    Owning pets is a learning process with many trials and errors. I love how willingly you are to learn more and fix your mistakes. I love how much enrichment you are putting in there cages. If your looking for good cheap cages the sterile 200qt bin from Walmart is amazing it’s 600+ square in. I personally use that bin for my hammy also.

      hi! thank you! btw your name is so pretty! and i never realized how much hamsters need until having one so i want to make sure they’re happy and healthy! same with the bunnies, growing up i had a friend that kept them in a hutch outside and then my senior year, one of my classes had a bunny and it was alone in a cage. i thought a cage was normal. she was given her occasional treats and got pellets and maybe a little bit of hay. i don’t think the teacher ever made her salads, which now blows my mind and i wish i could go back and give her one myself and give her an abundance of hay. she was the sweetest thing and i fell in love with the whole idea of having a bunny so when i moved out and the opportunity was there, i did some research on some basic info and it’s crazy learning what they actually need compared to what i’ve grown up knowing. no animal should suffer so if i’m doing something wrong, i definitely want people to call me out so i can fix it!!

      Home Depot sells that Sterilite 200 quart bin/50 gallons too. If not at your local Home Depot another one nearby may have it in stock. Or from their website through Amazon. It has the same 640 square inches as a 40 gallon breeder tank. Recently the California Hamster Association upgraded to a 600 square inch recommended minimum for all hamsters from 450 square inches. The Ontario Hamster Association retains its 450 square inches for dwarfs and 620 square inches for Syrians. Target sells a larger Christmas tree bin but its usually only in stock during the holidays...

    Hi! It’s so nice to see your love for hamsters💞 but I would definitely recommend getting some more items for the enclosures examples would be some wood and cork-logs😊 I would recommend buying from zoo plus they sell giant wood pieces for great price and cork logs are also for good price! And definitely worth the money👍🏼 and for the hamsters a bigger sandbath😊

    Great video! I would probably say that Peppercorn looks like a hybrid of a chinese and a russian hamster. With trimming her nails, give her something in her cage for her to like wear down them a little and tame her a bit more before trying to trim them. Butter and Peppercorn are so adorable and cuteee! Have a great day!

    Oh, winter white 🥰 same as mine.
    About the nail, vet (the one that handle hamster anyway) can clip it for you. To maintain their nail, you can add something like rocks (I think either Rachel or Erin talk about nail maintenance and how to sanitize rock in their video) and using sand bath. I leave sand bath, coarse rock, terracotta hideout and wooden bendy bridge for my hamster to walk and dig, so far his nail looks trim.
    Your syrian escape behavior however, you may need to add more enrichments, if all fail then they need bigger cage.

    • @thepetpantry
      @thepetpantry  2 роки тому

      hi! i’ve added some rocks and a sand bath for the nails, i’ll have to look into adding a couple more wood pieces for her! as for butter escaping, i did block the back so he can’t climb up anymore and i moved his nest that he made in our bathroom to his cage! i have ordered a couple more things for him to give him more enrichment and we also let him “free roam” sometimes since he likes running around the apartment! we’ve also been looking for a bigger bin to put him in but we haven’t found one that was clear and bigger than his right now, but we are still looking! :)

      Or DIY the bin's lid for air ventilation with steel mesh zip tied. You'll need to cut a large hole for the steel mesh, preferably of quarter inch grid, using a hot knife or box cutter blade. Some use a candle flame, I just boil a pot of hot water and dip the blade into it to heat the blade. A hot blade cuts through the plastic easier... Repeat heating the blade as necessarily to keep it hot while you cut. To keep the hamster safe, they must not be able to escape. Hamsters are Houdinis. I have seen hamsters climb aquarium glass at the corner, they can do the same with a bin. Keep them safe, use a latching lid... I’m a little late, but I think Peppercorn is a hybrid dwarf (a winter white/campbell Russian dwarf). Also, I would add more bedding and a bit more enrichment so the hamsters have the best time! The reason why he’s not burrowing is because there’s not enough bedding for him to burrow in; taking away bedding most likely won’t help much. It might be a good idea to get a lid for your bin cages! I hope you enjoy your day! You’re doing great. :)

      hi thank you!! i have gotten them more enrichment since this video was posted and our butter boy has burrowed a little bit more since then as well! from him escaping so much, he created a nest in our bathroom so we moved it into his purple house and now he has a little hole buried down and burrows down through his house! i’ve also blocked his way of escaping and he hasn’t gotten out since! a lot of people have suggested lids but i love being able to reach in all the time and not having to worry about air flow! i hope you’ve enjoyed your day as well! :))

    I think she is a hybrid between a winter white and a cambell, because she has the face of a winter white, and the ears of a cambell (Winter whites and cambells are the only domesticated species that are able to interbreed to create hybrids) She is too short to be a chiness hamster, and too small to be a syrian. She also seems too be to be a roborovski but i could be wrong.

