They barge the bridge collapsed bridge debris to the new 10-acre laydown yard used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to process wreckage from the Francis Scott Key Bridge site. An estimated 50,000 tons of concrete and steel collapsed; once removed, the wreckage is sorted and transported two miles away by barge to Sparrows Point. Hey Jeff, I’m a truck driver that hauls containers from the port. My company used to load wrecked cars into shipping containers to be shipped internationally. They indeed do have bills of lading!
I can also vouch for this... many Auctioned wrecks get bought up and sent to Europe, there is a guy with a channel, Arthur tussik, he does complete rebuilds of totaled American cars, you can tell they are US based vehicles because they have PA, NY or NJ inspection and or registration stickers still int he windows.
He does amazing work, his rebuilds are damn near perfect but you'll get the haters who say they will never drive a rebuilt totaled out car. IMHO, If Arthur did the rebuilding I would have no trouble forking over money for a rebuild he worked on... other guys... there are maybe one or two other guys with channels dedicated to rebuilds I would easily hand over money too and save myself 10-20k for certain cars... and sometimes they don't even have a salvage or rebuilt title.
As a resident of MD I greatly appreciate your detailed updates. The local news only has time for superficial coverage at best. If you really want to know what's going on I come to your channel!

They need to use controlled demolition for the truss on the Dali because it's still effectively a bridge spanning two points of contact. If they keep cutting out truss members at some point what remains in place is going to buckle and collapse, so to do it safely without precision cutting they'd need to build up piers underneath it to support the structure.
I agree. Manually cutting a structure like this with people close by is a no-no as there is no way to tell what happens when a truss or whatever gives in. Im curious as to how the structure will collapse when it goes boom. I know it is all about timing and placement of the charges, but I expect some collateral damage to Dali no matter what. There's too much material hanging directly over the ship, and gravity cant be ignored..

I imagine the cranes are being used like piers, to support some of the load while pre-cuts and thermal charges are set.

I agree. There would be no way I would hang in a basket with a torch and cut a piece at a time. If I did that, I would end up pinned to the bottom under some 100 ton piece of steel.

My previous workplace had a facility about 150 yards from my office building that would explode things for testing. They never gave us warning. One moment typing away on a keyboard, next a "big" boom and jump in our chairs, and back to typing. Good times.
Its not just the port of Baltimore that has a problem with stolen cars ending up in containers. Recently, Radio-Canada did a report on that subject and the port of Montreal. Many of those vehicles have GPS trackers, so some owners are able to track their vehicle as they get moved around. In many cases, the owners can see from the GPS trackers that their vehicle is in a container in the port, and have been told by police that they can't do a thing because once its in the port, its the responsibility of the border agency. Some of them do end up in Africa, but there's also a number of them ending up in Eastern Europe. They can't even be bothered to cut them up for pieces, which tells you just how brazen they've gotten and how little they fear the authorities.
When you drive over a bridge you don't realise just how big the steel is. I've drove over the Menai bridge in the UK (Great deal shorter than the Francis Scott)many times it wasn't till I walked over it that I realised how big the steel and the bolts are.
Your coverage of this situation, Champlain Towers and others has always been remarkable. Great job.

My aunt shipped her US-bought car back to Europe when she returned, also in a container. I wasn't convinced a car would fit into a container, but it certainly arrived here in Europe in one piece and I could drive it here ;-)

Nice reporting Jeff, keeping us in the know up here in Northern Ontario. Just to add a comment on stolen vehicles, April 3 2024- Almost 600 stolen vehicles have been recovered in Montreal following a joint operation between numerous police forces and the Canada Border Services Agency
CBSA, as well as Ontario and Quebec police forces, made the announcement Wednesday in Montreal,
"These vehicles were destined to be exported overseas to markets in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America,"
a potential value of approximately $34.5 million

Jeff, they use a shaped charge that will cut steel like a knife. They are probably cutting holes to allow them to place the charges in the best orientation. The charges will cut the steel at that point, instantly.
And yes working on cranes and salvage work pays a lot of money. Welders, riggers, working in climbing gear, working on heavy lift cranes, and with 12 hour days.
Generally not a bunch of unskilled laborers.
Will someone be reporting what the total cost is?

Jeff, the metal is a strong conductor of sound waves. The reverberations could definitely hurt someone's ears inside of that radius. Picture a few really large tuning forks.

@@jeffostroff Big bang boom is more like low explosives that you'd get with TNT and ANFO. These are high explosives with a sharp crack and light puff. Basically no earth shattering kaboom here.

