further than the word is heard.
"Woman let me in!
I turn into the wind.
I blow you a cold kiss,
Stronger than the song's hit."
I will not let you in.
I face towards the wind.
I change into the Mule.
"I change into the Mule."
Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw...
"Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw!"

one of the strangest, weird, scary, insane songs ive ever heard. FUCKING LOVE. IT. One of the best things shes ever done. The whole album of the Dreaming is a freaking underrated masterpiece.
Kate always has a song for every situation in our lives. Listening to this one today, for some support, as my psychotic landlord tried breaking into my place and yelled that I was a gothic (?!) through the door
That's funny as hell. There was a kid who couldn't get the baddies out of his house. So some kindly people made a secret space in his closet so he could hide from them.
Only a true genius can conceive of this song.
"I change into the mule". 28 years later and I still get the tiny fingers running thru my hair and down my neck. Scariest song of all time, to me. Mr. Marrs, I am seriously blown away. I thought Kate made a new video for this for some reason. But, you did this? Amazing job man.
Hi, I feel the same. I adore this song, but it scares me!
I feel like this song was a direct gift to abuse victims. I don’t know but something about it all felt so profound. When she turned into the mule at the end after failing to escape the male voice. It felt like when you push back against the abuse when it changes you into something ugly.
This is, by far, the best fan video I have ever seen. Your timing is impeccable. The imagery is perfect. Bravo from a 40 year fan of Kate.
Thank you! 😊
I always thought this was about emotional vulnerability, and the consequences of not judging the other person correctly. You let the wrong person in, and they wreak havoc.
Kate once said something like:
_"You can shut yourself away, but sometimes all those terrors and fears can get inside you and chase you. So there comes a time when you have to just turn round and face them and scare them all away."_
*EEE-YOORE!!*
{:O:O:}
I am happy to share a space with other persons that also believe this song is awesome.
Kate about Get Out Of My House:
'The Shining' is the only book I've read that has frightened me. While reading it I swamped around in its snowy imagery and avoided visiting certain floors of the big, cold hotel, empty for the winter. As in 'Alien', the central characters are isolated, miles (or light years) away from anyone or anything, but there is something in the place with them. They're not sure what, but it isn't very nice.
The setting for this song continues the theme - the house which is really a human being, has been shut up - locked and bolted, to stop any outside forces from entering. The person has been hurt and has decided to keep everybody out. They plant a 'concierge' at the front door to stop any determined callers from passing, but the thing has got into the house upstairs. It's descending in the lift, and now it approaches the door of the room that you're hiding in. You're cornered, there's no way out, so you turn into a bird and fly away, but the thing changes shape, too. You change, it changes; you can't escape, so you turn around and face it, scare it away.
(Kate Bush Club newsletter, October 1982)
The song is called 'Get Out Of My House', and it's all about the human as a house. Which brings me back to myself; yes, I have had to decide what I will let in and what I'll have to exclude.
(Rosie Boycott, 'The Discreet Charm Of Kate Bush'. Company (UK), 1982)
It's meant to be a bit scary. It's just the idea of someone being in this place and there's something else there... You don't know what it is. The track kept changing in the studio. This is something that's never happened before on an album. That one was maybe half the length it is now. The guitarist got this really nice riff going, and I got this idea of two voices - a person in the house, trying to get away from this thing, but it's still there. So in order to get away, they change their form - first into a bird trying to fly away from it. The thing can change as well, so that changes into this wind, and starts blowing all icy. The idea is to turn around and face it. You've got this image of something turning round and going "Aah!"' just to try and scare it away.
(Kris Needs, 'Dream Time In The Bush'. ZIgZag (UK), 1982)
I believe this is her single most amazing song-- and that's saying something!
It happens with an intensity and genius that no one else can touch.
Every bit as unsettling as the song itself. Well done!
Kris Carter Thank you Kris.
This song is also doing very well in Kate's discography of 121 listed in a streaming group. It is the most active mover of the bunch. Early June it was at slot 66. It progresses up to #65 in mid-June; #64 in mid-Aug; #63 in late August; and now #62 late October. It presently has over 2 million streams - which means people are really digging it. Good for Kate.
My favourite lyric is always:
This house is as old as I am,
this house knows all I have done.
same x
I am french and when this album came out I could only "feel" this song, not understanding all the lyrics, and your clip is exactly the way I visualized it at this time. Kate always amazed me in her way to inject emotions inside her words and sounds. Brilliant, thank you again mrMarrs!!
bah, pareil !
:-)
I used to picture a bunch of blokes in the control room laughing their asses off as she sung this. While she tried to get through it without laughing herself.
@@Frip36Well, even idiots have opinions... 😮
That's an astonishingly well assembled video! Really, this deserves to be placed in the Canon of Kate Bush videos, even if unofficial. Really great work, kudos! Even with the extra-source Foley work and intro music - it tells the story compellingly, which I believe she would appreciate!
thank you Billsy. One of my favorite Kate Bush songs and I just had to put imagery to it. I love all her songs.