    Oh also for the nails! So my hamsters couldn’t stay still for me to trim them but having different rough textures they can grab on will file them down. I had grape vine wood, cork logs, and large rocks they can’t eat or pouch.

  • @lizzyh9213

    To help with nail trimming you can get some rocks from outside, scrub them with soap and water and a brush, then soak them in soapy water for 1-2 hours and then scrub the rocks again with water. Then let the rocks dry, after drying you can put the rocks throughout the cages, around places they would climb/go to a lot (for example:in front of the wheel, in front of the water bottle, around the water bowl) and with time their nails will naturally wear down and trim.
    And I also wanted to talk a little about the size of gingers cage, I’m not saying that it could be bad, but it looks a bit small for ginger as he is a larger Syrian. I would suggest trying out a 700-900 sq inch cage for him if you can at the moment. (Examples:IKEA Detolf (940 sq inches), Midwest Critter Nation (864 sq inches) the only thing with the critter nation is that if you wanted to actually have bedding in it you would have to either build a barrier to place inside the cage that is high enough for bedding which could be made out of wood, chloroplast or other things, or you would buy a specific bucket that fits to the inside of the cage(you can find out more about how to line the cage if you go to the Amazon reviews and look for the people who specifically bought the cage for their hamster)

      hi! thank you soooo much! this is incredibly helpful! i did put rocks in so i’m going to check back in a couple days and see how much they’ve went down and if i notice it helping i’ll definitely add a couple more! after the nails are back to normal, should i leave the rocks in or take them out?
      ginger is a pretty big chunk, she’s definitely gotten bigger since we got her, hopefully healthy weight haha! but i do really want to upgrade her, i’ve heard of the detolf but not critter nation. i’ve also been really considering building her victoria raechels diy cage! that can be a little money heavy so we’re probably gonna go with the detolf for now! i eventually want to give them all cages that run across the whole wall where they’ll have plenty of space and lots to explore! i’ll make another video with a whole cage upgrade soon! again, thank you!!

      @@thepetpantry First off big shout out to you for being so open minded! Most hamster owners will reject help. I admire you because of this. And yes of course! If the hamsters do use the rocks often and it trims down their nails a bit, along with all the other surfaces you’ve provided them the rocks are also a form of enrichment and you can actually use larger stones that are big enough for the hamster to lie on in the summer to help cool them down! So you can definitely leave them in as it won’t do any harm to them but it’s completely up to you if you do, also for the detolf make sure you can make a lid fit for you. As the detolf is also know for something hamsters can easily escape from if not provided with a lid that has something that can hold it in place, some people use latches, some people use weights, etc. Some helpful channels I found for lids were HammyLux, The Izzy’s, Haileys house and Alyssa Nicole (Alyssa’s is the easiest but I have found videos of Syrian hamsters being able to slip between the slits) also to find the videos you can search up the channel name and then ikea detolf. You’re hams are so lucky to have you and I wish you all the best.

      this is so sweet🥺 thank you, thank you, thank you. i’ll have to get some larger stones and some different textured ones because the ones i found are all kind of the same, but it’s so cool that they use that to cool off! i really don’t want my hammys to have a lid just because i like being able to reach in at any time so i might just wait and do a diy one! the detolf sounds great but for the escape reason and having a lid, i’m leaning more towards not getting it, now i don’t know what to do😫 part of me also wants to just get 2 bins and connect them with a little tunnel or cut the sides so i can stick them together so the cage is bigger😂 i’ll have to do some more research on some cages so i can find the perfect one to fit my hammys needs and mine lol, but thank you for making me aware of the detolf! i’ll definitely check out those channels you recommended so i can get more hamster knowledge and be a lil hammy expert🐹👩🏼‍🏫 again, thank you replying back to me and i don’t take any of it as hate, only as help and advice on this channel :) 🤍

    I love your new Hammies they're so adorable. I just wanted to say that even though Butter seems to not "like" burrowing that might be due to the amount of bedding. All hamsters will burrow because they love to, so I'd recommend giving him at least 10 inches of bedding. Since there have been studies that show, most hamsters don't start creating burrows (or burrow systems) until around 10 inches has been given. You can also give your hamsters burrow-starters. These can be PVC tubes from the hardware store, you just have to put the tube half under the bedding but leave the entrance above the bedding. This usually works to encourage burrowing. Also, I'd personally add a lot more natural clutter, cork logs, grapevine wood, and things. I get my wood pieces from the reptile section of my local pet store. Just make sure it's a hamster safe wood. Lastly (I'm not sure if you do have a lid but I'm thinking you don't have one?) I would really recommend making lid for Butters bin cage, it's not too complicated. You just need metal wire, zip ties, and something to cut the plastic lid with. Because it's really not safe nor responsible to leave a hamster cage without a lid, since hamsters love to try and escape (even the largest of enclosures) especially Syrian hamsters. Not trying to be rude, since you obviously are loving pet owners

