I get engrossed in these. Can someone explain what these dances are for? Were they done before fighting or for their village? The complex tattoos that they have and the meaning of the designs and where they are placed on the body just amazes me.

This is what is known as a whakaeke, or an ascendance. This was performed at 1992 National Haka Championships.
The whakaeke is the entry piece a kapa haka (haka troupe) perform when they ascend onto the stage to perform their set.
This particular whakaeke tells the story of Houmai-Tawhiti, the father of Tamatekapua, the captain of the Te Arawa voyager vessel.
His descendants populate the Bay of Plenty and Taupo regions of NZ.

the haka was done before a battle to scare approaching war armies and boost the adrenaline of the warriors for higher chances of winning. poking out the tongue was used by many of the tribes as a threat which means literally "i will kill you and eat you". not all tribes ate people tho, my tribe stopped eating people some time after the british signed a treaty with us and we stopped poking out the tongue, but they went against that treaty and kidnapped our tribes chief and imprisoned him until he agreed to give over millions and millions of acres of land around our tribe owned mountain which was exchanged for a ichy blankey, the british then lied about it and said we gifted the mountains and all that land to them for a fkn blanket. sorry i got lost there for a second,Maori
