    I've always preferred Breams over everyone else because he can separate the main theme from the backing notes. I once played him for a friend and he refused to believe that that wasn't two guitarists playing. Other players sound cold to me.

    Hi Cameron, I just discovered your cool and very fun channel. It’s wonderful that you offer a window into your approach as an ongoing student of the instrument - and with a great sense of humor throughout! It’s inspiring in a laid-back sorta way.
    I started classical guitar study almost two years ago and have a great instructor. This is after 50 years of playing acoustic and electric. I’m having to relearn and unlearn all sorts of things. And so, I’m hanging out with “the boys” as well! And trying to be patient with myself and accept it as an “eternal” quest to improve. I’m working on mostly intermediate level stuff,
    Sor’s “Andante Largo” is ongoing, and I’m deep into my first foray into Bach - his Prelude BWV 998 - man, Bach is hard! Maybe in a few years I can crawl to tackle the Chaconne!
    Thanks for the encouragement that your channel is for students like me. Many of my days are just like yours in the video. Work on several pieces, check out a classical video or three, feeling good about my progress, thinking I suck, and so on - to the next day!
    Warm regards from Michigan and keep up the excellent playing and programming!

      Hey man! Thank you so much for the comment, it makes me very happy that you enjoy my channel! It’s really amazing to hear how long you’ve been playing, it reminds me of my favorite quote from Rachmaninoff “music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime isn’t enough for music” btw I just subscribed to your channel and I look forward to seeing more of your performances. Happy practicing😄

    As both John and Julian said, life needs as wide a variety of herbs and spices for it to thrive. It would be an extremely dull world if everyone was 'the same'. Both are supreme world-class classical guitarist virtuosos, with John excelling in technical perfection, and Julian excelling in conveying dynamic emotion. While I know it's a deliberate clickbait title, it's also a wee bit disrespectful to suggest "Julian Bream DESTROYS John Williams" - both Julian and John have, as they convey here and elsewhere, the utmost respect for each other.
    As for a preference between these two, the 'correct' answer is to prefer both, equally. However and inevitably (and boring and predictable), there will be those from the 'technical' camp who prefer John while those from the 'emotional' camp will prefer Julian.

I like how you're inviting us into your studio, world and daily life. Practicing like a champ/madman and it pays off. Thanks for sharing 🙂

      If you try to compare yourself to ANYONE, you are making a mistake! That's why mature artists eschew competitions (unless they are called to judge). Someone said that competitions are for racehorses, not musicians, and I agree! Be the absolute best that YOU can be and forget about others... each of us have our unique journey in life... some will get there sooner, some will get there later. The important thing is that you get there eventually! @@Sorhands

    Hope you don''t mind this observation but while you were practicing I noticed you changed from using a support, to using a footrest. I am sure you have a good reason for that? I'd recommend you stick with one over the other, nonetheless, I noticed that with both your right foot was raised. You might think it nothing, but I suspect that if you found a position whereby your right foot is flat on the floor you would create a base that is much more stable and that will impact every asect of your playing in postive ways. Thanks for sharing, very thoughtful video.
    I was watching (at home) when John Williams played Cavatina when that show was first aired ;) I guess I was like 11 or 12.

    • @Sorhands
      @Sorhands  7 місяців тому +2

      Not at all! I appreciate the observation. Yeah the right foot thing is definitely a habit, it’s probably just tension that I need to learn how to deal with. And as for the footrests and supports, I’ve gone through pretty much all of them and I’ve found that the pillow works for me, but my favorite by far is the stool on its own. It’s a balance between stability and back pain😂

    I'm firmly in the Bream camp. I have actually seen John Williams play Concierto de Aranjuez live. Paid for good seats too.
    He must've been a bit off that night because I enjoyed the second billed Schuberts Unfinished Symphony far more. I felt a bit ripped off TBH.
    I could guarantee if Julian Bream was playing I wouldn't have felt like that.
    Around that time, I saw a local guitar teacher bumble his way through Vivaldi guitar concertos with a chamber orchestra one Sunday afternoon. He was under a lot of pressure believe me, and everyone wanted him to triumph. The mood was friggen excellent - a bit like this vid actually. He got a standing ovation and encore after encore. It was so much fun. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed his Los Romeros tribute far more than Williams' mechanical passionless dare I say mediocrity infused performance the night I saw him. I got this feeling he would've been happier having a game of pool and a pint at the pub than performing for us.
    He went down in my estimations. It costs a lot of money for good seats like +$400 for the two of us and yeah, you know... what else can I say?
    Oh I almost forgot to mention, I'd be happy to never hear effing Cavatina ever again LOL.

    Which camp? Bream is about 1000% "better" than J. Williams, who plays like a machine, and all the negatives about musical phrasing and interpretation that that implies. Bream plays with feeling and is highly emotive. J. Williams...never.

    • @bd1845
      @bd1845 7 місяців тому

      That’s your opinion only not a fact. As a pure guitarist and actually a whole musician Williams far more accomplished. I remember the great Paco Pena once said a lot of guitarists ‘take liberties with rhythm when expressing themselves’ something I found both Segovia and Bream did. Williams becuase of his cast iron technique is accused of being cold because why? He rarely made a mistake? Bream never attempted any Barrios one of the most important in the guitar repertoire.
      Would listen to that all day than the Royal Winter Music… brilliant and beautiful guitarist though Bream was. Williams’ interpretation of the Bach Chaconne is one of the most powerful musical expressions you are likely to hear… Bream’s does not get close.

      @@TheBlueCream all depends on what your interpretation of emotional is? Pulling a silly face when you play or making a cup of tea between phrases to slow the music down when it isn’t written maybe? Williams doesn’t allow his own emotion in when he plays. He doesn’t need to.. the relatively simple piece of cavatina… you remember the film for the powerful emotion it evokes and just listen to the sweet clear guitar playing.
