- Last week we found this awesome Mantispid (AKA mantisfly) in our garden. I was super excited to find it and film it. While I watched this insect on a leaf a few different insects ran into it including an aphid, some ants and a very angry wasp looking for a fight. Watch this video to see how this insect fared in battle. No insects were killed during the making of this video.

I swear the mantis-fly is like the peak wasp build. Sure it has some weaknesses, but having the range and deadly effectiveness of a mantis in a body that is adapted for flight is just OP. Nature had to nerf them with specific respawn requirements.
Mantis can already fly decently this one looks like its visuals are hornet but i bet its still just as clumsy

Mantises are such cool and intimidating bugs. They don’t really act like any other bug and seem oddly human compared to the bugs around them. They are so cool to just observe and witness their uniqueness.
Yes! The plural is mantids btw, but they are amazing little critters. I keep a couple different species and they've got really cool personalities. They seem to have no fear of people either. They are also extremely visual insects, relying on their sight more than most bugs. I think this is part of what makes them seem more relatable to us humans.

@@drhexagonapus I was looking at one a few days ago on a vine right outside my backdoor. He turned his little head straight at me and started waving his little arms. I stuck my hand out and he hopped right on. I spent the next thirty minutes just holding him out to leaves covered in aphids, he would pluck them one at a time and gobble them up. Went back towards my back door and he started waving his arms at his vine, so I held him out and he jiggled right back into it. Love those little turds lol.

Reminds me of when I found a huge mantis in the backyard, I was sitting in front of it watching it and it was completely still and I looked away for a second and looked back and it was gone, was very creeped out by the sudden disappearance of such a large insect (and it really was utterly massive and brown in color)

Its just incredible to know that a lot of insects, mantis as one of them could evolve into something that mimics something. Their looks changes so much. And in her, especially the wings.
Mantidflies aren’t actually mantids, from what I’ve read, they’re a rare species of lacefly. But the way they evolved to mimic TWO different species is incredible!!

I love this creature's philosophy. Mantids strike to kill; Mantisflies strike to ... um... throw you away? Bzz bzz in that case come as close as you like.
The wasp isn’t making the mantid move by force! It’s sensory reaction! Any closer and literally they would be actually touching face-to-face, so before that wasp closes the remaining distance, the mantid jumps back. Could be a startled response as well. But, the antenna moving on the wasp isn’t actually going to have enough force generated to act as a battering ram or even a springboard of sorts. The movement of the antenna is for information and I’m guessing the leg the wasp used to “knock” the mantid off the leaf was more so to communicate with the mantid. Mimicry could lend the wasp to falsely believe the mantid is able to understand their commutation methods.
Im so glad this just randomly popped up on my feed. I never knew watching insect brawls could be so entertaining lol! The ant yeet was pretty hilarious, had to watch that part a couple of times 🤣

First off, I respect the hell out of the fact that you did all this on leaves, and not trapping them in a jar offering no option to opt out. The opting out is a part of nature, and we never really get to see it cause they are always forced to fight. Secondly, I think it's cool that the mantispid seemed to know that one sting from the wasp is deadly, and wasn't fighting with aggression to kill, he was fighting with defence and evasion, difference between tiger Kung fu and judo. It's so neat that it's more of a lacewing, I think ant lions are a type of lacewing, it's also neat that not only is it a mimic it's also experiencing convergent evolution with mantis claw appendages, millions of years ago it was just a long fly and it said to itself I want to be a wasp and a praying mantis boom here we are
