AHHH thank you for including me in this!! 😭my heart. The Guide's cover is so so so good, but I absolutely agree it is RIDICULOUS and there's just..........so much fishing hahaha
I just found out it's actually a loose sequel/spinoff to another of his books! Have you also read The River?? I might actually go back for his fishing origin story 🤭
@@BooksandLala I haven't read The River but I just read the synopsis and honestly....👀 i might have to join you in giving that one a try because i have been dying for more adventurous books these days!
The River is miles better than The Guide. Gorgeous writing and the plot is actually grounded in reality. I am a big outdoors peeson and i have yet to find any contemporary writer that immerses the reader in nature the way Peter Heller does in The River. It's a great book if you want an escape from suburban/urban life and want to know what it feels like to paddle down a river. It's not without its issues but overall i do think it is worth the reading experience if you're looking for a beautifully written adventure thriller that may just entice you to take up canoeing.
When I tell you I was STRESSED at the start of this video !!! *Spoilers* I'm so glad you loved KAIKEYI ❤️❤️ Always happy to see another person pick it up 🥰 I was also wrecked by that death scene 😭
Ahhh I love the concept of this vlog so much and I’m so honored to be included in this 😍 I’m so glad you enjoyed We Need to do Something, that book is wild! I’m also so excited to see you read more Christina Lauren in the future, Unhoneymooners and Josh and Hazels Guide are two of my top favorite romances 😍
Laughing about people not reading books they are recommending. I am more frustrated by the booktubers I follow who rarely review books! 10 videos of unboxing and hails for every 1 review video!! Hope you enjoy these recs.
I literally unsubscribed from so many channels who do book hauls all the time but never seem to read any of it. It's basically another way to drive consumerism and encourage others to spend. This is why I like discovering smaller channels (and I really appreciate Kayla featuring those in her videos) because they seem more about the reading and less about collecting.
I've heard reading vlogs and hauls get the most views. Also, multiple quick book reviews in a video get views. Booktok changed how peeps watch booktube
Please do a video with recommendations for books with ambiguous endings or unsatisfactory/extremely unexpected endings. I would love to get some good recs!
Oh noooo, not sure this is the one I would have recommended for you! 🙈 But then again, romances are one of the hardest genres to recommend well, I think, because everyone has their own idiosyncratic tastes & experiences flavoring their preferences. But if nothing else, glad you got to try a new Canadian author and thanks for trying my recommendation!! 💚
I'm so glad you loved Circe and Kaikeyi. They are two of my all time faves. I would also recommend checking out The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec if you are ever looking for something similar to Circe and Kaikeyi. Great video.
Oh my god I think you found the one time ever I’ve recommended a book I didn’t read bc it was such a tough video to pair books💀 glad you enjoyed the book it lead you to though 😂
It was a pretty iconic collection of pairings you pulled together; if not for time constraints I would have included my reaction to the entire video cause I was quite impressed by it all!
In a Holidaze is my favorite Christina Lauren. It's also my favorite romance, my favorite time travelling book, and my favorite holiday book so it clearly hits the mark in lots of categories. I highly recommend it! (Also, I'd love to see your perspective on holiday themed books--horror, romance, thriller.)
I also love isolated, insular stories more than anything else! If you could do a recommendation of any books with that trope, I would totally love that.
For Christina Lauren I would totally recommend Something Wilder. For some reason that is just my FAVORITE book by them and I've read quite a few. I can't wait for their next book though. The Unhoneymooners is really good too, I loved those characters.
I'm so glad you did this video again, it was one of the first videos I ever watched from you and was immediately so into your content. Yay for loving Kaikeyi! It was one of my favorite books of last year, Jananie has the best recommendations!
considering so many of the books I read are recommendations from your channel, its so weird to watch a video of yours where I've already read two of the books but it almost makes me feel more successful in my reading!
This was so much fun! 🥰 I'd love to see this but with more fantasy/sci fi instead of the horror/romance picks, since it seems the most successful book was the one fantasy.
