Plus I liked to hear him full of joy that spilled out in laughter so easily. And he was too funny "You must respect the glass" when he was sharing how come the restroom door didn't close all the way in the big house. Glad to see you all enjoying your life one with another; that's what family is all about ; )
@Paul Deland Because architecture is an art, and people devote their lives to studying, designing, experimenting, and building beautiful places for people to live. I think you don't understand how much work is involved in designing architecture, or even becoming an architect itself. Everything is very complex to figure out, because every project has a new site with its own unique conditions. The reason why some architecture is so easy to understand, is that an architect put in the hours to design it to read clearly successfully .
That bathroom door is the best metaphor for Apple, ever. It’s a bathroom door, it doesn’t close completely but it was designed like that and if you want to close the door completely, you’re using the door wrong. 😅
Their guests are better off just going into the woods instead of using that washroom! How embarrassing when there are people in the living room or worse cooking in the kitchen...
I love how “respecting the glass walls“ ended up disrespecting the family-member's need for privacy. That's one of those design decisions where his alarm bells should have been going off telling him to definately clear this one with his wife!
It would not have to be that expensive - the house, that is. It just not had to be cost effective in the least because he's a pretentious, vastly overpayed apple bubble dweller able to afford anything.
I love the way they stayed on the land to learn how it felt and how the elements affected them. I've been doing the same thing at my Place, and it was the best decision. I love the olive tree living room. Great video! Thank you!
I'm obsessed with this house. It's utterly simple, warm, and beautiful. The galvanized stairs connecting the two units breathe ergonomic elegance. The corten steel disappears into the landscape. The swimming pool provides much needed relief from the harsh sun and stone. Upon first glance this home looks like it's made from two shipping containers but with patience the details reveal themselves. The line between house and nature are blurred. Most importantly, I love this family. You could tell they are genuinely good people. All the best to them.
LOL. GOOD FAMILY? THEY DON'T ALLOW THE DOG IN THE HOUSE! How SLIPPERY is METAL when it RAINS? Definitely NOT ERGONOMIC ELEGANCE when the steps are not spaced for a human gait!! How ERGONOMICALLY ELEGANT is climbing over doors to get in and out of the son's bed everyday, or to make it? NOTHING IN NATURE IS SQUARE!! NOTHING. NATURE does not create squares of any kind. The House Design is Not Nature Harmonic!!
@@contactjoy4140 You're a hoot, Joy! I would love to meet you someday. You're obsessed with rain and now the son's bed! Is the sky falling? An existential crisis, perhaps? "....the glass wall is sacred.." The bathroom is not shut my man. Now I understand where Apple's fluff comes from - its just an extension of an in-house conversation that the people there have genuinely bought into. Reminds me of Jobs "You're holding the phone wrong" when the product didnt work properly. My dad would correctly say, "Bullshit baffles brains". I still like the vast majority of the house though and I do love the simplicity of the idea.
I agree with "the whole world can look in but you cant see them when inside" reality. The opaque Japanese sliding doors are far superior imo. I think the day time advantages to glass are there, but some privacy as you mention when on the john/ in the shower etc are good things to have. I guess, to each their own .
This is a beautiful home. I like how he explained all the different materials he used, I definitely learned a thing or two from this video. Very inspiring. This guys idea about how a home can be like a piece of art is great. If I ever make enough money to do something like this I’m doing it.
it's actually fairly doable. Pre fab is typically cheaper than construction. The biggest expense is obviously the land. I'm sure that particular piece of land in Sonora s worth a jillion dollars. But no everyone needs to live on a cliff in CA.
How about everyone in the comments just calms down?? Yes, you could say he is just acting minimalistic when thats clearly not the case, but thats besides the point... the house looks really nice and seems very functional for a vacation home And yes, they could have tried getting the house to be more off grid/eco friendly etc, but they didnt and you shouldnt complain just because you wouldve liked it to be that way
Kristen, you do such nice work! Love how you let the owners tell their own story. I'm just sure that the "thumbs downs" you get are someone's opinion of the house, NOT your excellent videos.
Builds a pool only for aesthetics, “It’s almost more of a reflecting pool than it is a swimming pool”. Self proclaimed minimalist “Less is more”. Not to mention this is just his weekend house. If only the average American could afford to cosplay as a minimalist.
The simplicity of it is just amazing. And from inside it frames the entire view of the valley. Truly they had to camp out there to find the ideal spot.
Yeah...I agree. I laughed at his comment of being "respectful to the glass." Just be honest, your bathroom door doesn't fucking close and it's weird for everyone around.
@C j3 LOL yeah, it's obvious that money isn't their problem....It reminds me of a Chinese electronics storefront poster advertising a phone, with a snide comment saying "Because you have more money than sense". I think this is a pretty appropriate phrase here lol.
I love how most of the time there is one of the owners who is super immersed in the design and construction of the home and the other one is like “yeah, we've got walls and a roof and this is where we cook and eat ...“
This Combination of containers on the property with the views was absolutely enjoyable to see. I would love to have that house set up, good luck with on going projects.
I’ve been reading the comments and I see so much hate in the comments from most of the people ( don’t envy don’t judge, be better, make better) personally I loved de design and I think Beauty it’s so relative to each person the impact on the landscape is minimal with this right material selection, that the house it’s not self sustainable doesn’t meen that is not a good project this guy is an Arquitect not an engineer you can end up also with a horrible nonsense eyesoring self sustainable house
Simplicity is a tent and stove,a stream for drinking and bathing in.A small vegetable garden,a solar panel and going to sleep when the sun goes down and waking to the dawn chorus of nature.I dont want to even think about how much this project cost.Americans have a particularly skewed version of what simple living is.But you dont have to go far in this world to see what cinder blocks and tin roofs feel like.

