    The reason there isn't any steering feel, (around 14:30 in the video) is in old cars and trucks (at least in the US) the steering column shaft is connected to the steering box input shaft with what is called a Rag Joint or a flexure bearing. It's a disc of fabric reinforced rubber that is sandwiched between either two metal plates or just bolted together. Super sketchy, but sort of necessary for really bumpy roads of the time. If you just had a solid universal joint in the steering shaft going over roads, such as those, in old cars it would basically be uncontrollable. The steering wheel would be ripped from your hands because of having no power steering and such. The Rag Joint soaks up unwanted steering input caused by the road surface, at the cost of steering feel and performance. I hope someone learned something new today.

      Thanks for the info. I think the devs should include such information in the game, at the loading screens for example. However there is really a lack of fidelity in the FFB for all cars in beam. I also notice there is allot of noise in the steering position, yes you could filter it out, but the more you filter it the worst it gets in terms of speed and fidelity.

    Some Camera based tips/thoughts for you Jimmy:
    • You can change the FOV of any camera using the numpad '9' & '3' keys (cardinal numpad keys rotate camera and centre it etc)
    • You _may_ like the bonnet camera view that most cars have. It has the exterior sounds, and imo the camera motion feels nicer than the interior camera does on many cars.
    • If the interior camera wobble is an issue for you, I _think_ there is a slider somewhere in the options to adjust how much wobble there is.
    All of the above said, the camera's in BeamNG are what they are. So the above things still might not help you out.

    • @SockyNoob
      @SockyNoob 5 років тому +3

      The FOV slider is especially useful on Automation cars that don't save interior FOV angles.

      Yea stock setups on all cars except the ETK's are basically trash and just generic values. Cars can handle MUCH better than they do stock. Also, FFB has to be tuned as well, on stock settings it sucks, when set up properly it's more detailed than a lot of sims out there.

      All of the above. Took me ages (2013-2019 tbh) to get the FFB set up just right, ofcourse they did some major changes a while back that changed things a fair bit. Ive setup my own rally cars and theyre a ton of fun, the stock setups are really lacking alot.

    i think the thing about the ffb in beam is that it tries to be 100% realistic, whereas actual sims give you extra information, more than you'd get in real life, to make up for not being able to feel g forces. you'd probably get good usable feedback in beam with low profile sticky tires on tarmac, but the tall soft bois, especially on gravel, arent gonna give you anything but a little bit of self centering force.

    • @Sithhy
      @Sithhy 5 років тому

      Literally this. All the steering parts are simulated in BeamNG, so if you have tall & thick tires, combined with a crappy steering rack, then the FFB forces won't be strong, where as other racing games tell you everything right from the wheels

    • @SilentClouds
      @SilentClouds 4 роки тому

      I don't think this is the case. In other games you could turn off all of these effects individually and the feel of the FFB would still be much better than in beam. I think there is a lack of fidelity in the beamng FFB caused by the high amount of noise in the steering position.

      @getsideways7257 5 років тому +1

      I also can't get it why people keep taking it for an arcade (while crashing all the time because of not taking it seriously). Probably the most realistic car sim in my personal opinion.

    • @BigCool95
      @BigCool95 5 років тому

      Get Sideways yeah me too, i mean its a lot of fun blowing cars apart, but it also is a very realistic sim. When you miss a shift the gear will grind hard, and doing that too much can cause you to lose that gear. The breaks overheat, the cars can overheat, they can be over revved and engine damage can occur. The only problem i have with beamng is the cars feel to skittish. They bounce around a lot and skate around. They seem very jittery if that makes sense.

    • @getsideways7257
      @getsideways7257 5 років тому +2

      @@BigCool95 I personally don't care for the crash modeling, though it does feel more immersive to get the car totaled when you hit that tree. I drive it for how it handles. But you have a point that cars could be a little less snappy. Still, as long as drifting makes sense, I'm ok with that.
      One more thing about the modeling: you can also starve the engine of oil if the car is rolled over. It's also possible to blow up the engine (which almost gave me a heart attack when it happened for the first time). Then there is also the brakes heating and fading. So I really think this is probably the most detailed car sim out there. Even the automatic transmission has quite a modeling behind it. Usually you don't have to do a thing, but in BeamNG you still need to switch between the modes.

    I know I'm a bit late, but I have to say this.
    BeamNG's FFB is bit different than in other games. In other games, the FFB is taken directly from the tires & amplified some more to higher levels than in real life, while in BeamNG it goes through the tires, to the rim, from the rim to the steering rack & *then* to your steering wheel. The strength also depends on the tires you run, mainly how thick they are; the thicker, the more dampened the forces are thus less FFB makes it to your steering wheel.

  • @excrubulent
    @excrubulent 5 років тому

    Hey Jimmer if you roll the car the game still lets you push it onto its wheels so you don't need to restart. Hold CTRL then click on an attachment point and you can drag the car around. This works in races and scenarios.

    Considering the amount of power the new gen of consoles will have, I'd love to see them try out some soft body physics on a Dirt or WRC10 or something.
    Like, I'd fucking love this kinda of damage in WRC8.

    There is (or was, haven't played the game for a while) an option to enable the node-grabber during scenarios so you can recover from rolls.
    Also I prefer the chase cam as it gives a better view of the CRONCH.

    Hi personally I love this game I am not afraid to admit that for me it is the best driving simulator in the world I really enjoy playing with it to the point that I have built real rally championships with a lot of stages so many car teams and standings, I'd recommend play with it a lot more because it's really beautiful.

      @@formulajuan5762 Maybe the creator mixed those two. After all it's not an official model. Just by popularity though I'd say it was intended to be a C10 Skyline

    Beam seems to crunch on heel toe randomly even though you're not actually registering damage or doing anything wrong. I think it wants a 100% pedal position on the clutch or something or else it triggers the sound on a gear shift, but a 95%ish pedal position would be low enough to trigger damage, if you get what I mean.

    I'm thinking since direct drive support is new in Beam that it doesn't quite work properly. On normal wheels it's not amazing, but it does the job well enough.
    Either that or you still don't have it set up right. You could talk to the devs, they're usually pretty willing to help.

    In my opinion, once Beam improves its tires, sounds, and sense of speed, it'll become, possibly, the greatest sim ever

    • @arwinartwell
      @arwinartwell 5 років тому +1

      They are always improving their tire model and sounds. Their tire model is completely different from any other game so it takes time.
      Post explaining Beamng's tire model : www.beamng.com/threads/guys-come-to-talk-about-tires.58720/page-2#post-949560

      Oh, I understand and respect their tire modal completely, it's incredible! I more meant in how it feels to play, all the cars feel floaty, like the tires are not properly weighed down

    • @arwinartwell
      @arwinartwell 5 років тому

      @@Billiamiscool Sounds like that has to do with ffb, or just how the game looks? Everything is the proper weight in beamng, gravity is proper. There is always room for improvement and the devs will keep pushing forward.
