- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained, and as voted for by everyone in the latest poll, today we’ll be exploring the thing, the 2011 prequel to John Carpenters 1982 classic, itself an adaptation of the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell.
Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr and written by Eric Heisserer, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Eric Christian Olsen.
Set roughly a week before the events of the first film, we follow Palaeontologist Kate Lloyd who is invited to a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after they stumble upon something incredible.
Initially intrigued by the alien spacecraft buried beneath the ice and the frozen remains of what appeared to be the pilot, they soon learn the shapeshifting creature was far from dead. As the nightmare fueled entity begins to take over the researchers, the group try their best to stay alive.

One of my favorite theories about "the thing" is that due to it's ability to replicate memories and consciousness it means there's a chance people are infected don't know they are infected until the thing drops their consciousness to act on its own will.
What if it 'eats' the brain last...
If The Thing has already assimilated and copied you entirely (including your brain and consciousness by extension), then you’re already gone. It’s like an identical clone of you, but a will of its own.
That’s terrifying…
something else interesting is can it's host have any impact on the thing's motivations.. like if it absorbed stephen hawking, would it develop his understanding and knowledge? could it become nihilistic and realize the futility of assimilation? could the thing become the ultimate buddha?

I think why the Thing isn't as stealthy in this movie as opposed to the original is because its the first encounter with human life and doesn't know how intelligent our species is. Hence why in the original which events take place after this the Things a lot more hush hush and not so erratic with its encounters.

maybe if they decided to make a sequel (a good one) perhaps we can somewhat get into the phycology of the Thing, every time it's discovered, it mutates and attacks people, it this idea, at some point, someone is revealed to be the Thing, before anyone tris anything, someone asked what does it want, is it just an animal trying to survive, is it a being that believes it is bringing a gift of unity to a bunch of irrational individuals, or is it just evil, we don't have to learn everything about the Thing like where in space did it come from or why it's on Earth, but a little glimpse into its mind might clue us in on what motivates it.

The original ending had Kate encountering one of the alien pilots still in hyper sleep, where it wakes up and attacks her, but gets into a fight with a mutated Sander/Pilot Thing, where they end up getting burned by the flamethrower by Carter, who was assimilated off screen by the Sander THING.

I'd picture the Alien pilot being similar in character to R.J. MacReady.
John Carpenter saw this film, and said it had a great premise, but sadly, the overuse of CGI ruins the suspense of the original film.
And he was right, as Universal executives had some of the scenes redone with CGI rather than the practical alien effects and character design. Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff said that the got screwed over by Universal, as they worked long and hard on this project.
I feel really sorry for GIllis and Woodruff, as they put a lot of work into animatronics and practical effects of the creature. I am not against CGI, as if used properly, it can enhance the picture. However this was not the case at all.
Saddest part came after, when Gillis and Woodruff got to show their skills, but it was for low budget take on The Thing, lacking story and characters. Movie needs all of the components to work. This is why we still praise John Carpenter's work.

That has to be insanely frustrating to them. You KNOW they understood just how influential to cinema the original one was. They created incredible practical masterpieces that were thrown out by some idiot who felt CGI was the way to go. If the had understood the true genius of the original, they could’ve used CGI to supplement, not replace all that work.

Hence why the movie was a big let down. Practical effects in the first flick made the Thing look like a real threat that was actually there and would kill you by a mere touch. The CGI looks like they are hallucinating it.
I like how since Colin says everyone should be transparent, the thing impersonating Juliette tries to put suspicion on him while talking to Kate before she tries to kill her. It can assess the people who r actual threats to its survival and try to sow doubt among its prey to isolate and weaken them.

