I was deeply moved by this heartfelt rendition. Full of pathos, emotion, dynamic contrasts and an exciting build up to the powerful climax where the suffering of Christ is so well expressed.
Steve, I cannot tell you how many times this track has given me good, hearty laughter over the years. I return to it every Christmas and celebrate it with my friends. It truly makes me crack up every time I hear it and I can't thank you enough for that. Glad that you've been found out after all these years! Best on all your future endeavors.
Steve, I listen to your version every year at Christmastime and I scream laughing every time. I literally HURT from laughing so hard. You are an inspiration ROFL
Today, at Christmas dinner at my house, we had three generations of people with tears running down our cheeks, snorting eggnog out our noses, and generally just laughing so hard that we nearly lost our dinner. Even my divorced parents were united in laughter thanks to this song. Thank you, Steve, for this amazing song and for the merriment and cheer you brought to my family today. :)

@@oliviajones1043I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope in time songs like this bring a smile to your face when you remember her. I will say a prayer for you and your loved ones tonight.
From American Idol train wrecks to tone deaf wannabes on UA-cam, none of them even comes close to capturing the unique blend of sincerity and wretchedness you managed to convey with this song two decades ago. It's sort of the gold standard of bad singing; a distinction for which you should be exceptionally proud. I wouldn't count on this thing ending anytime soon. It's going to be a Christmas tradition long after most of us have taken our last breath. It's your eternal gift to the world!
Your rendition of this song has literally pulled me out of suicidality at my worst times. I'm sad that I only discovered it after my mom died, a few days after Christmas a few years ago, and I couldn't share it with her. But this helps to keeps me from sinking during Christmas time. If she could hear the song, she'd be rolling over in her grave laughing.
The first time I heard this was back in 2005 or 2006. The Mikey Show on 105.3 played it, and I had to leave my office because they kept playing it and EVERYBODY was dying laughing! It has been our family tradition now every year to play the song and laugh our asses off! Thanks for the great belly laughes over all these years!
You nearly killed my uncle -- I shared the link to the original song to a family site, and my aunt came running to check on him: he was laughing so hard she thought he'd had a stroke. XD
I've been a fan for many years, Steve, so thanks for making this and telling the story of the song. I knew even then that only a highly skilled singer could have managed to include every potential problem, including bad taste with such style. Thank you for blessing us all these years.
I just had my middle school choir kids give feedback and talk about all the different vocal "techniques" you were using lol. Thank you for doing this. I have gotten into the Christmas Spirit every year starting with this arrangement! I absolutely love the track by the way. I am a huge huge fan of the Gaither Vocal Band and watch all the Gaither Homecomings. Even been to a concert before. Thanks!
Christmas is about sharing joy and happiness to others. This song certainly does that. If your belly doesn't ache from laughter while listening to this, then there may be something really wrong with you. I laughed hard, and so did everyone else who heard your version. Steve, Merry Christmas sir.

I think this rendition was better (worse) than the first. Why 30 OTHER people would want to lay claim to this is beyond me... Funny as heck though and is surely part of my holiday-music repertoire.
When I heard this yesterday, my first thought was, "This HAS to be a serious artist, somewhere, who made this after too many shots of tequila". It still rocks :)
Listened again tonight with the grandchildren. The 6 year old turned and said very quietyly "he's not very good". Out of the mouths of babes... glad to hear the story... lots of joy over the years!
You are a master. This track has brought laughter to our Christmas every year since the mid aughts. You may never have meant for it to be released as widely as it has been, but I'm sure glad that it was. Bought your track today. Merry Christmas.

Steve, I must tell you, when I first heard your version many years ago, I listened on my PC which had a detachable set of small speakers. When the second "Fall on your knees" part came, my cat jumped up onto my computer desk and with one powerful swipe she knocked both speakers onto the floor. I had been laughing heartily up to that point, but when that happened I completely lost control and started convulsing with laughter.
Howdy, Steve. I like your song (the version that's been floating around the Internet for the last 6 years more than the version you sing here 20 years later). A delightfully hideous version of a timeless classic; it still makes me burst out laughing. I'm glad you finally came out and revealed yourself; the Internet needs more candor. Thumbs up.
Hi Robbie, I am just seeing this post tonight. Thank you for liking my song. That is just a goofy thing we used to do in the studios back in Greenville, SC where I was a studio musician for several studio. It is always funny when a guy sings off pitch to a lushly orchestrated track. As you know, this one was not planned, it was just a spontaneous act, and even though I did not put this on the internet, it found it's way. I would have to say it was a God thing. A lot of people have found joy and laughter in my singing, and I am pleased. I am especially pleased at the thousands of people who have said my song is an annual event at their family get-togethers. I hope this song continues to bring joy to your household in the coming season. Sincerely, Steve W. Mauldin
LozPlaya, I had the same problem. I have a video on my UA-cam channel with Steve's song in it, and a corporation called "The Orchard" flagged it as being the song "Confiding In A Whisper" by Florida band "Hand To Hand". I had to appeal this rule not once, not twice, but *THREE* times. In my third appeal, UA-cam was threatening to erase my UA-cam account. So I informed Orchard that unless they released their bogus claim, I'd contain Steve Mauldin and let him know of Orchard's bogus claim, and recommend that he litigate. They immediately backed off and released their claim, in my case only. LozPlaya, and Steve, I suggest you both start haranguing UA-cam and The Orchard and threaten to litigate unless they fix their broken software (which is giving false positives) and stop claiming that Steve's performance is something they own.
Summer, I am just now seeing this even though you wrote it 9 months ago. It gives me great joy to know my foolishness has brought you joy and is a part of your annual festivities. I particularly am pleased when families say their Christmas season always includes me singing to the gathering of relatives. God did give joy to the world, and thrust me, he is pleased when people laugh especially when it is good, clean fun. It does warm my heart to know you find joy in this recording. By the way, my dad's middle name is Latimer. He was named after a preacher in the Church of God. They just called him Brother Latimer, I don't know his first name. My dad's name was Horace Latimer Mauldin. Thanks for liking my song. Steve W. Mauldin

