Round baling looks easy but it sounds like there needs to be some skill involved to make a nice bale. How long would it take for a beginner to learn this process?

there is definitely alot more to it. Most round balers require a perfect balance of hay on either side of the baler to avoid a loose and mishaped bale. You can see the little bars on his monitor in the tractor. It shows you how full each side is. Learning how to bale doesn't take long, but becoming efficient with no wasted movement takes many many years of practice, trial and error. Every single machine is slightly different somehow, each have their own quirks. I produce around 6000 small square, and around 700 round bales each year. A lot of it comes down to who rows the hay. A good rower will make a world of difference.
This young man is doing a great job

I have baled with multiple balers and each one is a little different and has a sweet spot for speed and a timing, but all in all they are fairly similar. I would say give someone 2 dozen bales with some guidance and then let them learn the rest on their own unless they ask. I am a person who likes to learn from experience and hands-on, which applies in my opinion best to farming and equipment.

Can i ask you say you have used a number of balers , what would you say is the best make you have used , we make round bale silage and we have a contractor , or custom guy as you say bale it he has a very new John Deere baler and it makes the best bales , so tightly packed and very heavy , but just interested to know what you think ? I am in England UK and we rear cattle to Beef weight

For us, it was dealer support and parts availability was a huge part of my decision to stay with John Deere. If someone gets to know their own machine, they can make just as good as any other baler. I think a person also needs to have a goal and an idea of what they are after to make a selection.