@GrumpyMonkeyEnterprises: Yes--this is the narrative that I like! And this scene brings out that the situation for these poor people is already way out of control, and that they don't have an inkling as to what's in store for them!
instead of slowly killing and assimilating Kate off screen, The Thing transformed slowly to show how scary it was and let her escape so they could kill it. It would have been more effective if it didn't try to kill Kate right away and let things boil for awhile. Especially since at this point it is confirmed that Juliette and Edvard are the only assimilated people at the Outpost.
That's fucked up because that means it's intelligence is so great that it knows how to confuse people and everyone around it.
I don't think this one was quite as bad as it's made out to be. Yeah, the CGI kinda kills the whole vibe at times, but there were a couple of genuinely awesome scenes. The arm in particular was absolutely fantastic. It's just that the tension and distrust that made the original so great were sort of pushed to the side to focus on the special effects. It wasn't about the monster, it was about how we react to the monster, and to each other.
I agree, for what its worth the CGI was poor but the horror of the creatures certainly was not, I used to have nightmares of the face melding and the torso with the girl's head still on it.
Gonna be honest the mutations of the first movie can be rather random at times, like this one at least makes it like the thing's literally reshaping the flesh and bone of a human instead of suddenly having insect legs or green tentacles its all blood and flesh and thats super creepy to me
Indeed. The director and many of the actors are also fans of Cerpenter's movie. I was on the Outpost 31 forums back when they were doing research to make sure the Prequel would be as good as they could make it. Sadly, this movie got shot in the foot by the studio and rushed for time, which is why the practical effects were scrapped and the CGI stuff isn't as polished as it should be. I really feel for these people who shared the rest of the fanbase's hopes, and had them dashed so badly by studio execs who just wanted to profit off of the title, rather than let them make an epic companion piece to Carpenter's masterpiece. It's still a very good companion piece, but the story of what could've been hurts. Really if any true fans of The Thing come across the people who made this movie, don't be harsh on them. Thank them for their efforts and let them know that in our hearts, we know they were trying their best.
Whilst I hear you, I'd disagree. The CGI just fails to suspend disbelief, it tries far to hard to go "Hey! Look, remember this bit from the other movie?", and the Alien itself acts pretty much out of character to what was established or alluded to that become associated with it. IN short; it was unnecessary at best.
I enjoyed it despite its flaws. You could tell the creators gave a crap at least.

Other than studio interference, I think what kills the intense or paranoid environment is just how much the thing just actively kills in front of everyone constantly, and doesn't really leave too much mystery at all as to who it could be till the very last second.
I just chalk that up to it not being familar with humans. Throughout the movie you can see thats its adapting and eventually changes how it operates. The thing we see in Carpenters film is the product of it learning how to deal with humans.
@@Evilshtt353 You know that thought never occurred to me that as the film gets near the end is when we have the suprise reveal with the injured Norwegian falling down and his arms detaching and attacking which caught me off guard. Or when it attacked Kate by luring her away first before trying to attack her.

@@Evilshtt353 Yes. Plus, as the guys talk about in Carpenter's movie, it's been frozen in ice for 100,000 years, and probably didn't wake up in the best of moods. A bit of mind fog is fairly normal for any sort of thinking creature when they wake up. It may honestly have taken a while for them to clear their minds enough to break free of the more instinctual behaviors. The one in the snow cat is good enough that some people wonder if maybe he didn't actually just drop the earring (though you can hear a Thing-howl when he's burning)...
One of my favorite scenes in this movie also demonstrates why this was such a flop.
They check to see who's human by checking for teeth fillings, this is simple, genius, and original.
However unlike the blood test from the original it's very quick to do, so it removes all the tension entirely
Yes and no. The blood test is 100% effective in finding out who the thing is. Checking for teeth fillings is not as effective and gives a false positive for those who have no fillings. Anyone who has no fillings can be either thing or human. The blood test forces the thing to attack once discovered. The fillings test does not because it realizes even if its discovered to have none it doesn't need to attack.
I actually prefer their test in this prequel because of said false positives.
@@Evilshtt353 in the original I felt the blood test underlined the paranoia and tension because it was slower. They had to do each blood sample one at a time, having to reheat the needle, and since it would prove who was assimilated, the thing would violently react and attack everyone instantly! Everyone was on edge, both the characters and audiences.
Add that the first movie used some of the best practical effects even today, but going with cheap CGI that looked terrible. Also if you are trying to tie it into the original don't use science that wasn't available for 30 more years. It is not hard to see how even with a smaller budget it still flopped.
For a creature that can mimic its host perfectly, including their knowledge and memories, I gotta call bs on the earing.
@@iceheart1289 ya but did you really want them to do the blood thing twice? And this is a prequel so it would make sense the second film (first movie) did a better job expanding on the experiment. Like if you watch this one first and the old one after then you see that they just got better at trying to expose it. Also I still personally felt tension the whole movie lol
Fun fact: according to an interview with the director a lot was cut things like character development for certain characters, the final half, and the ending was much darker.