    • @thepetpantry
      @thepetpantry  2 роки тому +1

      thank you! i’m pretty sure i’ve said this in other videos but butter is old and burrowing hasn’t been his thing, we upgraded his cage and he still doesn’t burrow. he loves his purple hidey and sleeping wherever he wants lol. when we upgraded his cage, we gave him more hideys but the purple always wins. we do plan on getting more wood pieces and natural clutter but it’s hard to find stuff that’s affordable. we’ve also been trying to find more sprays but the shipping on etsy is fucking wild and not worth it so our only option has been millet. as for butter having a lid, he does now lol, but none of the other enclosures have lids for my own personal preference. we’re always reaching in the cages to clean/handle the hammies so having no lid is what works best for us🤍

      @@thepetpantry that’s great and I haven’t seen all your videos so I didn’t see that Butter was older. So I’m sorry for being misinformed. I have no idea how much bedding you're putting in, but there needs to be 6 inches. And a spot for them to deeply burrow, commonly done on the left with having one side higher than the other. Syrians hamsters are incredibly picky and can be prone to boredom quickly. I know you're upgrading their enclosures, but an ikea detolf is a good start too.
    You actually can have the dwarf hamster run in a 6.5 or size to an 8-inch wheel. Depending on how you're setting up your cages in the future-as in German styled/natural cage or semi-natural or colorful-they’re going to need different substrates.
    The most common substrates for enrichment, as I'm sure you know, are organic potting soil, sanitized play sand, eco-earth sand, coco coir, soft bedding (free of scent), aspen, etc.
    Suppose you haven't already started collecting rolls from toilet paper and paper towels. They have to be unscented tho, but they're lifesavers.
    You can grow to produce for hamsters if you're into that. They can eat a variety of plants. It's up to you if you want to feed live insects or freeze-dried your hamsters.
    Also, a little tidbit, careful with the sugar intake with the dwarf hamster. Some species of hamsters can not eat the same as, say, a Syrian or Robo Dwarf.
    I don't know if you use esty but there's food/enrichment on there or on getzoo or fat pouches.

      hi! thank you so much!! their cages are all higher on one side and have their wheel and sand on the other side, so they have room to burrow and also a good amount of space in the sand to roll around and dig! i’m hoping to go more natural with their cages with maybe slight pops of color, and i also want to get more substrates and sprays! we do have a little collection of toilet paper/paper towel rolls going and i’m hoping to follow some of Hammy Times diys!! since we always have veggies on hand for our bunnies, we do give the hammys some as well! they also get freeze dried mealworms in with their food mix! i’ve also been searching a lot on amazon and etsy for different hamster toys, sprays, and just other enrichment! i’ll have to check out the other two you listed! again, thank you so much! 🤍😊

The cage requirements for the size has to be 450sq of floor space or larger a 40 gallons is suggested how ever larger the better and the more things that you can add like things that niteangel has on Amazon and the cages that niteangel has can help from your hamster from escaping since it has a lid and I don’t know you made a lid for the cages that you made for them. 3.) hello! the bin cages that we have are 40 gallon bins, that's all we could find at the time. i do plan on upgrading all of them to Victoria Raechel's diy cage! i'm in the process of researching different and safe materials to put in their cages for more enrichment! if you have any recommendations on any websites or etsy stops that i should check out, that would be great! as well as any recommendations on enrichment in general! thank you so much for commenting!

    Dwaf winter White maybe

    • @wasterdays
      @wasterdays 2 роки тому +1

      yess they look like my winter white hybrid i say hybrid because only winter whites and cambells dwarf hamsters are allowed to breed together bc their each have 23 chromosomes, & since they’re most likely from a pet store they are not 100% ethically bred winter whites in breeding mills

    • @wasterdays
      @wasterdays 2 роки тому +1

      also, winter white hybrids can still carry the gene of changing the color white, & they also have a distinct black line down their back.

    peppercorn looks like a russian hamster / chinese hamsters are thinner and have a tail . i would put some stones into the cage for her nails .you can find these outdoors and they will need a thorough washing in hot soapy water [ videos on youtube on this ] . great job on adopting thses two hamsters and giving them a better life .

      @@thepetpantry they need hard surfaces such as stones and wood items , also the sand is abrasive and will help with the nails too while the hamster is digging and rolling in the sand .
