Russians Captured a Leopard 2A6. What Can They Learn From It ??

- After getting so close to capturing one, over and over again, Russians actually managed to capture one Leopard 2 tank, more than a year after they'd been delivered to Ukraine, and not just any Leopard 2, but the Leopard 2A6, one of the most advanced Main Battle Tanks out there.

Outro: "face away" - svard
The probable reason why the Russian guy mistook the tank for Leopard 2A5 is because the markings inside the hull of Leopard 2A6 tanks still retain Leopard 2A5 labels after the 2A6 upgrade. I was not aware of this, but a friend of mine, Tobias, who used to serve on a Leopard 2A6 in Bundeswehr, pointed this out to me. Picture of the label inside a random Leopard 2A6: imgur.com/a/O25Eu9I

The Russians captured an engineering mine clearing vehicle M1150 ABV based on the Abrams, near Berdychi. The video of this is at night. The rear of the vehicle is burned but the front and middle section appear to be in good condition.

Being a German Bundeswehr Veteran of the 23rd Gebirgsjägerbrigade with a whole Family of German Veterans including Eastern Front WW2, i find it hilarious that there are People who thought that if you send any Western Tanks to Ukraine that none of them would be captured and studied. The same Thing happened in all the Wars. The Soviet Russians captured Tiger Tanks, Panzer 3s, Stugs etc. thats just part of War. And we Germans captured all the Soviet Russian Tanks as well and studied them.
It's weird to especially see so many Western Journalists be so surprised by this happening. This is just whats gonna happen either way and every Military knows this will happen.

So, it's unlikely to provide anything truly useful, but it does have some minor parts that could be interesting to Russia, like the easy maintenance setup, as the Leo2 engineers spent a LOT of effort on those, and it might be a viable improvement to Russian tanks, depending on if it fits their logistics chain of course. Far too complicated for a mere Russian
Low-sensitive inert explosives in shells are not used in Russian tanks, since they are many times more expensive than conventional explosives, they are worse in cumulative shells, and the bulk of the shells in Russian tanks come from warehouses from Soviet times, when inert shells were not produced. In any case, the shells in Soviet tanks are open without metallic casings (just like the automatic loader itself is not protected by armor, at least from the crew), and simply the ignition of gunpowder is inevitable and also destroys the tank irrevocably. The use of low-sensitive explosives in shells is expensive, reduces the effectiveness of explosives by one and a half times, reduces the armor penetration of shaped charges, which is not high anyway, and will not provide sufficient protection without other measures - increasing armor, maintaining armor protection for the ammunition from the crew, separating powder charges from explosives , creating knockout panels to allow the gunpowder flame to escape or throwing a burning container of gunpowder out of the tank. Inert explosives have been known for a long time, they are weaker, and they do not protect against damage from cumulative jets or other very harsh shaking - but can only withstand a small fire or impact from fragments - which is not now the main means of destruction - from cumulative jets
Hopfully the russian goverment will relase offical documentation about what they learned on the gijian forums so leo in WT can be %100 accurate 🙏
I don´t think Russia will copy the propellant.
The reason is that its quite a bit more expensive to produce, and Russia does use more ammo in general making that to costly. It would not surprise me if Russia already had the ability to produce those propellant, but lacked the capacity.
Anyone who thinks that this will lead to advances in RU weapons forgets that russia fundamentally lacks the manufacturing abilities needed to manufacture the sensors/chips/chemicals needed

Tukish 2a4 : Y-ye-yeah ha-haha 😅
Capturing the tank means nothing if you can't afford to implement the features. Just like you said with the hydraulics, they didn't implement due to cost.
I don't think it will take a "miracle" for a nation which produces more tanks in one month than the entire US and Western Europe takes to produce in one year, to figure out how to make two replacement tracks to get ready for display at Victory Day 2024. More than likely, one of their off the shelf tracks will end up working just fine with almost no modifications.
"a nation which produces more tanks in one month than the entire US and Western Europe takes to produce in one year"
Keep in mind that USA kept producing a single tank per month long after the army said they didn't need any more tanks, just to keep the factory open. That's been the biggest problem in ramping up production, with no substantial orders for three decades, a lot of military industry either got bought up or went out of business.
As for Russia pumping out tanks, I'd say it is a bit of cheating counting those restored Soviet surplus tanks the same as newly produced tanks. Once those relics are gone (should take two to three years at current pace) the production rates will no longer be in favour of Russia.
Yet the west with it’s pathetic arms production and Ukrainians wish for slightly more control of their futures was the problem.
What can they learn? Very little. Most of the tech is over 30 years old. And what they can learn won't help them because their doctrine of design is entirely different.

