Val Kilmer's health issues are such a shame. I always wanted him to cameo as Chris Knight on The Big Bang Theory.
Omg that would have been amazing
I'm just happy we got to see him in Top Gun Maverick. That was a great scene with both him and Tom.
I don't like the show but great idea missed opportunity 😕
That would have been PERFECT.
Show up with a bag of popcorn.
It's sad they waited so long for the Willow show. I do hope we get a wizened old Madmartigan appearance though.
Though Mr talked over it with his So-crates reference, the 'I drank what?!' joke is top tier intellectual comedy 🧐
My favorite joke in the movie. Lol
One of the best lines in the movie. 😟
My second favorite line:
Government Guy- Where’s the laser?
Jerry- It’s coming.
GG- Coming? It’s not even breathing hard. Jerry!!!
There are so many great lines in this movie.
It’s actually called witty comedy
In my opinion this is Val Kilmer at his best. His delivery was absolutely perfect in every scene.
OH SNAP!!! I totally forgot this movie! FUN MOVIE! A notch above weird science...but only a tiny notch
His best movie as the lead. He does funny better than serious.
Can see a lot of his Jim Morrison in this 👌
yep, val kilmer was the ryan reynolds of his generation
Tombstone, Willow, The Salton Sea, The Island Of D... Just kidding.
This movie is the perfect level of fun 80s nonsense. So glad you did this.
"I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said 'I drank what?'"
I can't believe somebody is finally reacting to this movie! I saw it in the theater when it came out, introduced me to Val kilmer
I saw top secret with my Aunt when it came out. They’re both wonderful and I’m sure we know them both word for word.
@@HappyHarryHardon you two are old!!!!
@@MikeB12800 You'll be there before you know it.
I *LOVE* this movie. It's one of the best comedies to come out of the 80's and is *criminally* underrated.
This film has one of my favorite go to lines "Sure I tell you, you tell somebody else, next thing you know we're in another ice age."
Yeah...we need that dude's tech right about now.
Fun fact: 2 of the nerds in this are in 2 different Karate Kid movies. Mitch is in the third one, paid to pick a fight with Daniel in a club. And the Japanese guy standing by Kent when he's talking to "Jesus", is in the 2nd one that fights Daniel at the end. Love this movie. Watched this and Top Secret many times after I bought them.
Also the actress who plays Jordan the hyperkinetic nerd also played a nerd the previous year in revenge of the nerds
Jon Gries is one of my favorite actors ever, his performance in this is incredible, as is his turn in Fright Night II and Napoleon Dynamite.
Since my favorite line was cut I’ll leave it here: “I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates who said, I drank what?”
Best line in the movie. I’ve been quoting it pretty much my whole life since this came out when I was in 5th grade.
@@ZacCostillaSure you have
Thanks for this reaction! Such an underappreciated gem.
Fun fact, this movie came out a year before the B1 Lancer was introduced to the public and officially put into service for the military.
In the early 2000’s I worked at a video store in los angeles and Val Kilmer came in to buy a copy of this for his kids to watch. We ended up talking movies for two hours.
Also, his kids were the least annoying kids ever.
Well, their mom is a kick-ass swordwoman...
One of my many, many honorary "Top 10 Movies!" I have been saying, "Well then, I'm happy and sad for you," for nearly 40 years. I love Lazlo. So glad you're doing this. Here we go! :)
One of my favorite movies! Not just because of Michelle Meyrink, but a lot because of Michelle Meyrink. So much quotability from the characters. Great soundtrack. A fun story with moral imperatives. It’s simply a winner. Thanks for reacting to it. I hope others will, too.
Now, if you’ll pardon me, it’s hot and I’m hungry. Where’s that Jello?
Have you seen her in "Nice Girls Don't Explode"?
Val Kilmer’s character in this and Helen Hunt’s character in Girls Just Wanna have Fun were my role models as a tween. I wanted to be cool and funny and just not care. The best.
Kilmer isn't really playing "smart" in this, he is playing "cool." He just happens to be smart.
he, kurt russel and jody forster are a few of hollywood's real geniuses.
He's speaking words from a script. However "smart" he may be in real life, he's still "playing" smart because that's what *acting* is.
Otherwise you're saying that he can't play stupid. But it's not a problem for smart people who are good actors to play stupid.
@@victore6242: Kurt Russell and Jodie Foster. How hard is it to check the spelling of their names if you think highly of them?