Your comments reeks of toxic cynicism and envy. And of course, you've obviously completely missed the point behind minimalism. They have solar heating for the pool, house is a passive design, not sure they want off grid, and not sure that off grid is the lightest we can be on the land.
Edit: I wrote below before he said "when we leave at the end of the weekend." Didn't realize this was a vacation home. Still think it's a beautiful property, but much less appealing. Now that I think about the maintenance that must go into the unit (how many hours go into digging crap out of that pool? What machine does he have to make and maintain that "trail?" When he talked about "less is more" after walking across a $10M property I felt like telling him to fuck off. Previous: I appreciate this family's commitment to living small. A lot of commenters are dissing them for not doing solar etc., but considering the McMansion they could have built, I think this is a beautiful place that positively influences their lives. Think for a minute -they lived in a tent for a year and were talking about having their kid live on a pullout couch for 2 years after building the place. That's how committed they are. Imagine the effect on society if just 10% of the people lived in spaces that were this open to nature.
I wonder what they mean when they say they lived in a tent for a year. Does that mean they lived in a tent when they went up there when they had time on a weekend? Do you really think that they lived for one full year intense on that property without going to their other houses?
he's an architect so of course he is going to sweat the details and look for the join that is seamless and efficient: that is what I would expect and want from him. For an apple architect I think they are humble: yes the house isn't cheap and the pool is amazing, but compared to what he could have done with this money I think they are very grounded as a family and live simply. I would love a house like this and possibly another room as a work room atelier..... if and when I retire somewhere where I can be warm .... like Majorca lol....
The reason we are currently building low income housing in Sonoma county .1 out 2 homes is a vacation home or air Bnb rental .Nothing humble about owning a home in SF and a playhouse in Sonoma were an acre cost a Million or more. Most blue collar workers are commuting into Sonoma because affordable housing just isn't available .
A thought just occurred to me why I might be becoming more and more compelled to living within a smaller, con/restricted area.. Perhaps at my age, mid-40's, nostalgia has become more prevalent in my thoughts.. I close my eyes and can almost see, hear, and even smell my old 6'x2.5' childhood bedroom closet which my grandpa helped me empty and clean to create my own "Nintendo tournament training area" ;) We crammed some thick blankets along the floor and put one of those large corduroy stuffed back pillows against one wall and a small TV on a stand with shelving on the opposite wall. I probably spent more time in that closet than I did in school ;p
1. It would ruin his design. 2. Electric solar really only makes sense in most places if there are good government subsidies or you can use all the power yourself.
Casper Unnerup government subsidies! Oh ffs! Nothings free these days and if you want a tiny elec bill it makes sense. It will pay for its self very quickly. Greedy people out there want money back from putting into the grid and because they think they should get more that’s on offer, they decide against it. And im pretty sure this house will be easily to rebuild after wildfire, hopefully this family isnt there during the time.
I don't call it brilliant when he had to add another building because there was not enough room for the kid, as well as a shed that has to store the real fridge. Plus there is not enough privacy. I'm sure they have people visit them there but there really is not enough room to accommodate them inside the house if they are sleeping over. The land and views are gorgeous and the house (compound) is nice but not really as functional as it could be.

