In this episode Martin recounts stories from folk traditions that tell us something of the conditions of what creates a storyteller. He claims a teller is a scarecrow of words: someone that dwells between the wild darkness and the hearth fire, understanding the job of translation that goes on between them.

As one claiming to be a very fledgling storyteller; one who, this very evening, will for the first time share a story at his local Devon pub - at the inaugural storytelling night he has set up there; I give thanks to you, Martin. For this message on UA-cam and for all the written and spoken messages you have offered up over the years. And I give my thanks on to those you gave and give thanks to for the stories, the mentorship, the inspiration.

I feel deeply connected to this story, a story which played my heart like a string in a symphony - it breathing me and I breathing her. It was shared with me by my uncle, in early childhood here in Iceland, bringing into being new nuances of emotions and imaginations. Today - whenever I have an encounter with a seal - I will kneel down and sing a song to them, they seem to listen, move closer - in stillness, looking into me. Thank you for your presence Martin - it moves beyond the virtual.

I don’t think I’ve been captivated so much by a story in a long while. I came from the “hinge dweller” short, as a reluctant storyteller, unable to see the strength in my words, this was a great encouragement.

So beautiful! The light and shadows, the flicker of flames, the stories and sharing of thoughts; your Camelot forest with standing stones, I thoroughly enjoy this. Thank you so much.

Tonight says I will sit and think of my mother, a land-locked selkie of a sort, who had a skin or two stolen away in her time and if it might have been different. Thank you so much for telling the story as only you can. As one of the countless storytellers that will be drawn to this fire, I take up my post between the night and the day and the then and the might be so and listen in.

How perfectly marvelous that you have created this channel Martin - right when I have taken a position as an English teacher to junior high students! Oh, I will find a way to work this in to the curriculum and discussion!!!! ❤

Reminds me so much of your telling of the Hunter and the Foxwoman Martin. So beautiful. Stories certainly talk to each other!

This story somewhat scared me, as beautiful as it was.
The sealskin almost like a mirror that we end up hiding, trapping others in the moments just before we hide it away.
I hope i could have the courage to take the mirror out and dance with my wife before i wreaked havoc on others in my stagnation.
I shall contribute to this channel, this changed me a little bit.

Awww such good for the heart and soul... I cried not knowing why but so very moved ... your stories reach that part that is so hungry and famished but I have gotten so used to meagerness. You are a blessing. Thank you thank you deep deep gratitude 🪷🌸♥️

For storyteller to recount more than the events, but weave the foundation of our humanity In the telling, bring the heart nowhere else, but to dwell in mystery

Feeling like the darkened, mysterious cave that resides beneath my sternum is alight and burning from that story! Very much looking forward to listening to you speak in Glaway next week.
P.S. There's a stand of trees by the river at the bottom of our garden where my son swears the salmon of knowledge lives!

Thank you for telling me my story. I've always felt as though I lived on a threshold between the endless night sky and a hot cup of tea by the fire. The longing would be unbearable if God wasn't there with me in both.

I grew up with one foot in the wilderness and the other at the edge of civilization-a wild soul trapped in a domesticated body. This story resonates with me.

Good morning from Surrey BC Martin…we have a little snow and cold at the moment, it has quieted everything. I’ve just begun Courting the Wild Twin and an awakening set to a droning kind of sound seems to be percolating. I hope you will come back to BC soon. Until then travel safe but not too safe my friend.

I dreamt of you last night. You were living in a tree in the middle of a wood and the path to reach you was long and winding. Treacherous with steep slopes.
When I found you, you looked down on me from the tree as I lay on my back underneath in the soil. I told you that I was sorry, that I loved you and wanted you to come home.
You had two young women with you who were supposed to clean but had let dust pile up in the corners.
You had become old and shrunken and your teeth were loose in your mouth. With a dog who's legs were on backwards and a guitar with loose strings and the neck the wrong way round, so that only you could play it.
You agreed to return and announced a party. But everyone had to wear black. Hundreds came on bikes and in cars. And even the blond haired dyed their hair black.
    Glad you find you here