@@NoHandleGrr they all are. though rudtger hauer added to his soliloquy at the end of blade runner. all actor are saying most actors are speaking someone else's words. plus they have years to practice. and with movies many attempts at crafting the needed delivery. hey, it's business of lies. but we have grown to depend on those lies. so much so that now the liars are paid more for two years work then those who actually perform those tasks in real life.
@@NoHandleGrr information was transmitted and received. you understood to whom i referred. get over yourself. i's just the movies.
Fun fact: the pilot of the ship in the opening is Stacy Peralta, one of the legendary Zephyr skate team, The Dogtown Z-boys, and founder of the Powell-Peralta skateboarding company!
I was checking to see if anyone would mention this. So, now I don’t have to. Thanks!
Oh hell yeah, this is by far my favorite of the "college comedy" movies from the 80's. Its criminally underrated imo.
It’s underrated but you clearly haven’t seen many..
@@VictorLugosi Yes, yes I have.
@@VictorLugosi you could watch every movie on earth and still have the bee movie as your favorite.
Ever since seeing this movie back in 1986, I have quoted his professor when ever someone calls me an a-hole or something... "count on it!"
I like to file this movie under F for Movie.
"Real Genius" was a piece of art. An 80's master piece. almost 33% montage...
There is _a lot_ of montage! Thank god they all work, and the music that plays over the top of them is good...
Michelle Meyrink(Jordan) was also in Revenge of the Nerds. She was a delightful actress that never quite got the respect she deserved.
The pilot of the Shuttle in the very beginning is Stacy Peralta, the founder of the Skateboarding Company Powell-Peralta. One of the companies that put skateboarding on the map in the late 70's/80's. Also "Closet Guy" is Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.
Thank you! Someone finally reacted to this. Glad it was you guys.
Jon Gries, the actor who plays Lazlo also plays Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite
A great 'that guy' actor. Also in Monster Squad and Fright Night 2 around this time.
It has gotten to the point where I pause starting to watch a movie ("She's Out of Control") to switch to watching a reaction video.
I too got the new Blu Ray a couple of weeks ago. It was long overdue for a proper disc. I remember catching it on HBO and watching it every time it was on.
The school was based on life at CalTech, from the pranks to details like drawing all over the walls.
Director Martha Coolidge made a comment on all the t-shirts, about spending a lot of time seeking out bizarre ones.
It is indeed based on Caltech and the dorms are accurately reproduced. As a Caltech freshman, I stayed across the hall from the "Saturn room" (Mitch and Chris's room) in what the movie has as Jordan's room. The cool feature of the room (which you can sort of see in the scene where Jordan is sanding her floor), is a loft for the bed that is seven feet off the ground. Apparently a mechanical engineering student wanted more floor space. Since the room had an extra high ceiling, he built a custom loft that allowed him to walk under the bed without hunching over. And he also built the bed- a heated water bed! Caltech was fine with the modification (the thing was solidly built out of 4x4s), and it was left as a permanent part of the room for future students to enjoy.
Fun fact: the guy who exits the bathroom before Jordan comes in and you see walking down the hall when they're gassing Kent is a real Caltech student. He was literally the "Tech" consultant for the movie. His younger sister was in my class.
This so reminds me of collage. It was very similar to this movie. Not only was it packs for of genius kids, we even had buildings with steam tunnels in them. One actually had a grad student decide to make one his office.
I’ve always believed that, knowing Chris Knight, that he purposefully left the chip laying on the floor in front of the fire control computer on the bomber so Jerry would find it and start snooping around the open computer, trying to find the open slot, and look suspicious to the Air Force guys, and the fact that the suspected tampering resulted in it targeting the house that Jerry embezzled government money to build, made Jerry Hathaway look like a nut that purposefully sabotaged the weapon he was under so much pressure to create, even though he didn’t create it. You could hear the Air Force guy ask Jerry “what have you done?!” when they saw Jerry’s house on the screen.
I love this movie. My favorite scene is when they're breaking into Kent's room wearing gasmasks and the student walks by like it's all normal.
As an engineering student living in a dorm at the University of Colorado in the 70s, it was the sort of thing I'd have walked by. Or been wearing a gasmask.
Wow. I envy you. Seeing Real Genius for the first time is one of life's little pleasures. Enjoy. I grew up with this film. My friends and I would often quote it all throughout junior and high school. Some kids quoted Caddyshack, we quoted Real Genius. It's a great film.
