I remember i took a 3g stainless test for IMI Zimmerman....man did that weld metal and slag hung like a damn donkey's tail. Had to switch to 3/32 rod because it burnt better....but the downside was that the plate was 1" thick....failed bend test anyways lol

Wow thank you for teaching me one more thing. I learned how to make arc start easier from this video. You did fine start with the rod even though set up with low Current. Just stick the rod on the metal few seconds and hit it up...!!! Wow

Nice! Looking forward to that Inconel video. I work with 625 quite a bit but only tack it with tig then Orbital weld it. I really miss manual welding its so satisfying.

Yeah hi I was just wondering why you're sticking the rod to warm it is that something specific to stainless ??
Sorry if this is a really noob question

For whatever reason when you run 309L on SMAW if you just run a rod cold you get these giant pin holes you don't see till you clear the slag. I assume this is way to skip the rod oven and get any hydrogen out of it , but I'm only speculating . Like yourself I'm curious.

Is there an answer to why he is sticking it ??? Or is scottsudz speculation correct ??

I find most rods run better hot. Do you find that after starting cold scratch starts the rod suddenly starts to melt and flow well, its because the rod and workpiece have warmed up

@@renosnutzz8592 I guess the rods are not baked therefore they are full of water...

Yes any moisture on the rod will come out and you get basically a little pre heat to the rod resulting a smoother running of the rod

Can you do a 6g pipe with the 309 rod ? Flat is one thing , but 6g is an other game . I bust my test two time for my job , 2.5’’ inches carbon steel sch 160 combo test . 309l Tig root and 309l-16 stick fill and cap . The hardest section are 3 to 9 , it’s really hard to do a flat bead without flux inclusion. It’s so frustrating. Thanks

I had a hard time understanding most of the video because of the shield muffling the sound. If you look at the transcript of the video youll understand what i am talking about. The welds are fire. Crazy tight. It would be nice if there was more explanation of what your doing to be able to replicate it. Thanks for the video homie.

Nice job Mike, is it just the 309 that you preheat?? Only time I've needed to do like that was out in the field with damp rods, curious to know on what applications you use preheat for? Great video WT :)

So, I don’t normally weld thick materials. I’m not a pro. But I notice that in every video from the Pro channels, that the plates bend upward towards the welds, which is expected. How does one prevent that on real work, where the plates being welded need to lie flat? Or is this mostly an issue because these are just small coupons?

My dude, I hope you've invested in a ventilation system by now. You should not be inhailing those fumes!
You should have an extractor lined up right next to where you're going to put the bead.