Spring 1977, in the Army. There was a big promotion party/cookout for guys getting promoted. One of the guys had just come back from a job where he got to blowup a bridge in the deep south. There was an old guy sitting with a bunch of us. He told us that the time he blew a bridge in WWII, was the most fun that he ever had. It turned out that he was an LTG and was the Chief of Engineers. Speaking with an acquaintance who is in the world of demolition and underwater demolition and he said everything was holding on using any kind of explosives until the last of human remains have been recovered underwater. Now that that's been accomplished things can speed up noticeably. Makes total sense.

The reason for the larger exclusion zone is two fold.
Basic physics of sound propagation says that sounds travels farther over water for a given decibel amplitude of the sound wave because there are no obstructions on the water surface to impede the wave or absorb the energy of the wave.
Also depending on atmospheric conditions there could be what is termed an inversion effect, it means that sound wave can possibly be trapped in a layer over the water and refracted back down, sort of like a conduit causing it to propagate much farther than on land. Similar to themoclines found underwater can cause sound to propagate hundreds of km from their point of origin.
The building demolition is not a good comparison in make since it's over land and also the charges are contained within the structure, causing the blast waves to dissipate within the building's shell.
The second reason for the large exclusion zone are possible flying metal fragments which act exactly like shrapnel, the geotextile covers over the shaped charge detonation sites might not stop all metal fragments from getting out.
There have been spectators killed in the past because of flying debris and over water and at a low angle these shards can skip long distances(a spectator was killed in Australia watching a building demolition, they were on a boat watching the event.)

Like I said from the start, the mess is too complex to cut and pick. Cut and pick, if anything goes wrong you lose folks. Shaped charges cutting everything into small units reduces the odds of puncturing the hull of the ship, or entrapping the ship further, and everyone should get to go home at the end of the day. They issued the notice today, they'll drop it Friday, and after waiting for the silt to settle and divers to check the debris field to ensure there are no snags they'll start hauling the ship back to the docks, if the ship starts to move on its own, they will start to tow it immediately to prevent holing the hull. The ships crew will man maneuvering stations, but the bridge crew will be in a sheltered position immediately aft the bridge, and as soon as the *BOOM*s finish? You will see them rush to the bridge and man the helm even if its blasted open just in case there is movement and they have to direct the tugs to begin the tow. That has always been the safest way to extract a ship out of this mess.
My guess is there will be harbor pilots onboard helping to take the Dali back to port.

There is a huge problem with shipping stollen cars out of newark as well. There is a lack of manpower with law enforcement compared to the sheer number of containers going through the port every day.

From past demolitions, there are a large number of charges that are used depending on where, what kind of material is to be cut, how it is to be dropped, etc. Some of them exert a large, quick force that just pushes the steel out of the way instead of blowing it. Some of this stuff burns so fast, it is thousands of feet per second.

Friday will not happen. They have to get all the cuts made, inspected, and loaded with the shape charges. Then a 2 day notice of when the blast will occur. Wave after wave of rain is headed toward Baltimore. They have 1 chance to get the blast 80%+ complete/correct. It's going to be interesting how the blast will push the Dali.
Second the above. There will be near zero push from the charges themselves, how the cut sections fall will be the only question. Still a lot of weight on the bow of the Dali keeping it grounded; so the question I have will be whether the weight reduction will be enough to free it immediately or will they still need to unload the bridge deck to get her free. It would not surprise me to see them add mooring lines to whats left of the pier to make sure she doesn't move.
@@kstricl I'd estimate the concrete pier laying across the bow is substantially heavier than the trusses.
@@davidzachmeyer1957 it looks like the pier section is gone now. The bridge deck surface though is still very heavy so that might keep the bow planted.
My first thought when I saw the Toyotas in the shipping containers was: is that a stolen vehicle? I think I remember 60 minutes doing a story long ago that stolen luxury vehicles were quickly shipped out of the country. I think that before the Dali is released, that an investigation is in order. It would be awesome if a by-product of this tragedy, is that this beaks open and exposes a crime syndicate for punishment.
I think the demolition will be louder than in a building. In a building the charges are destroying internal structures where the surrounding walls muffle some of the sound while here there is nothing to muffle the sound. But I rather doubt, that it will be so much louder.
Bridge-controlled demolition reminds me of the building demolition examples shown on other UA-cam videos.

The 40 foot containers holds up to 44,000 lbs. and the 20 foot container holds up to 22,000 lbs. There is a lot of weight on the ship. What I like to know is how they will get all that debris out of the water.

Explosives must be much safer to cut parts under tension, which can snap in different directions. Don't envy those guys using oxy/propane torches in the video.
Done work in storm stricken forests. Sometimes logs jumps in unexpected directions when cut. So far not hurt or killed.

