Galway Hornpipe -- mandolin

- I was inspired to learn this tune a couple of weeks ago after hearing Irish Jack (IRI5HJ4CK)play it so well on his accordion video. So I posted my attempt --but I have a ways to go before I catch up to young Jack I am afraid!
This is a fine old Irish fiddle tune that does not seem to be played too much -- a pity because is a lot of fun to play there seem to be endless variations you can make to the tune by sticking in triplets and pauses here and there.
All I know about the tune is that it is named after the city of Galway, the seaport on the western side of Ireland -- County Galway to be exact. But I could find few detailed notes about the tune per se.
Its played here in the key of D-major which seems to be the most common key to perform it in. The chord sequence is very busy and a bit tricky -- you go along nicely with D A D in the A-part and then comes a little G E A D and be ready for a quick Bm chord in the minor sounding part right after the start of the B-section.
The tempo here is 160 bpm which is a sprightly (and probably a tad TOO fast for me as you can see). The backup chording and rhythm is provided by a computer. The start is a little rocky because I have to start it early and jump in -- almost at the wrong place!
It is played on a vintage (1919) Gibson F-2 Mandolin. I really love this old mandolin for Celtic tunes.
Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching. If I could play a mandolin half as smoothly as you work that fiddle I'd be thrilled.
Thanks for watching! It is a great tune -- hornpipes are so non-descript -- not a jig, not a reel not a dance. Rather something to be played on a hornpipe -- or a mandolin! Smile.
Very nice tune! I like your version of it. I learned this tune a few years ago and forgot about it till now. Had to break out mando and give it a try. I forgot how much fun this tune is to play.
Hey I love this new song and the background music is perfect plus your are playing much more clearly. By the way, I'm glad you enjoyed Yankee Doodle!
Thank you for the nice comments. I listened to your group play this song and I would be very pleased if I woudl be able to play that well. Thanks for viewing and please keep posting you have a great group of musicans.
Great job! Very nice mandolin. Thanks.
The oval Gibby sounds great Bernie! Cool tune, nicely done!
Thank you for the kind words. Its a great tenor banjo tune too!
I certainly appreciate tyour comments -- thank you. Gallway is a fun song as are so many Irish tunes... hornpipes always seem interesting to me -- being neither a reel or a jig -- I often wonder where that are in the bigger scheme of things dance-wise.
Thanks much!
Thanks for the kind words. Keep picking out the blues on that Epiphone!
Thanks for the remarks -- much appreciated. Yes its a great tune and you can do a lot with it -- not all Celtic tunes are smooth on a mandolin but this one is.
OOPS! I meant I'm glad you enjoyed Liberty!
By the way, did you learn this song from TAB?