I totally agree with Billsy.😃
Brilliant, Fantastic, Out of this world!!!
Thank you👌
Bush is a genius. Genuinely. Reads like poetry. I turn into the mule. EEH OHH!!! Love it. Beautiful and macabre.
I also think Kate Bush is a genius. "Beautiful and macabre" - for this song comes from a creative mind
I always found this album such a beguiling oddity even in her eccentric oeuvre!
Hit us with more cringe words.
@Frip36 What, dear... you don't comprehend plain English?
The dreaming one of my fave albums ever and this song cathartic and powerful!!!!
I actually thought she finally made a video for this track when I saw it because it looks so authentic. Good work!
I stumbled on this video as I was reminiscing about the music I loved when I was young. This was by far my favorite Kate Bush song - it exemplified her creativity, her imagination, her versatility. You did an impeccable job mirroring in film all of those attributes. Bravo!
In Italy, when complimenting a female, it's "Brava!"
@@Frip36 I was complimenting the videographer, actually. 😉
You're a genius, Mr.Marrs :-)
Thank you!
Pure genius! ❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
Can you imagine if this was the only Kate song you ever heard? LOL
The Halloween season brought me here. Fantastic song, incredible video!
Along with Waking The Witch this is one song I realy wish Kate Bush had done an official video for. I have loked this song for a long long time.
I always thought this song evoked the terror of a home invasion, the video increased the impression. It makes sense either way since unwelcome ideas could be seen that way. This is one of Kate's most compelling songs.
Kate at her maniacal best.
One of my absolute favourite Kate tracks! And an excellent video. Very professional.
This is done so very well. The imagery is intense and fitting. Absolutely love the work you put into this. Thank you
Great Video, really illustrates the song. Brilliant
Great song from one of our best artists, no one could ever do what she has done. every record she had made has some sort of meaning to someone. Wish i'd got to see her live. xx
I'd love to see someone brave enough to do this at karaoke.
Nina Hagen would do it. And do it in her underwear to boot.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@Frip36 I didn't know Nina was a karaoke fan.
This song is such a masterpiece!!! My second favourite od Kate's songs. My number one is "Breathing". It's a work of art. I adore also "Love & Anger", "The Sensual World","The Dreaming". Well, ok, I love all of her songs😄(maybe with the exception of "Ruberband Girl" and "Eat the music". She, her music, her class are
are so unique. Sorry for my far from perfect English. I'm from Poland and Kate is still very popular here. I often hear her on the radio.Greetings for all Kate's'fan from over the world.😄
FranceGall4Ever Hello from Oregon U.S. I have often dreamed of going to Poland. I have a friend there. I think maybe in 2022. I wanted to say I love all of Kate's music also. Isn't it timeless? I never get tired of it. She has changed after every album a new sound. She is a true artist. Please say hello to beautiful Poland for me, OK? :)
I adore Love And Anger too . Brilliant choice ! ( and like you I must add a lot of other Songs .....) Love and Respect from France 🙏🌸🙏
@Mirror Time Thank you for your nice words. Poland is a beautiful country so you won't be dissapointed. You are very welcome here. I love the fact that Kate is not doing endless copies of the song that launched her career (Wuthering Heights) like many artists do. She tries different sound on every of her albums. Every song has different atmosphere and unique sound to it..And you're right that Kate's music is classic, She's so creative and she writes her songs by herself - music and lyrics which is not that common. Besides, she seems so smart, tender-hearted, amiable. I can say I love her.♥️😃
@Youk Youk Thank you! It's cool that we have the same taste in Kate's songs. 😀 I greet you warmly from snowy, winterly Poland.🥶🤗😉
This has always been about self autonomy for me. A woman's autonomy over her body and mind. Get out of my house.
Wow. Great job! This has been one of my favorite Kate Bush albums since it came out. In fact, I wasn't a huge fan until The Dreaming. I actually thought this was an official video at first and was beginning to wonder why I hadn't seen it before.
You are amazing! What astonishing work that goes into these memorable songs that have lived dearly in my heart for many many years. I named my daughter after Kate and she was blessed to even have some of her features such as the pouty lips, expressive large eyes and her very fair skin. Kate Bush was and will always be my inspiration and my treasured teacher in the rarity of her art of ingenuity! Bravo to you to breath life in her music with your talent of phenomenal imagery ! Thank you!
Love this.
A beautiful genius I watched the shinning after listening to this
It looks like the official video as far as I'm concerned. Very professional standard. Thank you so much for sharing this and well done.
One of the scariest songs ever written, along with "00-Infinity Symbol" by Aphrodite's Child.
Amazing visuals again, just beautiful.
