Never heard of Russ but he is one of the most melodic flatpickers I have ever heard, thank you sir!
Yes, he's brilliant. Gorgeous work. Check out his work on the Transatlantic Sessions. - Steve
Lots of great playing and insight on musicianship, technique, and practicing. Thank you for keeping these old videos available!
During Corona-crisis I transcribed and learned his version of "Big Sciota" - that was hard work :-) I love that CD "Skip, Hop & Wobble" with Edgar Meyer and Jerry Douglas. One of my finest Bluegrass / Crossover-albums. Thank you, Mr. Barenberg :-)
Yes, brilliant work. - Steve
Killer album
What an awesome musician -- Russ is so, so underrated, I think. His first (and best) album, Cowboy Calypso, should be in every flatpicker's home. Scrumptious.
Russ is one of the best, and I am amazed how much he influenced my style of playing, just through some of his instruction cassettes in the early 90s. What a player!
Is it me are does he have extreme long feet
Russ, you're a very modest person, you forget to mention that you were part of the mythical bluegrass band Country Cooking with Tony Trishka and Andy Statman in the mid seventies.
The album Barrel of Fun has never been equalled in the history i of bluegrass in terms of inventiveness and musical skills Your solos are just incredible and I saw you playing in Paris with that band ...I couldn't get over your mastery of the guitar on stage and the big sound you had .....
You're a legend Russ to me !
As big as Doc Watson ! and definitely very musical in every way...I enjoy your CDs very much.
Thanks for your beautiful music !
Pascal from France
I'm bluegrass mandolin and guitar player .
Terrific guest guitarist...thanx.
love learning new stuff Steve.
hello from Ottawa Ontario Canada.
That guitar has such a distinctive sound! I can hear the same tone here that I here on Russ's records. This is such a great interview. I'm in the process of killing myself learning the blazing fast bluegrass licks and Mr. Barenberg has sucker punched me into remembering beauty and melody in music are more important. He has such a peaceful way of playing and writing music.
Same just happened to me. I needed that
As Russ has a writing background, he really should write a biography. For example, just his thoughts and memories of his time playing on the tv show "The Transatlantic Sessions" would be fabulous...apart from all his other music adventures. It amazes me to think that I've been following Russ's music for 50yrs! Those " Country Cooking" albums really blew my mind
"The Welcome" sounds inspired by Wildwood Flower. Beautiful piece and musicianship.
It was my honor and pleasure to know Russ, and his brother David, back in 1972-75, in Ithaca, during the days of his first band, Country Cooking, with Peter Wernick and Tony Trischka on banjo. Cover charge was $1 at a local saloon. Priceless. In the prologue to my Churchill book I gave a nod to Russ's "The Drummers of England", an inside reference. And a beautiful tune, which captures the spirit of Englishmen. Russ is, for my money, the most melodic flatpicker of our time.
Paul Reid I heartily agree. Russ has a quality of his playing that stirs my emotions. Difficult to describe but uniquely tangible in his playing. It's been a joy getting to know him and work with him. - Steve Krenz
Found Russ because he played on Steve Martins new album the crow and wanted to check him out! glad i did!
Nice work guys! Had a chance to pick some with Russ at his home and I also worked at the Saturn plant in Spring Hill where I lived. I now live in Prague, Czech Republic.
I used to watch a BBC TV music series called Transatlantic Sessions around the mid 90s. I would write down all the names of the musicians at the end of each show and try to find the music in the local record stores. Russ was one of those musicians on the BBC series who introduced me to a world of folk and roots music nearly 30 years ago ! Thanks Russ.
Great playing Russ. Lovely.
I took lessons from Russ way back in Cambridge at the Music Emporium. Great guy, great player!
So did I!
He is a wonderful man. Did you ever see him play with “Laughing Hands”?
beautiful playing and composition, very emotional
Excellent interview and lesson. Thanks for that.
Russ is great!
First saw him on the Atlantic sessions with Iris De ment (Let the mystery be) and Emmy Lou Harris (Wheel of Love) and various other tracks through the Atlantic Sessions series and once I found out his name landed here via google and YT. So impressed by his playing and the tone of that guitar, wow.
Is his feet as long in real life. They look like clown shoes in this video are is it my eyes
Great stuff, thanks for upload
His feel is damn solid
That's really good guitaring 😎👍
Does he also play reels and jigs or Breton tunes?
Glad to finally discover a guitar player with a deep pretty and rich sound
He's on some of Rodney Miller's albums!
@@Dreadnotster Thanks a lot :)
i ve bee at work shop 's Russ in Italy and he is flaticker poet
Yes, a true artist. Thanks for being part of our guitar family. - Steve
thx too
This is absolutely great, I love these videos and I'm a huge fan of Russ' incredible music. I was wondering, is it possible to get links to the photos of the pedals as mentioned early on in the video? Thank you, Alex :)
Alex Farran I'm not sure if we took pictures of them. But I'll check. We also did an artist interview with Russ at Gibson.com. You can see that here... www2.gibson.com/Lessons/Skills-House/Interviews/2011/Russ-Barenberg-Part-1.aspx
I think the interviewer should gather a little more information about the guests prior to interviewing.....he either didn't know or just blew right by Russ's work in the 70's and early 80's and in particular his role in Fiddle Fever, Jay Ungar's band from upstate New York....Russ is one of the most listened to players in the world when one considers his playing on Ungar's classic Ashokan Farwell, the linchpin of the soundtrack to Ken Burn's widely acclaimed 'Civil War' PBS epic.....let alone the other great playing on the Fiddle Fever albums....get with it, Nashville!!!
I use Wegen picks. they're great.
Oh, do ya?
Masterful
It would be nice to know the kind of pick he's using because the pick thickness etc. got a big influence on any picking style,
also the string gage.
If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure Russ plays a Wegen pick.www.wegenpicks.com/
I think he said a wegen m100 pick, that it is a mandolin pick. He said light gauge. I forget the brand, starts with a P - like Pierce or something like that.
Fishman Aura Spectrum DI or LR Baggs Venue DI. Thoughts? Preferences?
Reminds me of Norman Blake.
Why does Russ have that big piece added to his shoe?
Do you know which strings and gauges he is using?
I can’t find the opening song, The Welcome on Spotify. Did I hear the title correctly?
Yes, you’re correct. He said he hasn’t recorded it though unfortunately.
@@alexmcmurtrieSits thank you
Don’t this fellow have extra long feet

That Epiphone sounded pretty crappy after hearing those Gibsons. It should have really gone to a program for under privilege kids. Maybe it will; if I won it that's exactly where it would go.
When at last is such a beautiful song.
This was an amazing show. Thank you. I will be rewatching this one for sure.
