      Was a movie collector. Now selling all i have before moving to my retirement place in the philippines. I find collecting a terrible material mentality. Especially now where it's not about finding things but just browing ebay and buying.

    I never stopped collecting physical media. Books, comics, music, movies, and TV shows are all things I collect physical media for. Especially if I'm able to go to Value Village and pick up some great DVD and VHS finds. I'm glad you mentioned Big Shiny Tunes, because I love those albums. I have Big Shiny Tunes 3 to 8 on CD. Much Dance is another Canada exclusive music series that I enjoy on CD as well. Same with the Now! series.

      @@NerdCrave My dad has Now! 3, and I have Now! 7, Now! 11, and Now! 12. So definitely more 2000's music, all of which were on the radio when I was in high school and my year off between high school and college. Big Shiny Tunes 4 is my favourite of all three series of albums. My dad had it on audiotape, and he always played it in the car when he drove me to a summer day camp I went to in my early teens. I eventually got it on CD, but being in the car with my dad, listening to it on audiotape was awesome.

I mean, sure, you can find the songs on iTunes or Spotify from the digital versions of the albums the artists originally recorded them for, but those particular collections? With those particular versions of those songs, as some of them are remixes or special versions not on any other album? Not a chance.

    My thing is definitely gaming and I dont like to buy digital only content normally for a variety of reasons. I never really stopped buying physical games or even questioned transitioning away from it as the tangibility of the product means a lot to me. Also, digital only content is worth absolutely nothing monetarily which is a serious problem because it takes money to get or get access to media, so coming out with nothing of note other than a file isnt good since I cant make any decisions with that file other than to delete it or re-download it.
    A lot of folks spend a lot of money on gaming and other digital content and don't realize or think about how little official worth it has. Theres a lot else to say but I really liked this top 10. Excellent points made all through it and important for everyone to remember. Thanks NC!

    I recently brought out my CD collection because of nostalgia and I’m tired of streaming. I must correct you regarding Spotify and Apple Music, neither have used mp3 codec. Spotify uses Ogg Vorbis and Apple uses AAC and Alac (for its lossless option).

    • @NerdCrave
      @NerdCrave  2 місяці тому

      Thank you for the correction but it’s not really important. What format they use most streaming services have a high-quality option and the quality is fairly good if not in excess of CD quality at times, however because it’s being streamed over the Internet, generally the quality is not as great as it could be, there’s gotta be some kind of compression or something going on because your average UA-cam video does not sound as good as a CD

    • @gavinhardy75
      @gavinhardy75 2 місяці тому

      @@NerdCrave UA-cam certainly compresses audio by default. Yet broadband internet is more than sufficient to stream 1.4 mbps (cd quality) and 9.2 mbps (hi res) without data compression from Apple, Qobuz, Amazon HD and Tidal.
      Data streaming via cellular internet when outside the house may struggle with hi res.

    • @NerdCrave
      @NerdCrave  2 місяці тому +1

      @@gavinhardy75 cellular Internet streaming is the number one use case for streaming audio, and to be clear, I find the quality of streaming audio to be perfectly acceptable. It really becomes more of a divide when you compare streaming video which claims to be in 4K versus actual 4K on an ultra Blu-ray.

    Hmm, honestly, I really just prefer "obtaining" everything and throwing it on a big ole hard drive lol. Price of a VPN and a couple 8+ TB hard drives is gonna win out every time. Can even add a seedbox in there for slightly more $. And you don't use up any space irl. If you like going out and buying this stuff that's cool though. It's an interesting hobby.

    • @NerdCrave

      i do that as well. i have a plex server feeding me 20+ TB of obtained files lol

    • @iiqulo
      @iiqulo 4 місяці тому +1

      The problem with obtaining everything is that little of it has value or is special. At that point it is all disposable.
      I say this not even from a physical vs digital angle. I have too many physical pieces of media. At some unseen point, it all becomes too much.
      But, I also have to talk about the physical cs digital angle. There is more to the experience of media than just the core content itself. From going out and buying it, to opening the package, to looking at the artwork. Handling the disc/cassette/cartridge.
      Touch is a very important aspect for human interaction. That is why car dealerships want you to test drive the cars. Once you've touched it, it creates a feeling of ownership that makes one much more willing to buy.
      Clicking on a list will never create that form of attachment. Though there is the argument that maybe we should be less attached to our entertainment. Who knows?

  •  4 місяці тому

    I do think there will eventually be a future for physical when something more efficient comes... I personally think there should be a VHS2 that's like a 1TB thumb drive, but is actually not considered piracy to play movies off of.

    Why would you collect physical media when you can just as easily download onto HDD and make one or more backups that take up no space at all? The physical space, the dust, the need to inventory, the chance of losing your collection if you have a flood, fire or other disaster. What if you have to move, what if you have to move quickly as in SHTF.
