A short clip from Beyond the Glory where they talk about Evander Holyfield during the 1984 olympics and how he had his opportunity unfairly taken away.
I saw him get disqualified watching it live with my dad in Canada. I didn't know who he was at the time but I started boxing ~1 month later and went on to become his sparring partner when he became the heavyweight champ. Strange how life works...Christopher Hahn-Proverbs 16:3,9-
That was some super slick referee tactics right there. The best footwork was done by the ref!! Deceptive trickery at it's level best! However, Evander Holyfield was 22 years old so...old enough to KNOW that it is highly probable and possible HE could be up against more than one opponent inside the "square circle." At the end of the day... ultimately...it was his own fault. Yet, if we look at the bright side; this is an excellent bout to use for future film study for up and coming young boxers. At least something positive will still come from this psychotic debauchery. 🙂
I’m glad to see the “winner” grabbed Holyfield’s arm to show who was the real winner. When Roy Jones Jr got robbed the guy who won the worst decision in boxing history held Roy’s arm up as well. That’s cool to see.
I can't compare this to Roy Jones. Roy Jones was robbed in a landslide fight by a crooked decision. This was referee judgement, which was unfortunate because Holyfield was well ahead, but the punch was thrown after the referee said stop. I think Holyfield could have easily stopped and not thrown that punch, others disagree and that's ok, but there's no debate or any judgment defense with Roy Jones. That was just outrageous and disgusting.
The gold medal winner, Anton Josipovic and myself, we are living in the same town, like one block away. I see him pretty often, and hearing stories about him. He was robbed for not fighting Hollyfield, win or lose... believe me..
This must have been devastating but Holyfield handled himself with great composure. In the end, he became the most successful pro from the class of 1984.
According to Wikipeda; " ... referee Gligorije Novicic of Yugoslavia disqualified a clearly dominant Holyfield for repeatedly hitting on the break. While Novicic yelled break during a Holyfield flurry of combinations, Barry went down. As a result Barry was awarded the silver medal, although he was not permitted to contest the gold medal bout against Yugoslav Anton Josipovic since he had been technically knocked out."
Man i had forgotten about this fight!!! I was only 8yrs old when it happened and had just started boxing. However i do remember Roy Jones Jr getting robbed out of his GOLD!!!!! I remember that fight like it was yesterday. Evander did sometimes don't think I could've done and so did Roy. And that's not blowing up and start screaming at the ref and judges. Talk about character and these guys had it then. I ended up meeting Evander later at Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana. It was 1988 and when I asked him for his autograph. He grabbed the sheet of paper that they gave me when I walked in. It had all the boxers names and what their accomplishments were. He signed it Evander the Real Deal Holyfield, future heavy weight champion of the world!!!! Back then I was a huge Mike Tyson fan. I remember waiting for Holyfield to fight Tyson. I really didn't know who I was going to pull for. Here I was watching Mike Tyson getting into the ring to fight some nobody named Buster Douglas and Evander in the seats watching the fight. Cause after Tyson beats Douglas they would fight. Well everyone knows what happened next. I cried for an hour after Tyson got knocked out. But Evander ended up fight Douglas and knocking him out in the 3rd round. What a lot of people don't really know about Evander. He was a very light heavyweight. So when he was fighting Riddick Bowe, he was going up against in my mind a huge monster. But I thought Holyfield would still win. I was wrong and they both had a great career. Then Lennox Lewis came along and Riddick Bowe didn't want any part of him. People always say something about ducking fighters. Well nobody really talks about the day that Riddick Bowe on ESPN standing over trash cans. Threw away the belts and told Lennox if he wanted them to come get them, cause Riddick Bowe was retired. I really didn't know who Lennox was at the time. I knew that he was from across the pond and bad enough to make the undisputed Heavy Weight Champion of the World retire. Then I got to watch him box. He did something that only Ali had done. 3 time champion and come back to beat the guy that beat him!!!! I have Lennox Lewis 3 on my all time greatest heavy weight champions. Anyway thank you for the upload. This really did bring back some old memories and that's better than winning $1,000 in my book. I hope someone reads this and possibly learns something. Anyone can say that they will be Champion someday. Only a few do. So it was awesome that Evander won and me sitting there with all my friends holding his autograph pamphlet that I had gotten years earlier. What a feeling.