Of course it's possible. It's called "sublimation." In fact, it's common. That "ice" could have been "dry ice" (solid carbon dioxide) which sublimates directly to gas easily.
If only we can keep it from exploding!🤣🤣🤣
Dry ice would sound horrendous if skated upon though 😖
@@LordVolkov Carbon dioxide is mostly inert, and practically impossible to explode. It's also heavier than air, and would have suffocated everyone on that floor.
You can't skate on dry ice though
@@ATSaale Actually, I recall reading not too long ago that the "traditional explanation" we have for skating (that blade pressure creates a thin layer of liquid) is likely wrong. It might very well be that you COULD skate on dry ice. Although this has nothing to do with the actual film -- movie magic, etc.
YES! This is my favorite Val Kilmer film, and one of my favorite films of the 80's.
I think you're the first reaction channel that I've seen react to it.
Thank you!
Trivia: Kent (Robert Prescott) also played Cole in Bachelor Party in 1984 (the year before Real Genius) where he also played an obnoxious jerk who also had his car stolen and messed with as a prank.
I'm so glad someone is finally reacting to this one! A friend taped this off HBO (or some pay channel) in 1987 when I was in HS, and I watched it all the time. Totally fun movie.
I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates when he said... "I drank what?"
Probably not a very popular movie especially today but I saw this years ago on "on-demand" I too thought it was pretty fun. Great reaction. Val is one of my fav actors
Possibly my favorite 80S movie.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time!
Another movie in the vein, is "Deal of the Century" with chevy chase, sigourney weaver and gregory heines as arms dealers in the 80's. A great satire film!
"Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is the best end credits song that wasn't specifically written to be an end credits song.
16:40 😆😆😆 Oh, this young lady and her _experiments._
OH SNAP!!! I totally forgot this movie! FUN MOVIE! A notch above weird science
Another childhood favourite of mine. Val nails it with the witty remarks. Very quotable. And I quoted this movie a lot, to my friends dismay. 😂
Seriously this movie is so underrated, its just perfect in every way
This was on cable constantly from 86-89. It felt like it was on the TV at least twice a week during that time. Me & my friends pretty much had it memorized back then. I haven’t seen it in 20 years or more, but I’m glad to see that it still holds up.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Willl always hold up, vals one liners always kill lol i wanna see more of you in the lab.. then ill gain weight
Independence Day writer and producer Dean Devlin and Karate Kid 2 and Cobra Kai actor Yuji Okumoto are in this film.
Michelle Meyrink who plays Jordan is an early 80s teen movie staple.
She was also 'Judy' in Revenge Of The Nerds (1984)...
I have a theory that for a certain portion of the population who grew up in the 80’s and hates the EPA, college professors, and journalists we have William Atherton to thank.
The ice in the hallway was really done at Cal Tech in real life. Most of the stunts were. That's how they got the ideas.
It's possible that this is the movie that I've watched the most in my life. There was a time when I worked an afternoon shift and before I left for work this was running on some channel or other, and I just left it on in the background. That went on for weeks. Because why would I even bother putting anything else on when Real Genius is available?
I've watched The Princess Bride quite a bit more...but this one is definitely WAY up there. I think my #2 is actually Forbidden Planet.
Val Kilmer absolutely IS the BEST BATMAN!!!
I worked at T-SHIRTS PLUS at my mall when I was 15 yo and had 3 diff customers come in to make I HEART TOXIC WASTE shirts!!!! This is def one of the best 80's comedies of all time!!!! ALWAYS love you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Randomly saw this movie on tv as a kid. Always love me some Val Kilmer! Btw, my favorite real genius is a tie between his character Chris and closet sweepstakes winner Lazlo. Also enjoy seeing William Atherton play the asshole antagonist in our favorite 80s classics but also enjoy it more when he gets his inevitable comeuppance.
A lot of favorite songs from this Real Genius movie, and I like playing the popcorn music montage, though I wish it was longer. Yes, this was one of my favorite movies from the 1980s. Most kids today will never experience the freedom one felt if you had the life experiences similar to the youth movies from the 1980s.
I met "Dickless" (William Atherton) at a DragonCon and asked him "why do you always get typecast as asshole douchebags?" He looked hurt for a second, but just when I thought he was going to walk away or say something offensive, he smiled, shrugged, and said, "Guess I'm the right guy for the role!"