YOU HAVE A GIFT OF CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF THIS GREAT SONG....NOW, SHOW THE WORLD WHO YOU TRULY ARE
NOV 22 2019.
What a great job! Thank you.
Awesome visuals to this brilliant song. Thanks
The best song from her best album. Love the great percussion throughout... with *no cymbals*. I think that's thanks to Peter Gabriel but can't prove it.
Probably was Mr Gabriel's idea... though it was Robert Fripp of King Crimson who influenced PG there... Fripp at the time (late 70's early 80s) wasn't a fan of cymbals & hi-hats & this probably pushed PG in the direction of African drumming, which he used a lot on albums 3 & 4
Oh The Dreaming album... Kate "bonkers" Bush. Sheer Madness this song. But brilliant. Oh I love Kate's Universe... Wonderful video too :-)
A true work of genius! Both Kate's soundtrack and your visuals! I'm sure Kate herself would be impressed.
Great vids, always such a pleasure to look back at them.
That was an awesome interpretation of this song. I enjoyed watching it!
Happy 60th birthday Kate. X
this song inspired from Kate watching Stephen Kings' " The Shining" ?
reading the book
Fantastic song - I remember hearing this when I was a kid and being haunted by it. Great album - much underated
I really appreciate the time and care it must have taken to craft this video.
Ahhh Mr Marrs, you got it again, you caught the essence of her song eeeeorr,,eee arrrr, eeee orrr! ;)
Excellent. Thanks to whoever made it and to you for uploading it.
OH the birds at the end were perfect!!!!
Heeee-haaawwwwww!!!!!
c'est tout simplement superbe !!! beau boulot , tues génial !!
Ooh I just love it. Some great choices of imagery in there!
Superb video!
Nice to see a clip from The Comic Strip Presents...

Thank you again MrMarrs!!!
Great video, really atmospheric. I wish it was a film! I might go and watch the movie that some of the footage is from!
absolutely brilliant Brian.....suitably spooky....wow x
Jan 20, 2021 in America. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!
(pissed off victorious donkey noise go here)
Since it was released (on The Dreaming) I've heard this as an angry woman taking back her power by throwing a man out of her house - her queendom - and out of her life. Kate's version of "I Will Survive" (go on now go, walk out that door, just turn around now, you're not welcome anymore ...), rather than hearing it as a neurotic shutting out of other people.
Yes, that's it. It's the trauma of an exploded relationship. His voice, like the wind, is trying to get to her, but she's "barred and bolted."
The House is her heart or her mind
AMAZING
Very well edited Video! Thank you.
When you play Wuthering Heights and then this after. Yeah...
Same here
Try ‘Waking The Witch’ after as well. Great dark combination.
Wonderful job on the video!! I came here because I'm 5 days into a week of Covid isolation & this will be the song I play in 2 days time when I... "get out of my house!"
I wish Kate had made a video for this song -- I always picture a mélange of Wuthering Heights, The Dreaming & Sat In Your Lap, set in an abandoned Victorian house. Kind of like this, actually. Well done!
Wow fan made! Well done!
PS. to my earlier comments. MrMarrs - you did this video by yourself?😲 Wow! What a great work. I was convinced that it is the official video. Bravo!👏👏👏😃
thank you. Yes I've made quite a few fan made videos over the years. I'd like to remake this video without the sound effects, I love the song and I didn't quite get the sound balance right in some parts of the video. But we live and learn x x x
@MrMarrs I like the song and the sound effects do the song justice. Don't be so harsh on yourself, MrMarrs. I didn't notice anything wrong with the sound balance. All of your videos are well-thought-out and consistent with the songs' themes. You are brilliant. Thank you for your hard work.👏😃 PS. I'm sorry if I made any English mistake. Greetings from Poland to you and every Kate's fan. 👋😃
Best video EVER!
What a shame that ratings have been disabled! I want to LOVE this video!
Awesome! Awesome! AWESOME!!!
Some nice possibly implied references to Pull Out The Pin at 1.24 and 2.41 too.
I want this house!!!
OK, but I still like that house - seems all the nice houses are haunted.
superbe video, on pourrait croire que c'est une officielle , j'adore !
Thanks for the answer MrMarrs :-) I will looking more .
Very well done.
Very well done video..
WOW!!!!
I propose to consider it as the official music video for the "Get Out Of My House" ;))
most of the footage is from the horror film Boogeyman with Barry Pepper.
"I'm barred and bolted."
this works!
What a lot of effort, it really paid off
My kind
genius
I want to know where all this footage came from. Some looks familiar including a clip from a Tori Amos song “spark.” But I’m not sure. All clips looks so very interesting where I’d like to watch originals.
@alishaharper5860 I can only help with the first and last sequences with Kate - coming up empty with the crow sequences. First is Kate in the 1990 comedy film "Les Dogs". The last sequence with a ghostly-looking Kate is a clip from her "Experiment IV" video, with her playing a banshee.