With the new bridge having lights, they can direct ships to their target passage with the lighting at night. The Oakland Bay Bridge had the lighting as a show/art exhibit. It is now being replaced/maintained because it was so well received.
I wrote about shear charges just a couple of days after they were using cutting torches torches just days after the bridge fell. Its taken all this time to use this technique.
They are doing a great job. The other issue they have to deal with is the huge cement support column embedded on the starboard side of the bow. That looks like a big task.
I think once they limp Dali to port, cranes can then lift that concrete pier cap off the Dali
That has been cut in half already.

There's two reasons why the charges will probably be louder that the condo demolition. The charges inside the building muffles them as opposed to charges suspended in mid air with nothing to attenuate the shock waves, and second, sound carries really well over water, not so much over dry land

That ship likely won't be sea-worthy for an Atlantic crossing, I would assume to some berth in Baltimore or MAYBE down to Norfolk where enough repairs can be made to allow for a safe crossing of open ocean. If she's small enough (I don't think she is, though), maybe one of those heavy-lift vessels that can slip under then lift her from the water and transport her like was done with a cruise ship a couple years ago?
I watched a bridge that was the same type as this one in controlled demolition last year, it wasn't that loud and fell fast, if you want to see it look for Rocheport Missouri river bridge demolition, I was under it before it was blasted and got pictures of the cuts and blast boxes.
Just a heads up the controlled demolition will be done by a professional demolition company and not the ARMY.
These explosives are specifically designed to cut the steel based on the type and thickness of the steel, also the cuts that are being done are also very specific.
Fragments are a real problem, linear shaped charges spray a curtain of frags at speeds faster than a rifle bullet.
Back on Champlain Tower. The half still standing that was demo'd...were those people able to salvage and possessions before?

I see some heavy black occlusions across the beams and girders that look like cable connections. ONLY I don't see cables draped back to the cranes. COULD THAT BE WHERE THE SHAPED CHARGES ARE ALREADY PLACED? We need some different views to verify.

They are probably consulting prime time coverage for the drop! Who doesn't want to watch that?! Just after dusk for maximum fireworks effects?
Now that's a no brainer.
When they blow up concrete, the charge is confined inside the concrete beam. This muffles the sound.
The explosive used to blow up concrete tends to be a slower explosive which creates less noise.
A cutting charge is different, you want the fastest explosive you can get, therefore it's noisy.
In this case, the strain in the steel structure is really just an educated guess.
Because of this, they will only be able to pre-cut the structure a small amount. Which means they'll have to use more explosives, alot more, maybe 3x or even 5x as much as would ordinarily be used.
I think everyone will be very surprised by just how loud it's going to be.
Your comment about finding the 6th worker who was killed followed by" now they got that out of the way" struck me as pretty cold. I don't know if they have released the names of the deceased workers but this was someone's husband, son, father who died tragically. My condolences to the family of this man.

The shaped charges allow cutting the steel instantly avoiding all the spring loaded tension in the steel. Safest possible way.
Army has learnt that 1000m is a safe distance when using metal cutting charges. Steel flies an incredible distance at 7000m/second detonation. The Safety protocols are to keep people safe at all times.

Its a big problem at the port with stolen cars in shipping containers. I was on a tour and they found many high end cars that were trying to be sent overseas, but fortunately were found before being loaded on the ships. But to add to your comments, these cars are usually sent to places like Nigeria and then are stripped down so the parts can be sold like a parts store.
I’ve wondered when the would use explosives. I’ve worked on 10-15 structure removals. First you will make a pre cut leaving a safe amount uncut. The charges look like 2” copper angle iron with a small amount of RDX sandwiched in it. The stand-off is a small block of wood. With the advent of non-els there is no det cord which keeps the vibration at a minimum. We’ve done these just little distance to the new bridge.
Jeff, I suspect this large radius for noise protection is because sound travels farther over water than it does over land… Think of it like voices carry farther and clearer over a lake than they do over a parking lot. Water is more dense.
They expect to have to dredge around the Dali AFTEr the shaped charges and prob sone of that debris removal first.

The safety zone is big enough to reduce the radio signal strength of any transmission outside the zone. There's also the possibility of flying shrapnel because the overall condition of the steel due to age is not completely known.

I haven't been able to see one from the photos and videos but if you spot a yellow 'Q' flag flying over the bridge, that would be a "quarantine" flag meaning no one from the crew is allowed to get off the ship. This is sometime the case with foreign flag ships with foreign crews if there's problems with passport or immigration regulations, if the ship is well over-due for leaving port, or if the ship is under investigation, which it is.