I remember listening to the original when it first came out and laughing so hard I almost pissed my pants. For years I would send it to my coworkers as my holiday greeting. It got lost to time and multiple pc replacements and thanks to UA-cam I can re-live the memory, send it to my friends, and put a face to that torturous, mind numbing, and earshattering sound, priceless!!

the Bible says, "The Word will not return void." Though I was singing in jest, the truth of the lyric remains the truth. One musician wrote he was in a very dark place and found my song and played it a bunch of times in a row, and suddenly felt better. He said he found it by accident, but I think it was God leading him there, using comedy yet planting the seed of faith in him. Thank you for your very kind words. In all seriousness, my mission on this earth (as I understand it from the spirit of God) is to lift the spirits of men. If you will type #9 God! you will find a serious piece of music I wrote for the closing of my Master's recital in 2009. Sometimes I lift the spirits of men with beauty, sometimes with drama, sometimes with humor. My Master's recital was my life scored to music titled, My Life: A Journey of Musical Experiences. It is the story of my life labeled 1-9 but I think 9 was so long I had to do it in two parts. Laughter is great medicine. I sincerely appreciate the words you shared with me and hope you will check out #9 God! as well as #7 Symfunny. (Which is exactly what it appears to be) Thanks of you comments, Steve Mauldin

Steve W. Mauldin
I just love that you have put a face to this classic :)
I truly believe you have brought people a lot of joy and I hope you keep bringing that joy for many more years. Thank you for your reply. You seems like a very sweet and genuine person.
@@stevemauldin6133 It is that time of year again!
Hey, where are you from? My dad's family comes from Iowa and Connecticut area before that (we think). My dad does genealogy, but we, unfortunately, don't have anything beyond my Great Great Great Grandfather, George W. Latimer.
It would be awesome if we were related! Especially since you actually look a lot like my dad :)
Oh! I see you are from Tennessee.
My father's middle name was Latimer. Horace Latimer Mauldin. He was named after a preacher in Georgia with that same last name. If you are related to him let me know stevewmauldin@comcast.net
Intentional or unintentional, it is still comedy genius. I listen to this every year and I am glad to get the story behind the music. You are my hero!!!
The first time we heard this, we listened to it over and over and over again, and laughed until we were exhausted. Thanks for the background.
I have loved this for so many years and always post it as the start to my Christmas season. Thanks, Steve, for some of the greatest belly laughs I have EVER had!
Steve, I've been a fan of both this video and your original recording for many years. I love the story behind it! Have a safe and Merry Christmas season!
Hysterical!
The woods would be awfully quiet if only the best birds could sing.
Oh Steve. Words can't express how much joy and connection you've brought to my family. What a gift you've given so many of us. May our most loving and merciful Lord bless you and your family. ♥️
I play this at least once a year. I laugh so hard my stomach hurts :)
respect. That original serious version is stunning and powerful! And yeah, "the moment we've been waiting for"...it's YOU!! So awesome!
LMAO!!!! That is awesome, and yes, it is a spoof, just clowning around, love it, lol
I only heard the "infamous" version on the last video I saw before this one. And I'm surprised there is any skepticism about it. You are obviously the original "Artist."
This take was endlessly funnier in my opinion though! Great job
I play this every Christmas. It is soooo fun to torment my family with this one
Thank you, I take that "torturous, mind" as a term of endearment. Merry Christmas. Steve Mauldin
Thanks for stepping forward, Steve! My favorite part (aside from the song itself) is the following quote: "The whole era was cheesy, therefore the track was cheesy." Hope you're well, friend.
Randy Johnson
The hilarious roundness of your tone is sooooo funny. And the way you're able to maintain the flat pitch. That's tough to do on purpose! Bravo!
It's first time I come across the "wacky" version and luckily your response to it.Greatest sense of humour! Your body language, I laughed length of time U sang the "wacky"! U sure make yourself happy playing "silly"- in a good sense.
Ur not alone! With my daughter growing up, we played SILLY just to have great laughs.Best times with my daughter! Good to know you're out there. As U sang "wacky" version reliving original moment,I bookmarked for more good laughs.Ur response = allay critics.UP YOU!
I think you might be the only one who would make such an effort to claim this...musical phenomenon.
True. I thought it was cringe at first. But then it’s just sad that he has to defend his works.
Hey, Steve! I'm glad to finally know who's behind this. Thanks for a billion laughs!
All I could think the whole time… that’s gotta hurt. 😂😂😂 But it’s him!! It’s really him! I’m star struck!!
fantastic! thank you for your amazing and very hilarous contributions then and now :)
Steve, thanks for clearing this up! My Worship Planning Team at church listens to this every year while planning our December worship services...just to put us in the Christmas mood! :-)
I listen to this every year, several times.
Have been listening to this song every Christmas for years. And even after all that time, this song doesn't just make me laugh...it makes me cry. Thank you for all the smiles!!
This was, is, will forever be awesome. I've loved this for years. When you make a tradition, serious, joyful, mirthful, any combination thereof, hey: Tradition is tradition, and you've made it and have delighted millions of people in so doing. Thank You !!!
the Bible says, "The Word will not return void." Though I was singing in jest, the truth of the lyric remains the truth. One musician wrote he was in a very dark place and found my song and played it a bunch of times in a row, and suddenly felt better. He said he found it by accident, but I think it was God leading him there, using comedy yet planting the seed of faith in him. Thank you for your very kind words. I pray God gives you a blessed new year and a merry Christmas. Steve Mauldin
@@stevemauldin6133 thank you so kindly ! Indeed, I prefer to think the face of God smiles and laughs frequently. And may He grant You and Yours a blessed new year and Merry Christmas as well ! I can guarantee I will play your rendition again, sharing it with others, and enjoying it myself !
Steve, thanks for all the years of joy that you have brought to the world. I've never really like this song until I heard your version so many years ago. I am absolutely serious. The holiday season is incomplete until I give your original a listen.
Thanks and have a Merry Christmas.