Please read alone with you in the ether by Olivie Blake. I would love to hear what you think of it. It's a romance novella and it deals with mental health. The formatting is interesting and the narrative voice changes throughout. It's one of my new favorites and I would love to hear your opinion now that you're reading more romance 💕💕💕
I finally read Kennedy Ryan this year and she became an instant favourite! I know you don't love stories about celebrities, but I think Reel is worth trying!
I haven’t read A God in the Shed so I couldn’t say how similar it really is, but with the way you’re describing the overall vibes, I’m wondering if you’ve read The Ocean at the End of the Lane? It’s one of my personal faves and it seems to check a bunch of the same boxes 💜
amazing to see you enjoy we need to do something, it was my fave book of last year 🤩 i totally agree with all the books you compared it to, i’ve read and enjoyed them all so now i need more like it!!
I always love these kind of videos from you! And it's always love that you use videos from youtubers that are still really small. For me it's a great way to get more booktubers on my page :)
A good slow burn romance is Terms and Conditions by Lauren Asher. It's book 2 of the Dreamland Billionaires series. The first book Fine Print was good too but number 2 is a favorite. I'm reading #3 Final Offer now. I think this series so far is pretty good.
Enjoying your romance reading! I'd love to see you read a Jasmine Guillory sometime (don't think I've seen you read one before). Though it's not one of her more popular ones, I think you might enjoy By the Book. It's enemies to lovers, forced proximity and it's based on Beauty and the Beast. Has a very nice setting in Santa Barbara. However, no steam, unlike Jasmine Guillory's other books. Her books with steam have great, non-cringey steam. As with all of Jasmine Guillory, it's very relaxed and doesn't have a ton of plot. Always very body positive but with very little discussion of the bodies. Highly recommend the audio books as I think of her audio books have the same narrator and she is a very relaxing narrator.
I read The River by Peter Heller (and liked it). I think The Guide carries on with Jack's life after the events that happened in The River. It's weird that it isn't mentioned in the blurb...
Please pick up The Dog Stars by Peter Heller! That is his best and most famous "non-urgent apocalyptic" book. I'm a fan of all his books but -- even though I totally get why Noelle picked it -- The Guide really isn't a good place to start with his backlist. (For starters, its actually a sequel... 😬)
I recommend reading Roomies by Christina Lauren. It’s a marriage of convenience, forced proximity, one bed romance, plus an Irish musician (☘️🥰). I’ve really only read this book of theirs but love the tropes. The ending wraps up briskly, so it’s not perfection but I would recommend it to anyone interested in reading Christina Lauren.
Since you asked for more Christina Lauren recommendations, I would suggest Josh & Hazel's Guide to Not Dating. It's fun, very good, and not too serious. I say that because so many booktubers, who I admire but who don't primarily read romance, view the romance genre as a "palate cleanser" as fluff, before they get back to the stuff they really like to read that is much more substantive, and they get indignant when a romance becomes serious or tries to handle serious topics because that's not what they came to romance for.... I'm not saying that's you, but it is some people I follow. (I tend to ignore romance book comments from them because *I know*. I'm in my 60s and have been reading the genre since the 1970s and know it much more than they do.... ) Anyway, this is a bugaboo of mine and I'm beginning to think I should start my own romance channel by someone who isn't in their 20s/30s - someone whose had a long, long view of the genre - from Woodiwiss to Tessa Dare or whoever the latest darling is now - the highs and lows, etc. If I only I wasn't lazy, low tech, and not camera ready.

Any other librarians in the chat wanting to go into readers advisory theory with Kayla?
Love these videos - thank you for sharing your thoughts and continually making my recommendations better (yes, even if I haven't read the book).
I want you to go into readers advisory theory. That sounds interesting
Have you read 'That Inevitable Victorian Thing'?
Its a dna based matching system alternate history. Very good!
What should I read if I loved Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries? If anyone has recommendations, I'd appreciate it 🧚🏻♀️
