Steve, let me be brutally honest: When I saw your video of your 4th or 5th day trying to ride a bowl a few months ago, and considering the age you were starting out at... I counted you out. But man did you ever put in the work to prove me wrong. This is a real accomplishment and inspiration for others who might be wondering if they missed the boat to try to learn something new and physically challenging beyond their 30's. Fantastic job! When I go surfing sometimes I have long layovers in LAX. I'm going to start planning for it on my next trip to work in enough time to hit this dream spot!
This video was a serious motivator. After just getting started in surfskating over a year ago(with a 15 year absence from surfing but with a past of more than 15 years hardcore surfing), I rode the streets almost everyday the roads were dry. We have long paths so doing 5 miles a day was not unusual. I rode the streets like I was surfing. Eventually, I wanted to add some vertical so I was dabbling in the transitions and bowl at local skatepark. During this time, I saw your new bowl 30 day video and it made me want to accelerate my skills here. Thanks a lot! It worked. Surfskating on roads and paths will be quite similar to pumping down the line on a surfboard, although one can practice more stuff like cutbacks and sliding the tail. It will tune those muscles and enhance technique. Meanwhile, riding the bowl will give a 'sort of' surf feeling of being on a face of the wave and riding it how you want.
Keep crushing it dude! The park looks great. Awesome to see your progress in the bowl. I'm looking forward to see where you progress towards from here!
So cool Steve, and mega inspiring! Im heading off to try my first bowl session next week. 🤞🏼 A suggestion for a video: a couple of tips for beginner bowlriders based on your experience of the 30 day process you have just been through? There are precious few videos on UA-cam directed at surfskate bowlriding beginners. Thanks, and keep spreading your stoke!
Dang man. I’ve been to Venice a. Bunch when living in Arizona but really just learned about surf skating !! Used to carve the hell out of my pintail sector 9 longboard
This is so good - you've really found your flow! Thinking back to a few months ago when you were saying "bowl riding isn't my thing" and thinking you were missing out :-)
Steve - great Vid! I love your progression. Please consider a video on how you dropped in to the bowl on the 2nd half of the vid … I’ve ‘splatted’ several times attempting this and would love your insight!
This is so motivational! I only started surf skating as an old this summer, and rode my first bowl at the end of the season! I've decided bowl riding is my favorite thing though - how can I optimize my deck for that?
Man Steve, just found your channel. I'm inspired man, always wanted to ride a bowl but at 38 I thought game over... but know i'm think buy a surf skate and get on with it. Keep it up brother thanks for the vids you da man!
I have a 33×9" shaped deck with 169 Independent flat black flat bar rear truck & a 9" Caliber II (Flat black IKP) front truck. This is my Surf-Skate! Did tons of research and this performs perfectly, 60mm Powell dragons allow for Park/Street/Cruiser
I'm coming from Australia this september to take my kids to Disneyland and I've set aside a day to come here after watching skaters at this park on instagram for 2 years! It's s dream of mine to skate here, but I'm nervous! Still feel like a beginner as I started in my mid 30s! Any tips? Plan to come super early to get a turn? Is it super hard to get momentum from the smaller roll in? I'm excited but scared haha :-)
@@SurfskateLove I have a high volume board that would be perfect for you to try on the kayak wave and work up to a foamie on the green wave say the next day!
You look fantastic.. I am trying to do at t my 60s. Yesterday was my first day at bowl... Not like you..... .are there any videos about surf skate and bowl.?
The Black Tip locks both feet in with the perfect pockets. It's small and nimble, but with good width. The wheelbase is narrower than other rides for me, which makes it more nimble in transitions. And although it's shorter than a typical cruiser length I would choose, it works because the CX trucks can be ridden right on top of them, versus needing your foot to be behind them. And Carver park wheels are my favorites for the bowl out of everything I've tried.
Nice dude! I got the Yago skinny goat cx a couple months ago and I’m loving checking out skateparks in the NYC area. Something I never did before. That snake run looks amazing. Question for you. What wheels are those specifically? Size etc. I have the 69mm wheels but those look smaller. Are they better for the park?
I would not. To see why, skip to 3:10 of this video: ua-cam.com/video/GmYXQT8yU4M/v-deo.html Yes, too loose and twitchy. Doesn't mean it can't be done. Just not by me. 😂
@@SurfskateLove Thanks. makes sense, makes me wonder about my current thought to get a YOW as a complete surfskate beginner (but carver snowboarder). I had another question on your "surfskate choice" video - regarding board width - before I pull the trigger! :-)
I'm Sorry, but you're not officially "surf" skateboarding unless @least your front truck is an inverted kingpin truck! Even some sidewinders from gullwing would technically count, albeit not IKP

Wow you've really progressed! Congrats. Why did you choose this board out of all the boards you have? And how we're the carver park wheels?
The Black Tip locks both feet in with the perfect pockets. It's small and nimble, but with good width. The wheelbase is narrower than other rides for me, which makes it more nimble in transitions. WHICH WHEELS DID YOU USE. I SEE YOU TOOK OFF THE ORIGINAL ONES OFF
Hi Steve, which board do you ride here? You leave your soulboardiy in your car because she's not adapted for bowl riding? Nice vid's by the way ! :)
Carver Black Tip because it has a narrower wheelbase than the Soulboardiy, and is therefore more nimble for transition riding.
My dream os visit Venice e Ride o this park
still can’t believe that this skatepark was only built in the last couple of years.

These are Carver park wheels. 58mm 95a. I've tried several wheels in the bowl, these are my favorites.
That snake run is usually so crowded. Will go at 6:30am like you next time.
Yep, that's how you have to do it.
You better be happy with around 15 boards in the back of your car😂. The maintenance though🙈
13 on this trip, to be exact. 😂
