  • In this very short video I will explain what D.T.M.F. tones are with regard to GMRS radios and the ham radio hobby. I will explain the definition of DTMF, I will go over the history of using DTMF tones in ham and GMRS, and I will demonstrate what DTMF tones do.

I used to use DTMF, for Autopatch starting in 1973, as an add on to my
first Drake ML2 2 meter mobile.
I know it can be used as a control
    function.
    Additionally, some transceiver have
direct frequency input via DTMF pads. 😊

Yes I used auto patch on my local repeater back in the day before cellphones, great fun and I impressed my friends with it they thought I was a dork always carrying that radio around but when I got us out of a few jams from time to time or was able to call for help for a major auto accident in a remote area the dork title went away! There are still a few repeaters here in Colorado that still have an auto patch function that covers areas where cellphone coverage is bad!

DTMF tones are used to trigger relays, activation of cross band repeaters, and phone patches
We used *88, #88 to activate and deactivate the crossband repeaters
We also used * on our simplex phone patch frequency to activate the phone dial tone.
To hang up we used #
We also used tones to call different people
So in my Kenwood TK-250 and TK-350 I have my personal unit number so I can be paged if I am not active on the radio.
It beeps just like a pager
The other great thing to own is a 2-tone pager, so you can have a lot of different people with their own tones
And we can have a group tone
SO 313 pages all the people in our zone
    1090, 515 pages a specific person
So you can use 1 frequency and talk to a lot of people without bothering anyone else.

The ham radio program "EchoLink", commoly uses DTMF tones.
(Echolink provides an internet link so Hams can easily talk around the world, with other Echolink users. This can be done via a PC, phone / tablet, and via a Radio & Repeater, or an at home Simplex Repeater!)
The tones are used to operate the program, from a radio. DTMF tones allow access, dial various stations, and other program functions.
Its a simple, easy, and stable system. Its pretty cool, because I can sit in my back yard with my HT, sipping a cold bevv-erãge 🥃, all while chatting with a chum in England! 🇬🇧 (God save the King!)