It was interesting that his main preoccupation seemed to be shutting the doors and getting away from people in the space.
@@TimH123 The second I realized there was a teenager living in the house, my perspective on this place shifted. What kind of masochist designs their own home and then doesn't give their teenage boy any privacy?
Revisiting this episode during the covid 19 thing. This is one of my favorites. Stay safe everyone 💚
Loved his enthusiasm for his new house, hey I feel you bud, I'd be that excited too!! What a view & what a simple & sweet home.
Plus I liked to hear him full of joy that spilled out in laughter so easily. And he was too funny "You must respect the glass" when he was sharing how come the restroom door didn't close all the way in the big house.
His wife & son all seemed like genuinely nice, down to earth, humble, simple people. Honestly it was nice to hear them all laugh together, so much love going around.
Seriously this is what people are missing, love, joy and laughter. For me it's a prerequisite, it's what makes life worth living.
Well all in all loved this home and it's inhabitants. Glad to see you all enjoying your life one with another; that's what family is all about ; )
His explanations are artsier than the actual building.
Bullshitting is important in the world of selling overpriced shit.
K Gifford yeah he doesn’t mind repeating himself. Something I noticed about successful people. They repeat and repeat.
*Lol!*
Actually
Sounds like what a pimp would tell his Hoe's...doublespeak and game.
Haha, yeah that is where I lost it.
let's not forget about the headphone jack.
For someone who works with Apple, his house is full of windows. 😂
😂😂😂 SMH
Underrated comment 😂💀
You’re so clever! Did you read the first comment or did you come up with that joke all by yourself??! Goof
@Ryota Arai - Funny but the guy is actually an architect who builds/designs Apple stores and has nothing to do w/the actual design of iPhones lol
Oh...
Small, light & hugely expensive - just like Apple products!
Minimalism is maximally expensive.
Yup.
@@sharondymond Yup.
And probably build in China...
Thank you!
I love the Family feeling, too.
Definitely a good idea to learn the layout, with wind, and sun ect.
Living in a tent is far from amazing
I love this! So well thought out. So flexible. Fits so well in its space. Married to the landscape.
Not having the toilet door go all the way must be the "courage" that Apple talked about when they removed the headphone jack.
haha well said!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mama still holding a grudge with that lol
Yeah he lost me on that. Turned from a cool visionary to an autocrat at that moment.
ROTFLMAO!!!
yall are trippin this is the perfect getaway house in so many ways. utterly remarkable!
Getaway house, I could live in it for the rest of my life.....😂
One of the best designs! Agree that simplicity requires abstract thinking, longer and more planning.
The bigger story here is a person working from Apple managed a good life balance between family and work. Well done.
When Frank Stella came out with his black striped paintings, everyone said it looked like wallpaper. Like art, this house is ahead of its time. For the rest of the world, there's the Property Brothers.
I just LOVE this home! The location at the base of the hill is perfect too. Great presentation from the homeowner explaining all of the details. I would be interested in the final price.
I also would be interested in final price. 2 older person's, ( retired ) looking to downsize and have always loved Northern Cali. Permitting ? Price ,? Please !❤️ Home at 8:47 really interested me .
Absolutely beautiful.
I've seen so many videos of 'luxury mansions' that were utterly horrendous.
This one, is closer to how I want to live.
Amen, sister.
I loved watching this video. I loved watching him being sincerely happy about the design and explaining every nook and cranny of the house. Thank you
*guy pushes glass doors around for 30 minutes straight*

