    I’ve also had one for years, and used it not only for programming, but also for testing loco and accessory decoders. I also for a short while, whilst my main command station was out, used it to control my small layout. I’d also say their service in the UK is excellent.

    I've been using the Sprog III for several years now for my programming track. In this use, I've been very satisfied. I decided the current limit was insufficient to run my N scale layout and went with another solution for that. I chose the Sprog III because it was known to be compatible with the sometimes fickle JMRI, specifically DecoderPro.

    Dear Larry, amazing simplicity. Great vid, as always thorough explanation! One thought I would like to add, with devices like these, the user friendliness of DCC systems will significantly improve. Hopefully that will also reflect onto the available more elaborate DCC systems.

    Hi Larry, I've had one of these for years but I've only used it in conjunction with Decoder Pro for programming, never used it in command station mode. But its great on the workbench as it takes up very little room. I might think about getting a booster and using it in command station mode at some point.

      I think a lot of folks got these for programming decoders because that is what they were promoted as. I noticed that on the Streamlined Backshop website they still refer to them as DCC programmers.

    I was seriously considering the Sprog 4, but the Raspberry Pi shortage intervened. About the same time DCC++EX came to my attention. Even though it's DIY the EX version seemed pretty simple. I have purchased the parts and begun assembly. DCC-EX doesn't require a computer and at less than half the price of Sprog 3 this doesn't feel like I've taken much of a risk trying a DIY project.

    Whoa! The USB "B" (the square one) is old. I am lucky to have a few around if I decide to use this system. It is not easy to find those connectors anymore.

    Very interested to hear initial thoughts on Hornby's HM7000 decoders.

    👍👍👍Great video Larry! Would you recommend it for someone starting the hoppy

      I would recommend it as a possible option since it could serve both as a programmer for now and later as well as a command station and booster for a small layout. But it does require the use of DecoderPro and an iOS or Android device with the correct app for use as a throttle. So you need to be willing and computer savvy enough to do that. Go to their website and download the instructions and make sure you are ready for doing those things.

    So Larry, The only reason one would want the Sprog 3 system that comes with the Raspberry PI, is if they didn't have/want to hook the Sprog unit up to their computer, right? If you buy the system with the Raspberry, then you don't have to hook it to your computer for any reason because the PI is doing all the work through the decoder pro and wifi ? Thanks so much!! Another great video.

      Yes, as I understand it the Raspberry Pi has the operating system and DecoderPro built into it along with a wireless wifi transceiver. So when powered up it sets up DecoderPro with the Withrottle app running a d all you have to do is turn on your iPhone or other wireless throttle and run trains. I suspect there is more to setting it up initially so the best thing to do is go to the sprog.us.com website, read their description, download the manual and see what more might be involved.

    Hi Larry. I notice that you (sometimes) use Digitrax equipment. My command station is the Digitrax DCS210+ (a component of the EVOX Evolution Express Advanced 5A/8A Starter Set). I did buy the Sprog II unit to make programming my DCC locos more efficient and easier to use; was this a necessary/good move?

      When I got the Sprog 3 it was at a time when decoder makers were implementing indexed CVs and that was causing a lot of problems. So I got the Sprog as it seemed to be able to do the job reliably. Since then the makers of DCC equipment have made some changes in their equipment and the DecoderPro programmers have finessed their programs and most DCC decoders can be reliably programmed. However I still keep my Sprog connected to my computer and use it for initial programming then use my Digitrax for POM and later refinements.

      JMRI is still trying to decide whether it fully supports the DCS 210+. I also use the EVOXD as my layout DCC system.

    Hi Larry I need some help. It's off topic but here goes. I have an NCE Procab , power panel and the wallwart. If I put a 6 wire flat cable into it will it act like a Prower Cab and power my track. I'm trying to avoid buying a Powercab starter system. Your help would be great, thanks.

    • @scotabot7826
      @scotabot7826 Рік тому

      I don't think so, because the Command Station part of the Power Cab is built into the actual throttle itself. There is not a built in command station in the Pro Cab throttles. With what you have now, your going to have to buy a command station.

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  Рік тому

      Scotabot is correct, the ProCab throttle by itself is just a dumb throttle so you need a command station and booster to do the real thinking and powering for you.