Check him out in the Robert Wise movie *The Hindenburg.* He doesn't play a douchebag...but he plays a good man who thinks he's doing the right thing, which is of course ten thousand times worse. 😎
Michelle Meyrink is so underrated... She is an amazing actress.
I also loved her in Revenge of the Nerds.
Her parts in this and "Valley Girl" are so different I did not recognize her for a while after I was familiar with both movies.
It's too bad she retired from acting.
@@ksavage681 She teaches acting in Canada nowadays.
She was in a film called Permanent Record with Keanu that was good..a bit of a bummer film in parts but a underrated film I feel.
They actually tried some of these experiments on Mythbusters. The found that you really can pop popcorn with a laser, but the popcorn isn't strong enough to break through a house.
Did they determine if it's possible to sit down with a license plate in your underwear?
The Audio COmmentary to the disc is really interesting..the director stated that all the experiments in the film are in theory possible...they had experts to run all the things by..Also that contest win actually happened, I think it was student from Cal Tech , thats why they started saying one entry per household and etc on contests..
The guy in the closet (Lazlo Hollyfeld) is played by Jon Gries who is better known as Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.
This was my very first favorite movie. Kilmer has been at the top of my list of actors since I was seven or eight.
Check out Joe The King to see his unique version of abusive drunk father.
@@tempsitch5632 That's actually one I have not yet seen. I'll go correct that shortly. Thanks for the recommendation!
Have a wonderful day.
@@JKM395 Warning: it’s Heavy. Directorial debut of, and autobiographical story of Frank Whaley (you know him from a lot of things, hopefully Career Oppurtunities). Enjoy.
Also, Kilmer is excellent in Salton Sea if you’ve never seen it.
@@tempsitch5632 I'll keep that in mind. I have seen Salton Sea. You're right. I quite enjoyed it.
To this day, i enjoy this movie. For me, this film and Spartan are Kilmer's two best movies where he was the lead actor. But this movie put kilmer on the map.
Thanks for watching one of my favorite movies! ❤️
The 6 inch spike line is one of my favorite quotes.
My second favorite line:
Government Guy- Where’s the laser?
Jerry- It’s coming.
GG- Coming? It’s not even breathing hard. Jerry!!! 😂😅
I had a douchy coworker that hated popcorn. So, I got popcorn air fresheners and put them in his drawers where he couldn't find them. And i got popcorn scented spray and sprayed his chair and fabric wall when I walked by. After he was fired, somebody moved over to his cubicle. She brought a ton of air fresheners to combat the smell. I walked by and opened the drawers and cupboards and removed all the popcorn flavored stuff. Ah, good times.
According to the director they discovered that popcorn dust is both flammable and explosive. The warehouse where it was being popped burned down.
"Why is that toy on your head?" "Because if I wear it anywhere else, it chafes." Nobody ever reviews this movie! It's in my top 10. Just absolutely love it. Thanks for the reaction.
The movie poster with "him in his sunglasses" you're thinking of is Tom Cruise in RISKY BUSINESS.
Despite your confident assertion, there are no lasers in orbit powerful enough to zap a single person on the ground into ashes in a moment.
If they existed, there would be triumphant magazine spreads and press conferences and write-ups in journals and a ton of scientific evidence and publicity.
But, back in reality, clouds and atmosphere disperse laser light like crazy, which is why so far even land and ship-mounted lasers are good only for blinding missiles and possibly lightly burning thin skins, aka "soft" targets such as solar panels, in the best of weather.
What will come far sooner are laser weapons that *in the vacuum of space* will eventually be able to outright vaporize material, but lasers that reach from orbit to the ground and vaporize are way way way not technically feasible yet.
I'm kind of amazed that someone would blithely claim otherwise with no knowledge whatever, although, on the other hand, not knowing at all what you're talking about is the only way to make such a dopey assertion.
1:50 The classic 80s movie with just a dude in his sunglasses in a close-up is Risky Business and stars not Val Kilmer aka “Iceman” but stars a very young Tom Cruise later to be known as “Maverick”
Back in the 80s, I had a huge crush on Deborah Foreman (the general's daughter). This, April Fool's Day, My Chauffeur, 3:15, Waxwork, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, etc. Actually, in my opinion, she was about the only good part of those last two.
