    The Davenport Guideway is a transit project I've followed since before I ran my UA-cam Channel. It's a great project, enabling high frequency electric passenger trains, better freight movement, a new greenway and the opening up of a whole community. So I got up real early this week and made a video about it - with the help of 20 friends!

    So there is the space for a second track, that will become necessary if they want to really turn this line into a regional rail service. They didn't build a viaduct for just one track to have to rebuild it later. Nice to see.

    • @tintin_999
      @tintin_999 Рік тому +25

      Yes I was going to question why there was only a single track on the viaduct as this could be very limiting on service frequency. It's a bit disappointing that the entire route is not being upgraded to double track already.

      @@tintin_999 They started by plunking down a bypass track to the east of the original, tearing out that original track, and then building the two-track guideway and bridges west of the bypass. Unfortunately, the bypass track was in the way of completing the eastern half of the approaches. Now that the guideway's west side track is connected, the bypass can be torn out, the full width of the approaches completed, and enable connection of the east side track.

    It’s honestly very impressive how much Toronto (and Ontario at large since GO Transit is arguably at the centre of this transit expansion) is improving in building more transit effectively and how massive the expansion of transit is. I’m glad that we didn’t fall into the typical Canadian trap of thinking that being the best in the continent (which I would argue Toronto was even before all this expansion) means we don’t need to improve anymore. Living close to rail infrastructure is not as bad, even if there's trains frequently passing by... It's just a couple of seconds.
    I did actually live in an apartment that was like 10 meters from an above ground section of the green line subway in Stockholm. I found the intermittent sound annoying for a week, after that I more or less didn't notice anymore....and oh yes, I lived really close to the subway stop, so I was really happy about the location.

    Previously southbound trains had to approach the Davenport diamond prepared to stop regardless of signal progression. Now they just have to slow to 45MPH before the guideway and then it is 60MPH on the guideway and then 45MPH again taking the crossover at Parkdale. This makes things significantly faster as previously, the diamond speed limit was 30MPH so the new setup is way faster. But the removal of diamond speeds up southbound trains the most and Barrie commuters should find a roughly 5min time savings going to Union which is significant.

    A lot of the level crossing removals here in Melbourne have been done using overhead rail (which we call skyrail), and while the locals sometimes resist it before it's built, there's near-universal approval once they're opened because of the gain in green space and the removal of the barrier between each side of the rail line, which you don't get when a rail-under-road trench is built.

      As an American, I am SOOOOOO jealous of Toronto's massive expansion and improvement of public transportation broadly. No other metropolitan region in North America (other than Montreal with the amazing REM system) is even close in terms of how much high-capacity rail transit is being built. I'm considering going to graduate school in Toronto rather than somewhere in the US in part because of all the amazing transit. Canada should be proud of how much transit is being built in Canadian cities (and how much more ridership Canadian transit projects receive compared to projects in the US). Where I live, in Minneapolis St Paul Minnesota, we have built 2 LRT lines and they have attracted very high ridership per kilometer for US light rail, and we are constructing a lot of arterial bus rapid transit projects, have built 2 high speed highway BRT lines, and we're about to complete this massive extension to one of our light rail lines, with other rail projects in the works, but The sheer ambitiousness of projects in Canada just completely dwarfs those of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, and I wish that wasn't the case.

    I had some involvement in this project in the past but I am still surprised how quickly it was built and how seamless it is for the everyday Barrie Line rider. This sure gives me hope that when Metrolinx and their contractor are aligned, things can be done very quickly. So glad I no longer need to occasionally wait for CP train to pass by if the train schedule on the original crossing got thrown out of whack.

    • @SkaN2412
      @SkaN2412 Рік тому

      @@magesnz alright. I don't know how long ago have you left Montreal, to be fair. FYI, ATM trains are now branded as exo and ARTM has been formed as an umbrella transit commission of the greater Montreal.
      A couple of the train lines have been half-decent (the Deux-Montagnes and Vaudreuil lines), but even they were not frequent, they only ran into the city in the morning and out the city in the evening. Barely any service on the weekends.
      The rest of the exo lines are absolute trash. 3 trains to the city in the morning, 3 trains back in the evening, no service on weekends and stat holidays. That's before the REM was even announced.
      What if you have an unusual travel pattern? Let's say, you don't work 9-5 or you live in the central Mtl, but work in the suburbs? Your best option is driving. That's not ideal at all.
      Enter the REM. They only took over one line from exo - Deux-Montagnes. The construction period is indeed painful, but already next year you will be able to go in and out of DM every 15 minutes during off-peak hours and up to every 7 minutes during rush hour. IN and OUT. Plus, they're adding rapid transit where there was none - Brossard and Baie-d'Urfe, and eventually even the airport.
      In the meantime exo and ARTM are expanding absolutely nowhere at all. The biggest move they've done is that rebranding into exo, in fact. I've literally reached out and asked them if they're planning to introduce service on weekends and they said "there's no demand". How would they know if there's demand, if there's no service? I mean, the 20 and the 40 are always congested, you wanna tell me people from RDP or PAT don't go downtown during the weekend? Ridiculous.
      STM's and exo's service is abysmal and they keep reducing it while raising rates. STM's only expansion that's allegedly being built at any point in the next decade is 5 stations on the blue line. All the while REM is commissioning the first leg of the system this spring and the remaining network next year. They will have built it within 6-7 years.
      So the way I see it, the REM is a necessary shake up that the ARTM is gonna finally get. In the last few years they've been steadily trying to blame the REM for their own failure, but they weren't being successful before the REM either. They just finally have a scapegoat. Hopefully once the REM is commissioned and is a success, the people will wake up to the fact that transit can actually be good and force these no-good execs of STM and ARTM to do their job. Or more ideally, give them all the boot and transfer all transit in the greater Montreal region to the REM team.

    Great project, despite being small, it is a good step and a good initiative for an efficient development of the infrastructure. For those from Europe like me, I in Italy, these projects show that having the ability to move with any means of transport is useful. In Liguria, an Italian region, completely mountainous and overlooking the sea, the train often saves people's journeys due to the high road traffic in the Genoa junction, also for this reason the high-speed line of the third pass is being built and improving the Genoa railway link. Seeing Toronto growing in transportation similar to Milan makes me happy, especially for a country I've always liked. In the end, the metropolitan area of Milan in inhabitants is similar to Greater Toronto, 7.6 million for Milan in less than 5,000 square kilometers and 7 million for Toronto in 7,000 square kilometers, so we need more and more infrastructure projects like this.

    Interestingly we are also using a similar technique to construct Mumbai Ahmedabad high speed rail corridore. The difference is that instead of two sets of pillars and two girders to complete a span we are making one large pillar and one large girder to cover the span. But the idea of launching is the same.
    I was amazed by the speed at which work can take place using this technique. Normally for our metro project, we already use pre cast girders but they are launched by two mobile cranes which means that work can only take place at night because cranes require space and those trucks in which girders are brought to site are also massive so they can move only at night. But then if you eliminate the trucks and use the already built viaduct to bring in new new girders suddenly work can happen 24/7.