Mary Lou Retton was the sh*t of the '84 Olympics I don't even remember this nor did hear of it til now. The first Olympic robbery I was aware of was Roy Jones jr. in '88 and then Floyd in '96 but I see it was an ongoing trend.

That just shows you that Boxing in the Olympics has a HORRIBLE reputation of BAD CALLS & DECISIONS & DISQUALIFACATIONS & CROOKED JUDGES who get paid off or wined & dined for a country's favor like in the case with ROY JONES JR... What's sad is I don't even know anyone who cares or watches Boxing in the Olympics anymore, unless your friends or family of the Boxer. I was at a restaurant in 2021 during the summer games and the bar tender said we got Olympic Boxing or Cooking with Bobby Flay. 10 seconds later were watching Bobby Flay cook on his program.

Its true that Roy Jones was flatout robbed, but Evander cant blame everyone because he hit the guy after told to break. Maybe the ref was incompetent but he still hit him after he said break. Unless what I said about the ref is wrong then Holyfield has no case.
The ref was a crook. The ref is Yugoslavian and a Yugoslavian fighter already had won a spot to fight for the gold. The ref knew evander would destroy his countrymans chance at winning gold. So he disqualified evander for some made up bullshit and declared barry the winner. But since Barry was knocked out he wasn't eligible to fight for a month. Therefore the Yugoslavian ref set it up so his fellow countryman the Yugoslavian boxer won the gold metal by default. It was obvious what the ref done and it made him and Yugoslavia look like cowards.
were you really sparring partner of holyfield? it's sound so incredible ! For me HOly was and he is still the most heavyweight courageous of all time ! 46 years and still in activity ,he's incredible ! Sébastien from france
Very deceptive video. Why is it that all other videos of this fight has the ref shouting "stop" well before Holyfield's punch, but not this video. Before people get angry, they should watch and listen to some real footage of the fight, not this doctored stuff.
The footage is not doctored at all. it shows exactly what happened. theres no sound so you dont hear the ref yell stop, but simply saying stop is not enough. the ref should visually make a gesture because they may not have heard him.
the ref's body does not move at all. he just says stop. If you watch boxing, referees are very visual with their commands. he was standing at least 3 feet away and his body did not move. usually when refs break fighters they move in closer, almost coming between the 2 fighters, but this ref did not move at all.
Have you watched other (undoctored) versions of the fight yet? The ref quite clearly shouts stops well before Holyfield punches. The video above was "adjusted" for the US audience, to make it look like the ref called it too late.
Not even close to Ali....although I do respect Holyfield., he couldn't knock down Foreman in his fourties and won a 12 round decision when Ali made Foreman take a 10 count in his prime close to 20 years earlier.
He didnt call break. He made up this bullshit because he didnt want holyfield to fuck up his Yugoslavian countryman for the gold medal. So the ref made the Yugoslavian fighter win gold by default. Fucking cowards.
@DAVID, Sorry, I meant to say "after the ref called break." I think it was a foul, maybe Holy didn't mean it, but it was well after the call from the ref, hence he had to DQ him
Holyfield hit him late, he broke the rules, he gets DQd, nothing to cry about here. This not like the Roy Jones fight. I know Holyfield was towelling the guy but he hit him late therefore handicapping his opponent unfairly, he deserves the DQ. Holyfield is a great fighter but a sanctimonious, 1-tracked mind who cannot see things as they are sometimes.
@GOATAli You might have a pint if the bell had sounded. Holyfield landed the punch after the referee called for a break. Problem was, he called for the break while the punch was in motion and Holyfield didn't have time to pull it back.
His opponent showed class afterwards by raising Holyfields hand but all Holyfield could do was ignore that and bitch about how he got robbed, and bitch about how Lewis wasnt robbed by Don King in their "draw". BTW the guy who "beat" him in Olympics is Kevin Barry, managed David Tua for years from since he was a kid until he recently stole all Tuas money and ran.