One thing that always bugged me about the aftermath of the popcorn scene. You see people carting off wheelbarrows full of popcorn, but the popcorn destroyed the house, including smashing out the window. Which means that there's probably bits of broken glass mixed in with it. yeah, I know, it's just a movie and you're not supposed to think that deeply about it, I just can't help thinking that I wouldn't want to risk eating it.
Yes! One of my all-time favorites, and the first reaction to this film I've ever seen. Well done!
So often I gauge this on Mrs. Movies or Mr. Movies... this is one that makes me excited for both! ALL LOVE TO VAL KILMER! I hope they like it!
To this day if anyone says something good followed by something bad, I say “Then I’m happy and sad for you”
I can't believe you guys are reviewing this. My favorite part is when the nazis knock Nick out during the torture scene and he has the dream he gets left back for another year of high school but he wakes up to getting beaten but says, thank god! Like the extra years of high school was worse. I've had that dream before. I can relate
Thank you so much for reacting to this! It’s such an underrated film! A real gem!
Love Kilmer everything he's done. His documentary "Val" is a heart warming gut punch.
Lazlo....played by Jon Gries also played Broots on the TV series The Pretender.
He also played Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.
I can’t hear Everybody Wants to Rule the World anymore without looking for Dennis Miller.
The Frito-Lay even actually happened. Read up on the Director and the first online press conference.
The girl always makes me think of Phoebe Cates.
Mythbusters famously did a episode on this movie specifically about lasers and popcorn.
"Leslo's" other famous role is of course "Uncle Rico" from Napoleon Dynomite- he's got to be one of my favorite actors.
Loved this movie since i 1st saw it back in the 80s. Some Trvia.......
Skateboarder Stacy Peralta plays the astronaut in the opening scene
Producer/Screenwriter Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independance Day, Godzilla) is at the party with the beauticians.
Yuji Okumoto who plays Chozen in the Karate Kid 2 is also at the party with the
beauticians.
Gabe Jarret who plays Mitch was really good friends with Ralph Macchio and made a cameo in Karate Kid 3.
From one nerd to the next, you guys make me laugh🤣. Love your channel, keep it up.
The girl at 11:13 is the original "one time at band camp"
Socrates : “ I drank what?”
Socrates died from drinking hemlock
You two need credit for your movie selections. Even if they are patron motivated you are still reacting to obscure stuff. I have loved Real Genius, Clay Pigeons for years and people never react to them. I think you reacted to True Romance too so even more of the lesser watched greats. Another great to react to is Idiocracy. I don’t think you’ve reacted to it so if you haven’t both seen it you should add that for a perfect score. Keep doing what you guys do. It’s so nice to find variety in a sea of the same.
I remember WPIX Channel 11 used to play this movie all the time - edited for television, of course.
That's where I first saw the film. 😊
"I was hot and I was hungry." 🤣
This is my second favorite Val Kilmer movie behind Tombstone. Great 80's flick!!!
Great reaction. I love this movie its hilarious. Been watching it since I was a teenager in the 80s. This is the first reaction I've seen anyone do.
You should also check out his Top Secret, which was his debut film a year before Real Genius.
This has been one of my fave movies, since I saw it IN THEATRE, first time at movies alone when I was 12
I love this movie! I used to watch it all the time
Oh my gosh. You guys reacting to one of my absolute favorite movies from the 80s!! Thanks so much!!!
I saw this movie on Cinemax when I was 15 in 2000. I loved it so much I called my older brother to tell him to see this "old" movie and he was like, "yeah. No shit. Everyone loves it. Everybody wants to rule the world.".
Omg, yesss! haha I love this one, one of my 80s favorites. So glad to finally see a reaction to it.
Favorite genius has to be Val Kilmer, and favorite experiment is convincing Kent he's talking to Jesus. Hilarious!
had a popcorn commercial when the pop corn was being set off
Well that's a new one! Give that marketing guy a raise for buying that ad spot haha!
Chris Knight is the basis for my whole sense of humor since it came out when I was in high school. I don't know if I should be bragging about that.
After hearing the comment that this was Mr Movies' 2nd favorite Val Kilmer film, I was certain of the first. Then ... "Batman"??? I did a quick search. Y'all never did a reaction to Tombstone!!! I'm shocked! That's the movie where he deserved an Oscar, hands down. Definitely needs to be watched.
no way, I believe you guys are the only ones who have reacted to this movie.
used to catch it on TV back in the day.
have yet to find it on dvd or blue ray
