  • The Bell X-1, is a rocket-engine-powered aircraft, designated originally as the XS-1, and was a joint National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics-U.S. Army Air Forces-U.S. Air Force supersonic research project built by Bell Aircraft. Conceived during 1944 and designed and built in 1945, it achieved a speed of nearly 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h; 870 kn) in 1948. A derivative of this same design, the Bell X-1A, having greater fuel capacity and hence longer rocket burning time, exceeded 1,600 miles per hour (2,600 km/h; 1,400 kn) in 1954. The X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager, was the first crewed airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight and was the first of the X-planes, a series of American experimental rocket planes (and non-rocket planes) designed for testing new technologies.

The narration is a little misleading. At the 5:20 mark, a comment about using an all moving elevator is accurate. It is necessary for stable mach flight. However, at the 19:11 mark, the record breaking flight shows a typical fixed elevator with moving trailing edge. Because of the typical elevator, the flight controls were used as Yeager mentioned, up and down to produce a somewhat controlled level flight. After the record breaking flight, the planes elevators were changed to the all moving elevators now seen on all supersonic aircraft. In fact, that is the way to distinguish between subsonic and supersonic design, not whether the wings are swept or not.

I would have just loved to see Bob Hoover fly his Shrike Commander in person. Its phenomenal to see on video so in person I can't imagine. Those old pilots had something special.

Should be the BRITISH Bell X-1 . The aerodynamics are lifted from the Miles M52.

Never in the history of aviation has there been so much discussion about an aircraft that never existed.
The Miles M.52 is pure British science fiction... no such aircraft ever flew or was ever constructed... the M.52 never existed

@@sandervanderkammen9230 While a full sized operational aircraft was not built the work on such an aircraft WAS 90% complete and much of the work including the flying tail was used by Bell. Unmanned models of the craft proved the concept viable.

@tjm3900 That's a completely false statement made by Dennis Bancroft who was indicted by the Crown court after Miles Aircraft was charged with 24 counts of fraud and embezzlement.
When the M.52 scandal broke Ministry auditors raided Miles Aircraft and found no trace of either prototype aircraft or the money paid to build them.
Only incomplete drawings and a partially constructed wooden mock-up of the cockpit section was found.
Bancroft also made false claims that data was given to the Americans but no evidence has ever been found to substantiate his claims.
Bell used a nearly exact copy of the Messerschmitt Me-262s fly-by-wire Horizontal Stabilator system which was found by the Von Kámán Mission.
Theodore von Kármán who was Jack Ridley's professor at CalTech.
Jack Ridley was the engineer at Bell on the X-1 program and installed the Me-262s Electric Fly-by-wire Horizontal Stabilator on the X-1.
History has shown that the M.52 could never reach Mach 1, no aircraft powered by an obsolete centrifugal jet engine has ever reached Mach 1 in level flight.

The starting point was data from the British from the Mile M.52. Sharing data with the Americas was the biggest mistake because they will never share it back.

Please stop spreading lies and false information about the Bell X1.
The Miles M.52 never existed and there is absolutely no evidence to support the myth that any useful information was given to the X1 project by Britian or Miles Aircraft.
