This week, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron break down which four Sony Alpha cameras received new features via firmware update and, among those, which didn't get through that process without a few bumps in the road. Ricoh also announced a new GR III and it appears as though it will do anything to not release a GR IV. Tamron also brought its 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 Lens to Nikon Z this week, which has its own interesting ramifications, and the team then talks about photo printing and why you should do it.

Sorry for your loss, Jaron. I’m a beginner hobbyist photographer and the two things that have led to picking up a camera are wanting to have a connection with my “back-in-the-day photographer” father, and a desire to have meaningful art on my walls, so the segment about your dad really meant a lot to me. Cheers from WA.

33:29 What a beautiful discussion on the value of printing your photos. This is something I’ve been struggling with. I don’t think my photos are in a place where they are worth printing unless someone asks. I’m evolving so much as a photographer that I never feel “now” is the time to take a physical snapshot of my work.
Sorry for your loss, Jaron. Your father’s work is fantastic.

Jarron, sorry for your loss, and thank you for sharing this. It reminds me of how lucky I am to still have my dad, who is old but still fuctional.
He was a great photographer who shot for Jet Magazine along with the great Bill Jones.
He was also Paparazzi in LA for a time and I still have several of his negatives of Michael Jackson, Lee Majors, Bobby Womack, who he became good friend with, Greg Morris from Mission Impossible, Madonna, Prince and a host of others.
He hated that work, but it paid the bills when you got the shot. He went back to portrait photography until he could no longer walk on his own without a wheel chair.
He wasn't just a great photographer, but a great artist who spends his days painting and drawing.
I taught my son photography, and we started a photography, videography, and live stream business 8 years ago. I still own a Nikon F4.
Thank you for doing this, and I need to give him a call. Thank you, Jaron, for reminding me of what is important, and I will have to get these negatives printed.

Sorry for the loss of your father, Jaron. And thank you for showing us his work!
Last week, we also lost one of the greatest astrophotographers still so young - Alyn Wallace. He built a fantastic portfolio in his website, published probably the best book on landscape astrophotography "Photographing the night sky", worked with camera gear manufacturers on a star glow filter and with Move Shoot Move on their star tracker V-bracket and Z-bracket that hold Alyn's name. Alyn has a Ted Talk on light pollution and has hosted numerous astrophotography workshops. But most of us would probably have gotten to know Alyn by his UA-cam channel where he posted tutorials, gear reviews, vlogs of his photographic adventures under the night sky solo and with friends, and one of my favourite parts - his monthly series "What's in the night sky?". Alyn has inspired so many people to do astrophotography, and his legacy will continue long after his passing.
I commented this once, but I always thought it would be cool to have him as a guest on the podcast and just discuss briefly some of the modern techniques in this branch of photography.

The biggest thing about printing is that many people just aren't going to go through your computer or phone if you die. They may not even think about it, and they may not have the passwords. Odds are high that your loved ones will go through your prints and keep at least the ones they like. Odds are low digital only pictures survive very long after you go.

Regarding printing, I saw a TV show a long time ago, set in a world without electricity. One of the characters still carried her old smartphone with her decades later because it contained all her photos of her children. Her just sitting at the campfire watching her dead phone screen really messed me up, and it got me into printing my photos.

Also, thanks for the shout out for Mark Weir. I worked with Mark from when he joined Sony until my retirement in 2004. His 38 years put my meager 26 to shame. Actually, I don't recall he had any involvement with Walkman although he may have for a brief time. Mark was our Autosound (car stereo) guru for many years prior to his involvement with cameras. Hope you get him on the podcast.

I want to add that we seem to forget, because of the screens that we've been accustomed to view photos, that one of the most important aspects, of any work of art actually, is scale. The size that a photographer chooses to print a photograph is important. Either bigger or smaller, it's an artistic choise.

  • @TheCourtaud
    @TheCourtaud 2 місяці тому +1

There was a time I was always having my film photos scanned, then they would simply end up on a drive with a couple shared to social media. It lost the flavor fairly quickly and I just started having my photos printed. They may just be on 4x6 prints, but lucky for me, the art supply store sells frames for that size by the buttload for cheap. I started hanging my photos like we had when I was a kid and it gives me so much more satisfaction. I'm not sure the photos are any better, but the meaning is so much greater when they are photos I care for that I am sharing with my family.
I'm sorry for your loss, Jaron. I'm glad your father chose a means of immortalizing himself through his artistic gifts. The memories will always be in your memory, but his photos are a near-constant reminder to think of him, the art he loved, and his relationship with you.

Jaron, sorry for your loss. My Dad got me into photography. Dad learned photography on a Pentax K1000 and he has told me that he did some of his own darkroom work back in the day. I got my start in photography using a point and shoot film camera then a digicam. But really got into it when Dad gave me his Nikon D3200 Costco kit (came with multiple lenses). I got good enough to take engagement photos of my brother and his now wife on our vacation back home in Singapore. I've since upgraded to an X-T10 handed down from Dad when he upgraded to an X-T30. Dad gave me his X-T30 that he broke the joystick and I just got it back last week; he didn't want to use a repaired camera, so I took it. Dad got an X-T30II to replace the X-T30II. At Dad's house, he has he has lots of prints and canvases on his upstairs walls of his artsy photos and some family photos he has taken. I wish I could take photos as good as Dad. Maybe one day. I'm only 33 and have the benign shakes, so IBIS is mandatory on my next camera.

