IKEA Countertops Desk Setup I 4K

- Ikea desk setup A DIY of Ikea's Home office computer desk hack using Karlby countertops and Alex drawer units. It's popular for a reason, particularly if you work from home. This is my take with a few extra custom office desk accessories thrown in.
I'm giving my home office/studio a total makeover and chose the Ikea Karlby kitchen counters and Alex drawer units, combined with 4 Adils legs. This is a straightforward, no fuss way of getting a large computer desktop workspace and reasonable amount of storage, without breaking the bank. The countertops aren't exactly cheap, but are reasonable enough. This layout gives me a large L shaped desk, with room to grow. I made a monitor stand, filmmaker charging station, display shelf etc. It's still a work in progress... Cheers!

I had a similar idea, but the countertops seemed heavier than regular tabletops. I wasn't sure if it would be stable, but it looks perfectly fine in the video. Thank you for sharing! :)
You’re Welcome, they are pretty heavy, but yes very stable setup. Thanks for Watching!

@@DIYFotoWorks thank you boss
Great video man, just one question, if anybody can ask:
When it came to attaching the legs to the countertop, did you pre-drill those or did you just screw the legs into it? Im worried of splitting the countertop if I screw everything together without drilling first
Thanks, Definitely a good idea to pre-drill the leg mounting plate holes. Also helps keeping everything nicely aligned and much easier starting your screws. Thanks for Watching!
Hello, what do you think about the depth of the tabletop? Are you too close to the monitor?
I don’t think so, it’s never been an issue for me. I spend many hours editing video and photos. Of course you could mount your monitor on a mounting arm. Hope this helps. Thanks for Watching 😊
@@DIYFotoWorks Thanks for the quick answer!
@@anl1919 No Problem.
do you attach the wood block to the drawers? if so, how?
I didn’t attach the tops to the drawer units, just weight/ gravity. I did place the small protective dots. Hasn’t moved at all. But if you want to for more stability, remove the drawers, pre drill and use particle board screws. Thanks for Watching!
Are these countertops very heavy? If I get a 94 inch would I need a second person to help me get it up 5 flights of stairs?
Yes, they’re very heavy. 5 Flights, definitely get a helper if you can. However I moved 2 of the smaller sized counters around without too much effort. Good Luck! 🙂
@@DIYFotoWorks thank you!
@@hilalasmat9609 you’re welcome
Yes
did you pre-drill holes for the legs or did you just use the screws and directly drilled it in?
I pre drilled legs, marked with pencil. Definitely a good idea, keeps everything straight. Thanks for Watching. 😊
Is the top stable? Or am I supposed to "glue" to the alex? Thanks
The top will be perfectly stable, gravity will hold it in place if everything is relatively level. Make sure to adjust each leg leveller, the counters are pretty heavy particle board core. Mine don’t move, a year on. Of course you could use an L bracket to secure your countertops if it concerns you. Hope this helps. 🙂
@@DIYFotoWorks thanks a lot. I was considering to put some rubber adesive on top of Alex to improve the friction, Just to be sure
@@imema01 Not a bad idea, I did use there tiny little included bumpers, but they don't do much.
Did you have to pre-drill holes for the legs?
Yes, Definitely a good idea, mark with pencil drill in centre. 😊 Thanks for Watching!
did you treat your desk top with polyurethane or wood oil?
Danish Oil, but you could add a polyurethane topcoat for even more protection.
Desk depth?
25 1/2 inches deep.
does it just sit on alex drawers? or did you connect them
Yes, just gravity, My desk never moves. But you could use L brackets for extra security. Thanks for Watching. 🙂
Whats your desk height, I mean the height from the Alex drawer to the karlby. Mine is 73 cms. I find an ideal height of 68 Cms, so I'm pretty stuck as to how to reduce this height.
Mine is 74 CM to top of desk, it really can’t be any lower. That includes the little rubber pads between the Alex drawer and bottom of counter.
@@DIYFotoWorks Thanks for the response. Still can you sit properly? I found 68 cm to be ideal. Maybe because im short. Im 157 cms tall.
@@honestreview9019 Maybe, I’m exactly 6 feet tall, I find the height fine, and actually considered raising it slightly with small riser blocks, but with my IKEA chair it’s been good at the 74 cm, and I’ve left it.
3:15 what is this lighting model called?
It's an Amaran Light Panel, it's excellent. There is an Amazon Link in the description section of this video. Amaran P60c RGBWW LED Panel Video Light amzn.to/3ZalTlF Thanks for Watching!

The table to dimensions please
I used 74 inch counter sections. Two of them, and shortened one section by about 18 inches.
I thought there was particle board inside and would result in you being able to see it when cut
@@JoonbiTCG There is a particle board core with a veneer of real wood.
Was the Karlby difficult to cut?
Not at all, I used a fine cut blade, not particularly sharp, and went slow. 6 1/2 inch cordless Saw. 😊