That they are no use anymore on the front lines
They can learn how to make a TANK not a flying frying pan.😊
Thank you, Germany!
Hi RedEffect.
Could you make a video about the T-64 and T-80UD in Russian service before this war and in it. In general it seems that these tanks were removed from service because of parts supply issues, because the factory of these tanks is in Ukraine. But I have read that the LPR and DPR had at the maximum around 400 T-64's, in addition there were videos of T-64's being removed from fields and put on trains, in Russia.
About the T-80UD, as far as I know, the tank wasn't confirmed to be present on the front line on the Russian side, but there were claims that they were removing them storage. In addition there is a video, in which was claimed and showed that T-80UD's specifically, were being moved by train.
I wasn't able to find more information about them.
What can the Russians learn from this capture? Probably not much since the tank doesn't have a toilet or a washing machine...
You don't understand, the Russians are catching animals for the zoo again.
they just captured an abrams a couple of hours ago. and no, im not talking about the m1150 abv, but the real one with 120mm gun. saw the video of it being dragged by 2 brem-1s in a couple of russian telegram channels
jipp, a completely burned out hunk oif scrap metal in the shape of an M1A1 Abrams.
Much worse condition than the Leopard 2A6
If ony oryx would count Soviet Tanks in that condition on Ukranian soil, Ukrain would have the largest tank army in the world.
I love how this tank is over 25 years old and still significantly more advanced than any tank Russia is using on the battlefield today.
I love how the t72 is 57 years old and is still a threat to nato tanks.
@@kaiserwihelmvonfluff1000 even a pak 40 can probably threaten a leo
@@cideltacommand7169 i mean it definitely would be a threat to the tracks especially. people seem to think a giant explosion is necessary to technically kill a tank or afv
@@decreatious4520 No, I mean full on side penetrarion by an aphe
I love how this tank is 25 years old and still significantly more advanced than 95% of Nato tanks. The only 2 tanks which are more advanced are the newest abrams and the Leo2A7.
If they learn a lot form that tank then they should realize just how far behind they are.
Good video RedEffect, keep em coming
nafo: the tank wasn't of any significance
You guys are giving them too much attention 🤣

@@scpgaming-452it's not like russia isn't sending out constant game changers that fail or aren't used correctly. Ukraine has 15 himars and they still 2 years later are offing Russians. Can you do a video about ruzzian air defense and why even after almost 3 years it still can't intercept himars, drones and even huge drones? Why can Ukraine fly small passenger sized drones freely over 1,000 km into ruzzia and the only thing they shoot down are their own planes? Is it just that bad... seems like it
The Russian Tank Design School is one of the most advanced in the world. Russians can't learn much from Germans.
The only thing that is remotely valuable is the armor package and the ammo, I believe in one of the photos it show dm63. One of the best projectiles nato has. Probably the Russians will try to make something better then 3bm59 if they want to afford it.
They could do some reverse engineering stuff to get those inert (I think this is how it's called) gunpowder, which could be very useful.
@@ArielK-a it would be probably to expensive to do, otherwise they would have probably done it already
A modern German tank that still looks like Cold War Era Tech inside.
Even modern Abrams have cold war era tech on them
canister shot???? damn
I'm German, pro Ukr and still I'm neither surprised nor worried.
There was a good chance that this would happen and everyone knew it.
Of course Ru will make a huge deal out of it, but even someone like me thinks that the Leopard 2A6 contains nothing that Ru doesn't already know.
However knowing doesn't mean being able or probably more importantly willing to mass produce it.
Ru simply has a different kind of MBT doctrine where crew survivability is not more important than overall cost effectiveness as well as ease of manufacturing.

I like how when Turkiye lost leopard 2a4 people made fun of them saying they used bad tactics and stuff but when Ukraine loses and gets a leopard 2a6(which is much better than 2a4 which turkey had) captured people are saying: no tank is indestructible
The Ukrainian Army has bad tactics too. It's a conscript army at this point just like Russia and in no way comparable to NATO standards. Ukrainians get trained for 3 months in NATO countries, NATO soldier training takes between 6 (US) to 9 months (Germany).
@@jonny2954
No, they don't assign tank crew tasks to the recently mobilized guys with 2 months of training, on the other hand the Ukrainian infantry is currently made up of recruits without any prior military service. But this is because majority of the professional and other well trained Ukrainian troops are out of action.
Again, no - the Russian army isn't made up of conscripts, it's made up of volunteer contractors who have already served the army and then undergo further military training before being sent to action.
The armour is a derivative of that fitted to British and US mbts. I suspect they will be very interested in that.
now Russia can learn what a reverse gear is and gun depression.
I think the Leo has a higher value for there Propaganda than Research, especaly seeing comments here
Yep. They will probably repair it and bring it to the Kubinka Tank Museum as another trophy for people to see.
@@Langermar maybe later it will defently be the crown jewl of this years parade and after that it will be in kubinka or the russian Army park or what ever that place is called
Good, maybe, after billions of rubles and hard work, the russians can learn how to build a tank that doesnt kill its occupants. Lets remind everyone, that crew survivability on a T72 is just 20 percent when penetrated. Crew survivability on a Leo 2A6 is over 90 percent
you act like ruskie lives matter to the kremlin
Slava Russia! Uraaaaaa❤❤❤
Youre joking right? they are terrorists
Finally the Russian engineers are getting a glimpse of what 21st century vehicles look like. They’ve been stuck in the past for too long
They’ve been designing up to date tanks for decades you just don’t want to recognize it. A T-72 with upgraded armor is equally protected to half of NATO,s tanks at a fraction of the cost, they have an autoloader which even American figured was to complex too try to put in all their tanks, and they all have thermals and all sorts of other systems. And that’s just the t-72 their oldest tank model
@@nicnac921 I mean the t-72 and its variants like the t-90 are still based around a faulty design doctrine that Russia has been wanting to step away from for years now, but they just don’t have the budget to make something completely new
@@GigaCat055 they do have the budget but they choose not to change to anything different which I know you think is a bad idea but it is arguably been proving better than what the west would have done with their tanks in Ukraine. Unless you have perfect conditions western doctrine for tanks really doesn’t work in war which Ukraine definitely isn’t perfect
The most important thing they will learn is that most advanced NATO tanks use canister shot from Napoleon era.
So they will probably copy that - it is a lost technology for Russia.
Cool story bro

I know it has nothing to do with this video, but there has been a WT leak that includes info suggesting the t-80ue1 will be added to the game. I was able to find out that the thermal sight it uses is called the Plisa sight.
I was unable to find out if its a gen 1 or gen 2 thermal. Could you make a video about thermal sights and what generation thermals have what capabilities?