Hah! LOVE those doors! Especially silly during an earthquake!!!
This is a beautiful home. I like how he explained all the different materials he used, I definitely learned a thing or two from this video. Very inspiring. This guys idea about how a home can be like a piece of art is great. If I ever make enough money to do something like this I’m doing it.
Fabulous Design.Would be excellent for a few container's.16' (bedroom & can)across two 20's (kitchen/den) & a pair of 20'ers for bedroom
it's actually fairly doable. Pre fab is typically cheaper than construction. The biggest expense is obviously the land. I'm sure that particular piece of land in Sonora s worth a jillion dollars. But no everyone needs to live on a cliff in CA.
How about everyone in the comments just calms down??
Yes, you could say he is just acting minimalistic when thats clearly not the case, but thats besides the point... the house looks really nice and seems very functional for a vacation home
And yes, they could have tried getting the house to be more off grid/eco friendly etc, but they didnt and you shouldnt complain just because you wouldve liked it to be that way
Kristen, you do such nice work!
"Cosplay as a minimalist"
Spot on sir, spot on.
Exactly. He's really pleased with himself too, isn't he? Yuck.
Oooooh this being a weekend house explains why the house is so impractical. No way you can live there all year round.
Nesta M I could live there easily full time!
Yeah, it is easy to have a home like that when you only use it for weekends in the summer in California. It is unusable in colder weather.
This house and this family really made my day. There actually are healthy, happy, normal humans living on this planet. :)
Get out of your cave much?
How do you slam the door when you're angry?
you forcefully but slowly *slide* the huge-ass door.
I don’t think there’s much reason to get angry when you’re living like this!
You begin to slam it and then you softly close it.
guess he kicks the dog
Slam the wardrobe door.
The simplicity of it is just amazing. And from inside it frames the entire view of the valley. Truly they had to camp out there to find the ideal spot.
Fantastic! I learned so much on this and it gave me so many ideas. The Siegels explained this so well.
All nice! However poor kid that has to hear and smell everybody doing their business while lying in his bed.
rannug77 no kidding. The kid has to lay in bed listening to the other two poop and pee.
duh, parents have the other house
Imagine if someone in the family gets sick in the stomach... 🤢🤮💩
Stunning place -- great use of space and looks easy to keep clean. I loved the small details like the built-in nightstands.
This Combination of containers on the property with the views was absolutely enjoyable to see. I would love to have that house set up, good luck with on going projects.

For me, this would be a fantastic primary home, so I hope they plan on retiring here one day.
I love the garden and orchard.
I really enjoy watching this, also this house is amazing.
would have been nice to see some footage of the house at night
I’ve been reading the comments and I see so much hate in the comments from most of the people ( don’t envy don’t judge, be better, make better) personally I loved de design and I think Beauty it’s so relative to each person the impact on the landscape is minimal with this right material selection, that the house it’s not self sustainable doesn’t meen that is not a good project this guy is an Arquitect not an engineer you can end up also with a horrible nonsense eyesoring self sustainable house
I love the house too but I think the comments are hilarious (without hate!).
Does it come with the headphone jack though.
Thank you for showing these gems, Kirsten! Always so much fun watching it!
Simplicity is a tent and stove,a stream for drinking and bathing in.A small vegetable garden,a solar panel and going to sleep when the sun goes down and waking to the dawn chorus of nature.I dont want to even think about how much this project cost.Americans have a particularly skewed version of what simple living is.But you dont have to go far in this world to see what cinder blocks and tin roofs feel like.
not americans just rich americans
Brilliant, home of the future, when people finally return to a simpler life with nature. Love this!

Melissa Castle unfortunately that “simple” house is over a million bucks. So for the 1% it’s nice
WTF? This is for the 1% Are you crazy? Affordable housing in this world is critical for the majority of humanity. This is not! If you even care about decent housing people on this planet. We are officially the lowest species in the universe..
I love this. I will have this in a few years. God willing. Lovely family. They all seem so relaxed and happy! Thanks for sharing and giving me the idea for my own beautiful home!💚💙💜
Kristen, Ive watched this about 20 times at the least. Im a woodworker with a design build degree and my interest lies in smaller spaces and i cannot think of a place that better exemplifies minimalism, simplicity and high design.
really? that's kinda sad, you should spend some time look around more.
Daniel" AND, a complete lack of personality and imagination. I'm very much for minimalism (stop buying so much crap and get rid of all the crap you own), but if your home looks like an Airbnb, I think you've taken it too far. What happened to showing our personality through the way you live, through your home? People who want to hide their personality by living such an extreme minilimist lifestyle worry me. Makes me wonder if they're serial killers who want to leave no clues around.
; )
@@arx754 By your reasoning, Ed Gein must not have been a serial killer for openly displaying his personality through his human-derived decorative pieces and being the opposite of a minimalist, more akin to a hoarder; oh, but wait--he *was* a serial killer, which goes to show the absurdity of your reasoning. Your comments reeks of toxic cynicism and envy. And of course, you've obviously completely missed the point behind minimalism. It's analogous to Jeet Kune Do---discarding that which is not useful or needed. That in and of itself it an expression of personality. I empathise with people who appreciate simplicity. However, lacking empathy, not personality, is the hallmark trait of serial killers, which you've just bungled. You've given yourself away. :P