@mstia127 yes that would be good but what about home decisiones? that the fans favor the home player and not teh visitor had happen to me lots of times
hollyfield only got on top after punching after stop in the first round got a standing eight just seconds latter. he hit barry after stop on at least three different occasions when barry had dropped his guard. on the other hand barry new his best chance of winning was to upset hollyfield and that he did. I would ask the question what should have the ref done tell barry he had to carry on or award the fight to holyfield on a foul.
THANK YOU! Huntarama FINALLY! someone else that didn't get wrapped up in that B.S. Reagan vs The World '84 Olympics hype. He was cautioned several times by that ref, if I remember correctly, to stop when instructed, and he ignored the warnings and kept trying to get the advantage on the breaks. Funny how that fight with Barry in it's entirety, isn't uploaded on YT... And Holyfield fought the same way as a professional...dirty.
The referee was nowhere near view and not loud enough. The "fix" was in on that one. The referee could clearly see the athletic disparity between Evander Holyfield and his opponent and any excuse he could find he used against Holyfield. Don't believe me? Okay, what was the name of Evander Holyfield's olympic finals opponent. Right. That's why the referee did what he did.
Well yeah,,,, you could be winning the fight, but if you do something stupid, you can still be disqualified. Hollyfield losing that fight was justified.
Ortiz headbutted Mayweather beforehand ... One of the most blatant headbutts I've seen all because he couldn't land on Floyd. Ortiz took the decision to play dirty, just happens Mayweather is better than him at that too. Plus the referee didn't say break sooo technically it was fine.
Yip in that instance he probably did. What I'm saying is that it was repeated throughout the fight to the point the ref ended up stopping the fight. Incorrectly for that instance? Maybe, but after being repeatedly warned it led to that decision. bigdatut and WetWilly - I appreciate we may not agree on this but what I really appreciate is that you both made your points without the abuse that seems so common on this site. No need when civilised debate can occur. Regards
No, Roy Jones gold was outright stolen by corrupt judges after he easily won the fight. This was much more complicated. Evander Holyfield clearly hit the guy after the ref said Stop. It's a tough call because there wasn't much delay between Stop and the punch. It probably could have gone either way so therefore anyone honest about it won't blame the ref. It's unfortunate because Holyfield was by far the better fighter.
I watched it live and nothing has changed to this day. It was very unfortunate because Evander was clearly the better fighter... But he threw the punch after the ref said Stop. The punch was devastating, so the ref had no choice but to disqualify. Very unfortunate, but if you don't understand then you never spent 5 seconds in a boxing ring.
@@viharikrishnan5588 That's just not true. Just cause you start a combination doesn't mean you get to finish the entire combination. The RIGHT HAND hits the body a microsecond after the referee says stop. That's ok because you can't stop that punch. But then he throws the hard LEFT HOOK clearly after "stop" that didn't need to be thrown. No different when the runner is leveled a yard out of bounds. At 3:29 of the video, slow down the speed to 1/4 helps. It's indisputable. First the right hand hits immediately AFTER stop, which is legit, then the complete second punch is thrown, which is not legit. As the announcer says, "I'm absolutely sure that was a punch after the referee says stop." You would be as angry as f*** as I would be if somebody hit you or I like that in sparring or a match. I like Holyfield, always have, but it was absolutely the right call and the ref had the guts to make it. I salute him. Watch the video: ua-cam.com/video/2xzUbsEcxEo/v-deo.html
Rules count for americans too, so if he did not want to be disqualified, he should not knock the opponent out, after "stop" ... it is quite clear, but since entitled americans have thise tendency of expecting a different set of rules for americans, well ... not surprising.
C'mon guys, Evander robbed himself. He was warned on more than one ocasion but persisted on hitting after the ref called break. Of course Evander could have won that gold blindfolded, that goes without saying. But to say he was robbed for not obeying the rules...shit we may as well say Ben Johnson was too! As for Barry, after this fight, the man was assaulted by some of the locals. He felt bad about the result because like everyone else, knew Evander should've won gold but it wasn't his fault.
