  • What have I learned from spending 50 days riding all over the Perth metro area? A lot - certainly more than will fit into this one video. If there is one big lesson that I think NSW needs to learn it is this - build every bike path/shared path using red asphalt. Be consistent. There's lots of other lessons in this video apart from that one, but for me, that's the main one.

As someone a bit anxious about getting on a bike (in Perth), this was helpful. Thanks. Didn't expect the urban planning commentary but I really enjoyed your perspective. Thanks again 😊

I hope they continue putting in the paths to meet the demands of an increasing population

At one point, I found the bicycle strategic plan. Their aim is to continue to extend the path out from the CBD in all directions. So far, they seem to be doing a good job of delivering on that plan - especially compared to NSW!

Great video, extremely informative and helps someone who wants to begin biking (like me) a better perspective on biking in Perth!

I spent most of my life in Perth, until I moved to Canada in 2015, and I had no idea there was so much bike infrastructure. Kinda kicking myself for not looking into it more.

A great video. Just one comment. I think shared paths along railway lines is a great idea, but I am more skeptical about riding on a separated path along the freeways or very busy highways such as Reid Highway. Riding in the traffic noise and inhaling fumes is not my idea of recreation or exercise. Fortunately my path to work avoids any of that - it includes a path along a rail line, a cycling only path along the river, a few loose ends on quiet suburban streets and one short section on bike lane on a busy road. Currently doing it once a week but aiming to increase to at least two. Cheers

I don't like riding south towards Cockburn for that very reason - I rarely venture south of the Mt Henry bridge. They put the shared path on the wrong side of the noise walls in places - they should have been on the same side as the houses, not the cars.

I think you are not looking, many cyclic cameras on bikes, close passes are common, ride on the road for a while and you will see drivers actively targeting, close passes and even throwing stuff at you a times at you.
Also no water fountains on the paths, it gets hot here, as there is no shops mostly along these path.

Compared to cycling in Sydney, I've had very few close passes in Perth. At one point, I was visiting a NSW police station nearly every month to report a close pass. Sure, there are some idiot drivers in WA - but I've experienced a heck of a lot more courtesy and patience in Perth. This place is heaven on a stick compared to the east coast.

@@baybugcanadabaybicycleuser915 There was a cyclist deliberately run over the other day, the driver has been charged with murder.

Great infrastructure and of course the Perth and environs terrain is essentially flat.

With fuel prices about $2 per litre i think demand for bicycle infrastructure will increase exponentially. We can't all afford a Tesla.
