It looks great! It might be annoying to ask but how much chains should I start with if I want to make it in size L(27-28 inches length) considering you did 44 stitches for XL(30-31 inches).

This tutorial is a bit confusing. Do you make 2 different cluster then join the whole length together or just the one cluster we began with?