oh my dear god!!! i sat here listening to the whole explanation of how hes the original singer. i even told my husband and son to come listen. im soooo sorry. dear god, my ears. i was confused when he started singing. u got me...
Steve, you are a good, good man because you have brought such laughter into my life... Your humility and good nature are the last piece I need to just relish rare and complete laughter. Thank you and God bless you! That song is no joke to sing!!!
FINALLY THE REAL SINGER! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO REGARDLESS OF IF YOU SANG THIS SONG FOR REAL OR FOR FUN IT TRULY IS VERY ENTERTAINING. IT IS MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS SONG!
HUMACAO, PUERTO RICO

You rock Steve! Merry Christmas

Absolute.... legend...
You sir are the genuine article and you ARE Christmas.
Christmas 2019... you made it divine!
I love your version of "O Holy Night"!! Bless your dear heart for recording it and being bold enough to finally step forward .... so that I can personally thank you for absolutely adding such a wonderfully fun element to our Christmas the past few years. We love it .. it ALWAYS makes us giggle to tears!! Wishing you a most wonderful Christmas. :)
Awesome, thanks for clearing that up! I spent many tears trying to recover from listening to your recording - one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Great job doing a youtube explanation. Kudos for your sense of humor as well.
"See I'm singing" --- Well that's generous
Still listening to this year's later. It's a family classic now. 3 generations 46, 27, and 7
Thank you Steverino: greatest Christmas gifts you can give: joy and music. cannot HELP but smile every time I hear this gleeful song. Greatest. Carol. Ever Recorded.
I tip my hat to you, Steve Mauldin, that’s got to be the funniest spoof I’ve ever heard.
I am so glad I came across this original version. The effort makes this even more hilarious.
It is nice to be appreciated. Thank you for your support. Steve Mauldin
You nailed it, man. Beautiful.
I've been looking for this!!!!
i love you steve. just hit christmas in australia and am listening to this as i always do on christmas.
Thanks for posting this. I needed a good laugh.
I feel like I've found the Holy Grail. I've been trying to find out who the original singer of this gem was for 10 friggin' years!!!! Every year I've been e-mailing it to everyone I know, blasting it on my cubicle speakers each day in December so the whole office can hear it, and worshiping its awesomeness without knowing its source.
My band director played this for us during class..... he was practically on the floor laughing his ass off...so golden
That was awesome. Thanks for the laugh.
Dude, you brought me so much joy and laughter with your version.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for the laughs.
Holy moly!! I have listened to this song every year at Christmas for a while now, and to come to find out he's from my hometown of Hendersonville?? Makes me proud.
I just about died with laughter the first time I heard this. It is an annual tradition for me to listen to. Thanks Steve!
Thanks Steve. I remember listening to this almost a decade ago and laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. I still laugh out loud whenever I hear it. This particular song made me laugh the hardest I had laughed in a long time then, and at a time when I needed it. Good stuff man.
Love this! I would totally buy your Christmas album!
The voice of a fallen angel! Steve - we love you!