The Ref DQ'ed him because he hit him after the low punch. But in retrospect he was already throwing the left hook when the ref started his motion to break them apart after the low punch.
do the tyson fans realize that holyfield fought about 44 fights b/4 tyson and not 1 other fighter complained more then the tyson fans, I was a big tyson fan until he went to jail for good reason to. it was sad but he did it to himself. and when he fought holyfield holyfield won. the 2nd headbutt tyson ran in to get inside and when he did that they hit heads, the 2nd headbutt was more tysons fault if you watch it again. the 1st little butt they both came in, but mostly holyfield came in on that 1
Damn, the ref is yugoslavian and hes countryman already qualified in the gold medal match. Just sayin, go figure. Real deal woulda been the favorite to win it all.
Corruption. Olympics referees are not allowed to work bouts involving their own countrymen. Holyfield's combatant was knocked out and not allowed to continue to the gold metal match. Due to the questionable disqualification Holyfield was not allowed to continue to the gold metal match. So by disqualifying Holyfeild the Yugoslavian Referee gave the GOLD METAL to his Yugoslavian Countryman who did not even have to fight anyone in the Gold metal round/match!
so hollyfield and barry are good mates and evander has said he knows he threw that punch late. he also appoligised to barry for taking away the chance to fight for the gold by kong barry after the break and by regulations barry couldnt fight in the final. also barry knows he was going to lose the fight and if evander had have been listening to the ref properly he may have not gotten a medal at all. yes the ref could have been closer...yes the ref could have been louder but it is clear that the punch was thrown after the call by the ref. as for the people saying this was racisum. WHAT A F#$@#$G JOKE.!
KIWI BOX u can thank holifield for u shit boxer becoming a somebody iff he hadn't have dropped him after the bell he'd still be a nobody, think on that one
you are probably right but we will never know because evander did throw late! coaching is a bit different to boxing though too so i think barry would still have ended up coaching. his hole familys life is based around boxing
you know nothing about boxing. holyfield was robbed. terrible thing happened here, if you can't see that, you don't care about a fighter that worked so hard, and has more heart then i've ever seen. that dude was holding like crazy. watch the full fight before you start talkin sh@@.
Jesse chiton. Really? Racism? I'd love to know how you figured that out. You just jumped straight to it being definitely racism. I'm guessing that any time something unfair happens to a black person, you just call racism every time. Why people want to be victims all the time is so sad, and a terrible way to go through life.
Holyfield handled it with class and grace. He got screwed - but the whole world knows who won the gold that year.
I saw him get disqualified watching it live with my dad in Canada. I didn't know who he was at the time but I started boxing ~1 month later and went on to become his sparring partner when he became the heavyweight champ. Strange how life works...Christopher Hahn-Proverbs 16:3,9-

I love evander, he won. but two thumbs for the winner(kiwian)
,taking holyfield's hand and shows that something wrong with the referee!!!
That was some super slick referee tactics right there. The best footwork was done by the ref!!
Deceptive trickery at it's level best!

Evander is clearly the champion, an d thumbs up for the new Zealand athlete.
Holyfield, at age 48, is rated #5 in America and #19 in the world!!!! wow!!!!!
This must have been devastating but Holyfield handled himself with great composure. In the end, he became the most successful pro from the class of 1984.

@groman0751 No, the ref was saying break while Holyfield was landing the left hook that floored his opponent.
Holyfeld has only got himself to blame. If you have been warned about something but continue to do it, what goes around comes around.
How can you hear with those helmets on and all that noise, the ref never even touched them, or spoke in their ears?

Win a gold, get a bronze. The Olympics are known for the corruption. What a joke.
read his book 'becoming holyfield'. What can i say.. mens man
the ref was yugoslavian and didnt want holyfield fighting the yugoslavian in the final, the ref apologised to holyfield years later
@Itzoficial hahaha good one.
evander won but did not raise a fuss totally awsome look what he did to tyson, evander had his number
Floyd Mayweather Jr's cheap shot KO of Victor Ortiz was 100x worse than Holyfields DQ yet Floyd didn't get DQ'd.