I believe the devs actually confirmed that this was indeed the case, and that the impostor is an alien shapeshifter like the thing
I strongly believe that the Among Us game scenario is what happened before the 2011 film with all the crew mates dead. That so-called “pilot” isn’t a pilot but is the final form of the thing in the Among Us crew’s ship… They should make another prequel to prove my hypothesis…
Nothing beats the 1982 version of The Thing 🤘🏻 The dog scene will forever be one of the most iconic yet terrifying scenes in sci-fi history!
honestly i think people over-hate this movie. Imo, the only issue is the CGI, but besides that i think it’s pretty good. Characters are decent, solid performances and the attention to detail for the John Carpenter film is really impressive, glad you covered this
As much as I didn't really enjoy this movie, I still appreciate you doing a video on it. Guess it's that time 'a year to watch the original again.

Nothing beats the 80's thing but this one wasn't so bad as far as reboots go. The cgi was the main drag.
I really enjoyed the prequel film. I saw it in the theatre when it came out. After the credits rolled, I walked out thinking, "Damn! That's how you do a prequel to a masterpiece." The prequel isn't a masterpiece, but hits all the right buttons for me. I went in knowing what the alien was and how it operated, obviously, so I knew I wasn't going to get the same level of paranoia and fear. All I wanted was a logical depiction of what exactly happened at the Norwegian camp, one that fit the aftermath we saw in the original film. That's an impressive feat of matching the two up retroactively. And we get some new, logical lore and ideas (fillings, metal plates) that fit the original (Doc Copper has a nose ring, so that's another clue that he wasn't infected, even though Mac had him tied up. Mac didn't consider piercings).
I don't mind the CGI. The story required bigger Thing effects, wholesale monstrosities tearing the Norwegian camp apart. That's harder to do with practical effects. Maybe they should've tried anyway, but I'm content with what we got. The effects artist on the original had a nervous breakdown working on that film, so maybe it was for the best that they employed CG.
I think the prequel is a worthy addition to JC's movie and accomplished extremely well what it set out to do.
What’s crazy I saw this one first then I seen the original. The original is leagues better but I appreciate how they recreated certain details in the Norwegian base from the small scene we got of it in the 1980s thing.
I enjoyed this film for what it was. It filled in some gaps for me to go like oh shit!! I remember that!! That’s what happened the that guy with his throat slit open. The creature acted so differently though going into John carpenters film. Going into this movie I knew what the thing was but the alien in this film was just so in your face all the time. Good movie but could’ve been so much better had they atleast characterized the alien the same way instead of assuming people just want action. It took away what i loved about the thing and that was cold and calculating. Waiting for that right moment so you legitimately have no idea who’s the thing and who’s not.
Although it suffered mostly from bad CGI, it had its moments. I liked how this film connected more backstory to the 1982 version. And that scene it assimilates that dude to become the 2-Face Thing was terrifying and awesome.
NoTHING will ever beat the 1982 masterpiece, but I did really enjoy this prequel.
I felt the 80s version did a lot better with the eerie uncertainty of knowing who was infected. I got the impression in that movie that not even the infected people knew until the creature had to act in self-defence -- and then their bodies started mutating horribly. Especially at the end when you just had Kurt Russel and Keith David sitting next to each other and not sure wither they were human or alien; that ending always haunted me.
However, what really blew me away was the 1951 original black and white move that I saw entirely by accident on the Horror Channel. Really suspenseful and full of great moments - like when all the men spread out to work out the shape of the object beneath the ice and ended out in the shape of a saucer.