My parents have been going through old photos lately and there’s so many prints that I totally forgot about, so many places that we forgot we visited. My only opposition to printing my own photos is that I hate framing them - if Canon bring out a printer that shoves it into a wooden frame automatically then I’d be 100% on board 😆

It's not a patch on a proper enlarger, but it is *tiny*, and perfectly good for B&W (I've done a bit of colour with it, it's not the best, but that's not really my thing anyway). My whole darkroom setup, trays etc, all fits in a box under a chair in my office. Darkroom printing really can be a magical process. The time it takes, and the focus you have on your image over that time really does immerse you in the image and the process.

My sincere condolences to Jaron and his family on the passing of their father. His keen photographic eye captured and shared memories that were important to him. Your segment on printing your photographs really resonated with me as a film negative or digital image is not a photograph until it is physically printed. The photographer is only half the equation as the printer completes the work to be seen. Many of the great street photographers and photojournalists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Chim, William Klein, Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau, and Edouard Boubat sent their work to be printed by master printers such as Voja Mitrovic at PICTO Photographic Laboratory in Paris.

My a7s III updates (on four different units) have been great. Pain in the ass to get everything installed (abandoned trying on my apple silicon and dug out a pc). But honestly, a great firmware update, and one of my a7s III’s that used to just bug out and switch photo mode and back (effectively ending your recording) hasn’t done it since the update. So fingers crossed on that. The big features are nice, but the at a glance primary menu, the added touch screen functionality, the addition of focus assist, these features flew under the radar but make a world of difference on the job.

Jaron, im so sorry for your loss. That was such a lovely piece in honour of your father.
    Dear Jordan,
I am writing to express my concern about your apparent dislike for ravens and Corvids. These highly intelligent and fascinating birds play a vital role in our ecosystem and have been revered in many cultures throughout history.
I urge you to reconsider your position and take a moment to appreciate their unique qualities, such as their remarkable problem-solving skills. By embracing different perspectives, we can gain a more profound understanding of the world around us.
I hope you will take my request seriously and give these incredible birds the appreciation they deserve.

1:09:30 I think Chris is talking more about the Panasonic TZ cameras (they may have slightly different name in US) - the TZ80 or 90 with a small sensor and longer zoom, or the TZ100 and TZ200 with a 1" sensor and about 200mm ish, if memory serves
Edit: Ah Jordan called it, the ZS cameras

Zoom m3 mictrak might be a good option for the person looking for stereo mic that you can adjust what angle you are getting sound from. If you record on the device you get 32 bit audio and the ability to change the pickup afterwards up to 120 degrees. I haven't used it personally but the reviews are pretty positive.

For color, a large Giclee print is really good as long as you pick the right paper finish for the image. MPIX and other online printing companies offer it at a higher cost than standard prints. I have Giclee prints up to 30x40” which is perfect for GFX 100s images… 👍🏻

Sorry to hear about your father Jaron. My dad always had a 35mm camera by his side growing up and I have so many photo albums that he left me when he passed. He definitely passed his interest in photos to me. As far as where to get your camera serviced, there's a local camera shop here in Austin, Precision Camera, that services and repairs cameras. They might be worth calling to see if they can do it. Make sure to call the one in Austin, apparently there's another company I think in New Jersey with the same or similar name. Good luck and hope you get it fixed!

What I think is interesting is how unpopular the new Ricoh is, on their Instagram its like 90% people complaining its not a mark 4 or saying the new filter is a gimmick.

I really don’t understand why they made it, to be honest. What does it add to the lineup? It’s kind of a strange thing to make a full camera release for.

I make a blurb book every year of that year's favourite pics. Quality is great, even in the cheaper more zine-like trade books. You can get a few hundred pics in.We keep them in the front room and look through them often.

I do enjoy the look of a subtle pro mist filter recently. But I think they are better in the screw on version. And I do think that Ricoh should go for a GR VIII directly.

Whereas the camera is merely the recording device, the choice of lens can already have a great artistic impact. Or an impact on what you even can see and shoot.
So I wouldn’t say that the artistry begins in the development stage - it does begin when you click the shutter.
But you complete it in the development process.
Jaron, my condolences with the loss of your father.

I wonder if Ricoh and Fuji source their nd filters from the same place. If so, maybe the huge demand for the x100vi was causing production delays in the gr iii.

Re: Hate for crows as well as ravens. A side bit of science here.
Several years ago the Boston road commission noted huge number of dead crows, hit by vehicles, along the highways. An investigation done by engineers examining tire tracks and paint colors on the crows found that just over 98% of them had been hit by trucks, so fewer than 1% by cars. Biologists from Harvard were brought in to study the reason: it was quickly found that crows gathered along highway areas where roadkill was common, and that they often left what were called "spotter crows" on nearby signs. These spotters would alert the crows down on the road to approaching traffic. Unfortunately (for the crows), while the spotter crows in Boston were fantastic at calling out "CAW", they were absolutely abysmal at calling out "TRUCK"
