- A woman abandons her newborn son along with a note for the finder. The Tramp stumbles upon the child and though initially reluctant, takes him in and raises him as his own.
The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama film written, produced, directed and starring Charlie Chaplin, and features Jackie Coogan as his foundling baby, adopted son and sidekick. This was Chaplin's first full-length film as a director (he had been a co-star in 1914's Tillie's Punctured Romance). It was a huge success, and was the second-highest-grossing film in 1921, behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In 2011, The Kid was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The gifted and adorable young actor playing the title character here was Jackie Coogan. His parents were well-known Vaudeville performers, and the boy himself had been performing since the age of 18 months. This film made little Jackie the first child movie star, a global sensation.
Years later, when Jackie was old enough to collect the millions that were supposed to be held in trust for him, it was gone... his parents (mom and stepfather, bio dad had since passed) had spent nearly all of it. He sued them, which eventually led to Coogan's Law in California. Basically, it safeguards the earnings of underage actors, to make sure their futures are protected. Coogan's Law is still in force, to this day.
The other role which Coogan is even more famous for in later years, believe it or not, is Uncle Fester in the original "Addams Family" TV series from the 60s. He was the blueprint from which all portrayals of that character since then have been based.
Very informative. Thanks
I thought his mother and step-father did him dirty by stealing his money!
@@melissacooper4282 they absolutely did.
Thank you very much. It adds value to the movie. I am 72 years old and I cried when I was watching it. Great movie and by today's standard. Thank you once again
@@bassam5714 you're so welcome!
Watching Charlie Chaplin movies till now and more.. He is super star for me. Thank you Mr Charlie
me too Thanks for he was a actor humorous of geniuses love Charlie for ever
No one can replace him... Rest in peace charlie....
Action speaks louder than ‘words’. ❤️❤️❤️
Jackie Coogan who would later go on to play Uncle Fester, thank you Charlie for making him a star.
THAT'S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!🤩😊
I can’t help but notice how great young Jackie Coogan’s acting skills were. At such a young age, his acting was so natural especially during those emotional scenes. A 5 year old with an acting skill like that? What a rare gem that’s for sure.
It is emotional, comedy, run&fight all thing are here salute to Mr. Charlie Chaplin
i tear up at 13:05 when the lady asked chaplin, is the baby his and he surely nodded his head like he really committed to take care and raise the baby the moment he read the letter awww😢
When I first saw this on, The Movie classics channel years ago, I laughed, I teared up, and just loved Charlie C's and young, Jackie Coogans performance. I've seen his other movies too. He was so clever and had super agility. A comic genius. He also wrote the song, "Smile" a lovely heartwarming old song, that I thought, "Nat King Cole" sang it the best. Love his voice.
I didn't realize that Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this film. It's quite amazing, especially considering that it was made in 1921. I remember watching Chalie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and the Keystone Cops when I was younger and thought they were silly. I appreciate the effort it took to put something like this together given the film was 35mm. Later came 16mm in 1923 and then 8mm about a decade later (according to a Google search.)
We Are Miss Charlie Chaplin😭💔
always depicting life as it was, and bringing social issues into the forefront in his films long before it became fashionable to do so. charlie was a visionary, a comic genius and a brilliant story teller.
Grazie grande Maestro!
I’m watching this 101 years later. In comparison that’s not a long time… but think about it. These actors, Chaplin too, they all lived to see World War II. Not long after that event black people protested for their rights and Martin Luther king jr gave his speech. The Cold War happened too. As well as 9 11. Even In modern day our country struggled with financial problems and racial problems… what chaplins kindness has showed me is that we haven’t changed since then… and even this cell phone I’m currently typing on. This was in between that hundred year time span. It’s honestly so crazy to think about. On a less somber note, we’ve also had plenty of great films in between that time.
watched it when I was just a little kid with my dad don't remember much. Finally UA-cam brought it back today for me
Великолепный Чарли Чаплин!А фильму то 100 лет.
I really like the fight if those kids it was sooo funny😂😂oh my God that child is soo cute
Most of Chaplin’s films make you laugh. This one had me laughing and crying. He made a masterpiece that still has that classic old comedy to it, but also has lots of emotion enough to make anyone cry and laugh.
Чаплин во имя торжества идеалов Мира,Любви, Доброты ❤!😊😊😊
Шедевр -Фильмы,актёры,люди создавшие кино! Чарли также-непревзойдённый , яркая звёздочка среди других... ❤

I can definitely see why Michael Jackson love him so much. He is really funny.
Yes indeed. Plus that's where Michael got the moonwalk from.
I couldn't watch it without crying, how miserable was life back then.
Not more than ours

@@franco30528 no not more than ours nowadays life is very miserable😔 people r running 🏃towards money
@@shahroze2628 just as back then, but nowadays there is at least some sort of social security. I know not in every country, so let's talk about the country where this movie was made or similar good countries.
Charlie Chaplin was the first great Legend Comedy Hero of the Cinema۔
I salute to the Both Actors ❤
Grew up with this grow old with this movie . A masterpiece.
People watching this version should know that the musical score here is not the one written by Chaplin. You should definitely check out the one with Chaplins music. It makes a universe of difference...
Thank you for pointing this out. I remember the original score was more emotional than the one they put here. It was more fitting than this one here.
100 years a go
Очень трогательно, великолепно!🤩😍❤❤❤👍
Ребенок играет не хуже Чарли Чаплина, и это 21 год.

THE SAME HERE ABOUT CHARLIE CHAPLIN 🥰😍😻
Such a wonderful film that is priceless.
It's a really great film and really shows how he'd matured as a filmmaker since his early short comedies.
City Lights is also brilliant but this one is the one I'll remember most warmly.
Chaplin called the Actor playing The Kid a genius later on in life.
That actor is Jackie Coogan who most people know as Uncle Fester from the Addams Family TV show.
@@richardgazinia5482YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!IN THE 1960S!

The most genius actor ever lived - charlie chaplain. You made us both crying and laughing at the same time.❤❤❤
Although this is a comedian film but it carries a great humanitarian concept. Allah merci the souls of Charlie and the child Coogan and whoever else acted with them. 😘😘
The movie was primarily designed to show how tragic consequence "Capitalism" have on hard working general population and every one should oppose capitalism. Thats true.

Charlie Chaplien's character is exerlent and super.
талантливый человек 👍
This was the movie we had in school syllabus. And watched it in filim festival for the first time
Fun Fact: It was thinking back to how Chaplin went from short subjects to this that inspired Walt Disney to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
For all of you wondering why no one talks in the movie...it's a well-known fact that spoken language wasn't invented until about the 1930's.
Yep, people back then only spoke in beautiful orchestral symphonies
The kid is so cute damnn😅❤
The Tramp and Uncle Fester! What's not to luv...?