@@d00ksI think he means he wishes the original PREQUEL was released, with _its_ practical effects. You're right, and I'm sure we all agree; don't mess with Carpenter's '82 masterpiece. It's said the 2011 prequel had practical effects, but was forced by purse string pullers to use cgi instead. I believe that's what the person was wanting to see, the 2011 prequel with its original practical effects, before greed cgi'd it.

I think in the original script the ship that the Thing was on was actually a prison ship.
One of my favorite movies of ALL-TIME!! The whole premise of "The Thing 2011" is what was missing for decades...."what happened before the 1982" masterpiece. Would have given us full closure if we got to see what happened to Kate as the screen faded away....
I always felt that Kate heading to the Russian base is a set up for a third film. I hope they make it!

Luckily, for Kate, the things have this odd tendency to roar/scream before attacking her in a slow, clumsy fashion, as opposed to the stealthier, lightning fast, and precise attacks they perform on virtually every other member of the cast. They must have forgotten to wear their plot armor.
This bothered the crap out of me. In the original movie we were always scattered. Mac and Childs both could have been turned or might both have been human by the end. But with this movie you never were taken off of Kate and it always let her go as oppose to how it quickly killed everyone else with ease. If they wanted to make her the main character in a The Thing movie she should have had less focus, cut down on the constant monster scare scenes where The Thing attacks for no reason, and just made a better movie.
She should have been infected when she picked up the teeth or when she first examined the alien cells under a microscope.
Imagine being a minimum 100,000 year old alien that survived since the beginning of human society as we know it in the coldest, most brutal tundra on the planet encased in ice for all that time, survive everything they throw at it, be arguably immortal, and either come up with as lame of an argument as or have someone legitimately argue that "they'll freeze out there" when you drive into a blizzard.
On the surface and on the page, this was a really solid prequel. It's just really disappointing that due to time constraints, budget cuts, and some poor decision making regarding the special and visual effects, that's always going to be its legacy.
I always fear what would happen if The Thing was successful in taking over the world.

depending what we would sacrifice to destroy it and later rebuild the world, it might actually not even take over it. Although with how our society is built and bred to be brainwashed i honestly wouldnt be surprised if we all died.

Such an underrated film. You can tell a lot of passion went into this film, aside the studio forcing them to use CGI heavily, and change the original ending. It's too bad that happened, otherwise it would have been a perfect prequel.

This movie had me looking over my shoulder for a while as a teen. The possibility of such a creature appearing was all too great.

Shortly after the first Thing movie came out, someone wrote a novella from the perspective of the alien, which is actually a benevolent collective consciousness that is bewildered at the hostility of the humans. This is because the assimilation process is so terrifying to us.

Even after having watched the original a couple of times, I don't hate this movie. I actually like it because it shows just how fast and deadly the creature could actually be and even though its CGI, it makes for great body horror material.

I was lucky enough to see The Thing and Alien back to back on a VHS tape my brother had in 1983. I was nine at the time and it set me up for a lifetime of love for science fiction. Superb film, the original, with practical effects and the grittiness. Great vid dude.🇦🇺
Though it doesn't remotely live up to the original, I personally really enjoy this film for what it is. The creature designs, although totally degraded by the cgi, are interesting, and I also like the chemistry between Kate and Sam. (Not to mention it introduced me to Joel Edgerton and the song Who Can It Be Now, both of which I now adore.)

Rob Ager has some fantastic videos on theories and questions from Carpenters film that I didn't even realize existed before. Like the Keys and who destroyed the blood bank and continuity of the jackets and even the eye flare theory. His thoughts on this film are very insightful as well!

15:13 One of my favorite shots of the original. I’m such a nerd for this movie that I know that if you look closely in the background, the black rounded shape behind The Thing here is one of the puppeteers’ head and shoulders. It is far more noticeable if you watch the actual clip rather than a still.

I love how clear modern films are...I just wish they had the old school...feel. The anxiety setting in feeling where you don't know.

