It's about time you cork sooking ice-holes got around to seeing this movie. The commercial that killed the DA was a reference to Schlitz Malt Liquor. They used a bull as their mascot.
@@kakarikiyazoo People have forgotten the old saying, "Like a bull in a China shop"... which was the idea behind the commercial. Nowadays, we'd say, "Like a looter at a Target"
Whenever you’re walking along the docks, be sure to pay attention to the spaces between the boards, because when you’re out of slits, you’re out of pier.
The reference to the commercial with the bull coming through the door, was the trademark of the Schlitz Malt Liquor company. "Don't say beer, say Bull", was their jingle, The commercials ran in the late 1970's, and had a bull coming through the walls, doors, etc at the end of the commercial. You can probably find a video on the internet.
So happy to finally see a reaction to this movie! Unlike (for instance) Airplane!, these jokes and sight gags are understated and clever as well as nearly continuous. Good for a nonstop chuckle vs. outright ROFL. As many others noted, the red smoking jacket and bull were a reference to a series of malt liquor ads from the day. The newsman who keeps getting whacked in the head is Ray Walston, famous as My Favorite Martian from the early 60s TV series, also in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Star Trek Voyager. I love every bit of this movie and every character. I think Dundee's corner bathroom where he almost dies is a callback to Dr. Strangelove. Perhaps Lil's dress was an inspiration for Jessica Rabbit's dress. Of course the 88 Magnum was a play on Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum. And so forth. I think my favorite line is the exchange about "you've got those..."
Schlitz Malt Liquor was represented as The Bull, I remember a commercial or so from the time that had a stampede of bulls running through things. I smoke a massive amount of weed now so the memory comes and goes.
20:13 the bull running thru the window when he asks what the beer they are drinking was is a reference to a popular line of Schlitz commercials that always ended with a bull running thru a wall or window back in the 70s and early 80s.
Sclitz Malt Liquor sold "Bull Beer" and their commercials usually had a bull crashing in after someone tastes it. Then combine that will the trope of bulls charging red, with the DA holding up that bright red smoking jacket in front of himself.
I only ever heard of this movie because of the Weird Al song. Finally watched it when I was in my late 20s, and when I saw Michael Keaton putting price stickers on puppies, I almost pissed myself laughing.
I lost it at the theater at that point. I was on the floor laughing so hard i could barely breathe. My fiancee was asking what was i laughing at - then i would laugh harder. Then he's like people are staring - what are you doing? I missed most of the movie and we had to see it again the next day
My Favorite Bit was the Crooked Doctor's wardrobe. After every unnecessary surgery the Doctor's outfit got richer and more luxurious. Finally he dressed like a millionaire! The best Comedy is often the most subtle Comedy!
This movie is SO quotable. And has probably been mentioned below, I would also recommend MR. MOM as another GREAT 80s Keaton movie. Also THE OTHER GUYS, which he only has a supporting role in, but he steals every scene he's in. Also, pretty sure that picture of Devito in the newspaper is a shot from him on the sitcom TAXI :D
There's a comedy movie with Peter Boyle and Michael Keaton called The Dream Team about mental patients. I think you'd like it. The D.A. dying in a commercial is a reference to the 80's Schlitz malt liquor commercial with the bull running through the wall.
The bull busting through the wall to kill the DA is a parody of Schlitz Malt Liquor commercials in the 1970s, which showed "the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull" doing... that.
Dies in commercial refers to the Schlitz malt liquor bull. 70s Schlitz ads had a bull crash thru the window as in the scene w/ DeVito when he said, "Malt liquor". Malt liquor are the words that cue the bull to jump in. Here's one featuring a young Kevin Kline: ua-cam.com/video/CN29IovXrBU/v-deo.html That joke is admittedly very dated.
I guess my favorite scene was when Danny Vermin (Joe Piscopo) said “You shouldn't kick me in the balls, lady. My sister kicked me in the balls once, ....once.” 😁 BTW, now you need to watch “Harlem Nights” (1989). The cast reads like a who’s who of comedy greats from the 70s and 80s. Definitely worth the watch! Oh, and Joe Piscopo had a Halloween Special on HBO in 1987 that was pretty good. We all liked it, anyway.
This was one of my dad’s favorite movies. As a child of the 80s we watched this movie on tape over and over and over again. I love it and had not seen it in decades. One of the things I love about this film is the mom. As a kid the jokes about her sexuality went right over my head.
Dick Butkus is the driver of Dundee’s car, the guy reading the descriptions of the car is the Skipper from Gilligan’s island and the newspaper guy who kept getting hit in the head is Ray Walston who played in My Favorite Martian and Mr Hand in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Nobody noticed Dick Butkus as Boyle's driver? The bull was a pop culture reference at the time. There was a beer commercial in which a bull would stampede whenever someone opened a schlitz beer.
I occasionally quote this movie when I see/hear fireworks going off. With the exception of my old roommate, no one has ever had a clue what I was talking about. They mostly look disturbed by my comment and ask, "Who's Johnny?".
This gets lost in the shuffle among the Mel Brooks films and Zucker/Abrams/Zucker comedies like "Airplane!" but "Johnny Dangerously" holds up as well as any of them
The died in a commercial gag was from an ad for Schlitz Malt Liquor back in 1981. It had a bull on the bottle and in the commercial it had a bull break through wall and had a slogan that said no one does it like the bull.

Johnny Dangerously, Joe vs the Volcano, Oscar, Clue, and Little Shop of Horror's. all part of the same feel and brilliant comedy! "Joe vs the Volcano" especially!
Such a GREAT movie! I've loved this since it came out when I was a kid and only appreciate it more as I've grown older. Had such a HUGE crush on Marilu Henner, who I remember from the TV show "Taxi". But don't call me old! My Grandma called me old once...ONCE! 😲

He's a great actor, and wish he would be in more films now. People should check out the 2016 film The Founder, which is about Ray Kroc, the person that is famous for the fast food chain McDonald's.
