    There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
    New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

    I actually discovered Doritos on one of my many exploratory expeditions into the Amazon Rainforest that I made when I was 6. The Tupi tribe made me a blood brother and everyone clapped, too.

      @@williamkarbala5718Nah, the marker comes from that they were the first markers that had a sharp point on them rather than the fat ones that older magic markers had.

    "Sharpie" (as well as the closely related "card shark") originate from the older term "cardsharp" - a professional card player who wins primarily by cheating.
    So it's basically an old-timey slang for someone who's a cheater/liar/conman.

    L. Ron Hubbard is a good proof of concept to the idea that the enemy of your enemy (Murdoch, Rhodesia) is not necessarily your friend.

    I wonder (odd detail to fixate on, i know) if Hubbard's grandfather was playing a hurdy-gurdy. It's an instrument which operates a bit like a fiddle or viola (the strings are rubbed) and has a somewhat similar sound, but it's played holding it in your lap and has a larger body than a fiddle, so it might be confused for a guitar if you don't know. And the classic ones are often ornamented with a sculpted head. I wonder...

      The early years of Scientology (when it was known as Dianetics) were utterly bugf-ck crazy. It's boring now, because David Miscavge (the leader since 1987) takes all his cues from Protestant churches and not other cult leaders. I mean it still is cruel to the poor Africans and Eastern Europeans they trick into the Sea Org (the priest class that are really mostly groundskeepers/janitors/handymen) by holding their passports and paying them $50/month or less.

  • @MrJohndoakes
    @MrJohndoakes 5 місяців тому +1

    34:20 That book is probably "Dianetics '55" and the "church" still sells it. In fact they sell nearly every book Hubbard wrote, but not in the same editions.....there is a lot of evidence that they were secretly rewritten in the 1990s-early 2000s, because the books are a lot wider in the main.

  • @sunnymon1436
    @sunnymon1436 2 місяці тому

    Hubbard's reference was made in the 1970s, not the 1920s... so:
    A sharpie was a type of pre-punk rocker, almost rocker billy... easier to find on youtube if you look for the Australian version of what a SHARPIE is. I think they were opposed to mods.

    54:15 The rag-arm people would graduate into the Rehabilitation Project Force, aka chain gang labor without the prison or the chain. They wore boiler suits, ate the worst food, did the dirtiest jobs. But that would take the formation of Hubbard's little navy, and you aren't covering that until the next episode.