Mr1000words that wasn’t the olympics dummy
The ref was standing to far from them, he had to be ready to jump in i between them.
+KoivuTheHab you came too UA-cam too tell guys too get an education?
Jokes on you dumbass.
+KoivuTheHab Good god, ok buddy you win. You may remove your face mask and cape now - you saved the day.
Roy jones also got screwed out of a metal
Ref knew evander would destroy the Yugoslavian boxer so he killed 2 birds with 1 stone by pulling this bullshit.
Ortiz headbutted Mayweather beforehand ... One of the most blatant headbutts I've seen all because he couldn't land on Floyd. Ortiz took the decision to play dirty, just happens Mayweather is better than him at that too. Plus the referee didn't say break sooo technically it was fine.
dude you cant punch after the ref says stop
Love the real Deal. My champion!
I saw the fight. Definitely robbed
Regards
robbed just like jones four years later..
Hahaha Kevin Barry a nobody iff holifoeld didn't knock him out after the bell
He trains Joseph Parker now ...a good bloke is Kevin Barry W ⚓️
I watched it live and nothing has changed to this day. It was very unfortunate because Evander was clearly the better fighter... But he threw the punch after the ref said Stop. The punch was devastating, so the ref had no choice but to disqualify. Very unfortunate, but if you don't understand then you never spent 5 seconds in a boxing ring.
He called stop ✋ too late while the punch 🥊 was in mid air
I am a Boxer and i am saying the referee said stop in middle of a combination that holifield did
@@viharikrishnan5588 That's just not true.

"A CHRIS BROWN KNOCKOUT!!!" haha! 0:38
Guy was knocked down after referee sayed stop, with all respect to Holifield, this was good decision
Two black men robbed Jones Jnr and evader holyfield some sad shit,
By the end of the bout, Holyfield had head-butted Barry 85 times.
head gear dumbass
@@ASSman864 i think it was a joke
Wasn't funny
The Ref DQ'ed him because he hit him after the low punch. But in retrospect he was already throwing the left hook when the ref started his motion to break them apart after the low punch.
Sudija Novicic je ispravno postupio, Holifild je zasluzio diskvalifikaciju !!!
do the tyson fans realize that holyfield fought about 44 fights b/4 tyson and not 1 other fighter complained more then the tyson fans, I was a big tyson fan until he went to jail for good reason to. it was sad but he did it to himself. and when he fought holyfield holyfield won. the 2nd headbutt tyson ran in to get inside and when he did that they hit heads, the 2nd headbutt was more tysons fault if you watch it again. the 1st little butt they both came in, but mostly holyfield came in on that 1
Couldn’t rob Tyson he just one shot KO D everyone lol
Did he knock out Holyfield?
😛
i hate holyfield but you gotta feel sorry for him he was robbed blind
Holyfield is the worst player he hit him after the bell why would you call it a robbery
@june1683 BULLSHIT EVANDER HOLYFIELD IS GREAT GREAT FIGHTER AND I AM FROM RUSSI NOT EVEN AMERICAN.
Fair disqualification. Hit Barry way after the break. Evander is a cheat!
Good job referee ❤
@@dfrankmd You writing about corruption!?There's not even one nation as US, who's been rob all other sport players in any competition...
so hollyfield and barry are good mates and evander has said he knows he threw that punch late. he also appoligised to barry for taking away the chance to fight for the gold by kong barry after the break and by regulations barry couldnt fight in the final. also barry knows he was going to lose the fight and if evander had have been listening to the ref properly he may have not gotten a medal at all.
yes the ref could have been closer...yes the ref could have been louder but it is clear that the punch was thrown after the call by the ref. as for the people saying this was racisum.
Racism
Definitely
Jesse chiton. Really? Racism? I'd love to know how you figured that out. You just jumped straight to it being definitely racism. I'm guessing that any time something unfair happens to a black person, you just call racism every time. Why people want to be victims all the time is so sad, and a terrible way to go through life.
Aakash.....What a retarded comment. How the hell do you know it was racism? What a sad way to look at the world.
@@JimChap umm, nah man. I am two worlds apart from a SJW. This was racism though.