Thank you for sharing such an inspirational getaway home, so much learn from this design!
Great job guys!
Beautiful idea, lovely family! Great Job, I take away a lot from this design!
This was really quite the Portlandia skit! A bit on the long side but Fred really embraced this character "BJ".
I love this! I think it’s incredible! And the garden is a dream!
Missed opportunities: No solar panels, no vertical axis wind turbines, no water gathering, and no energy or water storage.
it's burningmanmike I think he mentioned a water tank toward end of video after talking about the garden.
The most important, there is no Septic tank and no Garbage degradation.
That means they are going to shit and release the chemical wasted water directly to the mountain.
What a wonderful idea to move to a such nice place to ruin the environment!
Yeah it doesn't work well but it does look good. That's Apple for ya!
They have solar heating for the pool, house is a passive design, not sure they want off grid, and not sure that off grid is the lightest we can be on the land.
They mentioned the septic system was installed with the shed shown in the beginning. 6:25
They don't care about the maintenance they don't have to do it....
Agreed 100%.
Josh Wilson $10 million? You’re not very familiar with land prices in Sonoma🙄
They have another house and drive back and forth every weekend. Not really living lightly.
I wonder what they mean when they say they lived in a tent for a year. Does that mean they lived in a tent when they went up there when they had time on a weekend? Do you really think that they lived for one full year intense on that property without going to their other houses?
CLEVER! No air conditioning! I already liked it!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

he's an architect so of course he is going to sweat the details and look for the join that is seamless and efficient: that is what I would expect and want from him.
Loveit. Lol.

They hv two houses...the regular one is in city
The reason we are currently building low income housing in Sonoma county .1 out 2 homes is a vacation home or air Bnb rental .Nothing humble about owning a home in SF and a playhouse in Sonoma were an acre cost a Million or more. Most blue collar workers are commuting into Sonoma because affordable housing just isn't available .
Beautiful home, love the way he explain in detail each part of the house.
I love many different styles from traditional to contemporary. This is absolutely to die for, but the site makes it magical
Why not put a solar panel on the rooftop? Bet with all that clear space you can cut back on electricity costs. 🤔
Jade Lee don't think cost is a problem for this family at their weekend home
1. It would ruin his design.
2. Electric solar really only makes sense in most places if there are good government subsidies or you can use all the power yourself.
There are other ways to make electricity with all that land.
Casper Unnerup government subsidies! Oh ffs! Nothings free these days and if you want a tiny elec bill it makes sense. It will pay for its self very quickly. Greedy people out there want money back from putting into the grid and because they think they should get more that’s on offer, they decide against it. Then complain that their elec bill has gone up 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
It could be fully off grid with solar panels, a wanter tank, and a composting toilet.

One of the beautiful place with minimal architecture. Will be a great memory for the kids and grandkids who grew here and will never go far 👍 loved it
As an architect myself, I say this is brilliant.
Nice, yes. Brilliant, far from it.
Fred Flintstone Only architect find it is nice. I dont want to call you stupid, but havent the school taught you guys to build an eco-friendly house than just a stunning look garbage can? And im pretty sure this house will be easily to rebuild after wildfire, hopefully this family isnt there during the time.
I don't call it brilliant when he had to add another building because there was not enough room for the kid, as well as a shed that has to store the real fridge. Plus there is not enough privacy. I'm sure they have people visit them there but there really is not enough room to accommodate them inside the house if they are sleeping over. The land and views are gorgeous and the house (compound) is nice but not really as functional as it could be.
If the architect thinks of something more creative and unique as well as functional then it will be brilliant!
Fred, you live in a cave what do you know about architecture?
Great video and a very beautiful and inspiring home. Thanks for sharing!
Love this design and explanation. The more I watched (and I watched until the end, which is unusual for me) the more I could feel the space and nature. Wonderful.