This Confirmes that the Thing is the first among us.
I don't have the hate for this movie that some people do although you can make the argument it was unnecessary because we already know what happened to the Norwegians and the Americans were kind of thrown in as an afterthought. But it does show me why practical effects in these types of movies is better than CGI for the most part. And why the 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing is such a classic.

"The Thing"(2011) is a good enough science fiction horror movie! This is a well made and decent Prequel!
I think we are ready for an upto date video game on this. The one for PS2 back when was awesome. With current tech and the right Dev team a new survival horror on this would be brilliant.

Interesting (or boring) piece of trivia, the signal heard by the Norwegians in the snowmobile at the start of the film sounds identical to the signal of the sister ship in the movie Sunshine.
I was just about to like the video, then I realised I’ve already watched it. Oh well, I’ll watch it again!
Such a good movie and the 1982 one too. They need to make a big budget version, maybe a sequel.
When the movie was nearing the end with the power out and kate alongside Sam walk down the hallway; flamethrower and axe in hand, it reminded me of a mix of resident evil and Anime Parasite.
When the thing replicates some more precise than just a shell.
It's surface appearance is human in the beginning and it's inner being is still alien and doesn't need to replicate human organs many would be useless. Then later was more intricate to hide itself in an early draft of the story as I understand? Good Video 😎
While I think the films heart was in the right place, I had two major problems with this prequel, 1 according to the 1982 John Carpenter film the Norwegians used thermite charges to uncover the alien ship and 2 the over use of CGI over the originally promised practical effects.
Love when movies get explained like this because with this information this movie jumps up in rating imo to 9/10 especially due to the connection with the original

Such a shame that all the practical effects were dumped at the last minute! The work that team did was Master Class! For those who haven't seen their work, there's some good videos on here showing them off. The all CGI decision was truly a huge gut punch to this movie!

Even though it’s a movie that can be summed up as “So that’s how those bodies got there”, there are some good moments. Even though it doesn’t hold a candle to the original
I tentatively found the assimilator's inability to imitate prosthetics, a red herring (wrt to screenings). Considering it hypothetically could put it back and maintain it.
Although some panned this film I feel it was done perfectly and set up the original completely. I have watched the 1982's thing right after this prequal and its like watching one 4hr movie! You could edit both these films together and show it to someone who has never seen either before and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference! Done brilliantly IMHO!
Along with the 2011 prequel the thing was going to have a sequel tv mini series.
I think there would have been a seen where the thing was not only on the main land but also disguise as a person that disappears in a crowd of busy people in New York city.
Far as sequel prequels go I would say this is not the worst, I always had more fear of the creatures shown in this movie even if the CGI was poor it made them move with frightening agility where the old movie feels like the creature is a more clumsy and usually stationary growth

Trivia: In _Who Goes There?, and its adaptations, the 1951 film The Thing From Another World_ and the 1982 remake we know as _The Thing, as well as the 2011 prequel of the same name, Sander Halvorson is very similar to Blair in the 1982 remake of TTFAW: Both were lead scientists, lobbied for the thawing of the titular creature, and both were revealed to be Things at the end, as well as being victims of explosions.
Poor Juliet must have ‘ bought it ‘ in the shower stall . That attack was not shown , but the blood and the tooth fillings that Kate would discover in the washroom must have been Juliet’s . One of those things - probably the one that killed and replicated Griggs - either followed Juliet into the washroom , or possibly it waited for her in there - cornered Juliet in there , and then it must have split or molted , with one piece reconstituting itself back into ‘ Griggs ‘ , the other piece assimilating and then replicating Juliet .

That "energy source" wasn't even in the original shot, it was supposed to be the dead pilot of the ship she was looking at but studio meddling ruined what could have been a great reveal among other things in the film.

They didn't explain it explicitly , but I appreciated how they avoided the goofy idea that people get " infected " and then slowly become a monster . Carpenter had this in his film , which is one reason that I was disappointed by his movie . The prequel , released in 2011, was a good picture , but it should have been a great horror film .
There was a subplot where the species that flew the saucer was different than The Thing. Kate was to have seen the corpses of them all over the place, and the main pilot where that ‘Tetris Power Supply’ was CGI’d over.
