    Great video! My 2004 TDI wagon was due for a fuel filter change. Did that, all good. When I went to reprime by cycling the key: no fuel, no buzz (the pump was not buzzing).. turns out the BEW tdi engines can run with their lift pumps not operating! No continuity on the pump's power contacts either. It had been dead for a while I bet. One new lift pump later and she's purring like a kitten. Real tough to keep this job clean I highly recommend folding the carpet up and out of the way and taping it with duct tape.

    Nice job! Clear and concise. One minor suggestion for the next level of your videos would be to speed up the video when you are not speaking or when you are demonstrating something that is straightforward. You might be able to shave off 5-10% of the time while retaining your videos' content and meaning.

    I just cleaned the sieve inside the pump (it needs to be opened), replaced the filter and the problem was solved. Of course, it depends on the case ...

    I have a 2004 New Beetle with a BEW Tdi and after changing the filter the ignition key prime method isn’t working, my lift pump is running briefly on “key on” but it doesn’t bring anything out of the tank- time for a new pump?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      It could have failed. Many time the pump has failed long before any noticeable systems. Opening up the fuel system is normally when people find out their lift pump has failed. If nothing comes out of the hoses and the pump sounds like it is spinning more than likely the pump is bad.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      I honestly have no idea. The customer told me that’s what he did to start the car so tried without the rag and it wouldn’t start. Perhaps the restricted exhaust allows the engine run on slightly less fuel and therefore starts up and once the engine speed increases the tandom pump effectiveness. I manual transmission car might be start by roll starting as well because of the increases engine speed.

    About to change the lift pump on my TDI AVF, long crank time when the car has been sitting a day.. took off the feed pipe from the filter and turned to ign. Pump makes some awkward noise and no diesel comes out...
    Does the lift pump run when car is running? Or is it all tandem pump?
    Car runs and pulls fine once started
    Tandem pump was replaced some two years ago

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      It should run all the time when the engine is running as far as I know.

      Haha best mistake ever...
      When I serviced the car this spring/summer I’ve accidentally swapped the lines to the filter.. So feedline went through the returnvalve🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️
      Just wondering why the car has been running for so long, and just now beginning to make trouble.
      But pump has been replaced, so has the filter and valve.. and fuel lines fitted correctly 🤣
      runs beautifully now..
      just tried it this evening, sitting from Friday afternoon and it started promptly 😂

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      Can you hear the pump run at all when it’s in the tank? You have a power or ground issue going to the pump. You could always power it up in the tank with some jumper leads and see if it will actually pump fuel. It may spray fuel so be careful. If it does pump that way then you will need to find the other issue. It could be a fuel pump relay, blown fuse or even ignition switch issue.

  • @lapazreyes

  • @crazyhawk99

    Can anyone explain why it starts with the rag plugging the exhaust?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  3 роки тому +1

      I suspect that since we had low fuel pressure we had low fuel injection quantity the back pressure of the rag in the tailpipe allows more unburnt fuel to remain in the cylinder and it mixes with the incoming fuel charge enough to fire up.

      Interesting. I have had a hard start (long crank)!after the car sets overnight, but it would start fine if the car only sat a few hours. My hard start has turned into a no start. It’s throwing no codes.

      I used a factory unit. Part number 1j0919050. I don’t know if I have ever used Magnetti Marelli parts before so I don’t know if they offer quality parts or not. I typically use factory parts because I can get them faster than the aftermarket parts.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic Of course I understand. I have got problem with cold starts. If car stands more than 12 Hours, first start Is very difficult... I changed tandem pump, have new o-rings on injectors, new fuel filter, but nothing works....What I found out Is: before first start I turn on And off the ignition for 3-4 times and then start. This method works for me. But I want to solve this problem. Could it be weak lift pump? My engine 1.9tdi pd 110kw. Sorry for my English.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +2

      It could be a weak lift pump but it seems like the system is losing its prime as well. My lift pump was weak and I had all sorts of issues. The o rings on the filter are a common place for air leaks that allow air into the system when the car is off. The o rings will often seal under pressure so when the pump turns on the air gets trapped into the system and has to be purged out by cycling the key a few times or cranking it for a while.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic Thank you very much for your answer. O-rings on the filter are new. The lift pump Is the last thing... But it realy looks like Its loosing the prime. But I do not know where. Fuel filter, valve on fuel filter with o-rings ALL new, tandem pump - new. All hoses are dry, no leaks. I will try to change lift pump. Thank you And have a nice day.

    Long cranking
    First start is ok mostly
    But when warmed up sometimes needs long cranking
    But it never starts on the turn of the key
    Have tandem pump only
    AJM engine
    No lift pump in the tank with the float
    Fuel filter is new
    Tandem pump is fairly new
    Any guess?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 роки тому +1

      Biggest problem I see is air leaks allowing the fuel to drain back. Sometimes a clear hose needs to be installed on the return hose near the filter to watch for air bubbles.

    Hey man, I have a 2010 TSI Jetta I think I’m having this issue that my filter is not giving enough pressure to my engine, because my car forces too much, I’m going 75 and it’s at 3,000 mpg, and when I drive it normally it feels like it kinda stops a little. You think this might be my problem and I have to replace the fuel filter ?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      If you havnt changed the filter in the last several years or last 40-50000 miles then it wouldn’t hurt to change it. The TSI is a gasoline turbo engine and is completely different then the car in the video which is a diesel.
      If you have a check engine light on or continue to have issues then you may want to have to have the car scanned and/or diagnosed. Thanks for checking out the channel and sorry I couldn’t help out more.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic

      Thanks for watching Jason. I tee'd into the fuel line near the fuel filter under the hood. if you have quick disconnect adapters in your kit you can hook up at the fuel lines near the firewall and coolant reservoir.

      A Moses only the Diesel engine Jetta. And the specs might be different on the older and the newer ones. VW only produced this style of TDI for a few years.

    • @amoses585
      @amoses585 5 років тому

      @@ThePracticalMechanic I got my 05 GLS to start up after adding new battery and radiator fluid. Car was sitting still for 2 months. Did a test drive. Did three 20-30 min intervals of car idling solid. However, still has a hard idle and rough start beyond that. Sometimes it'll cut off right after attempting to start.
      Should the next option be to check the fuse and the fuel pump?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      A Moses if it starts up at all the fuse powering the pump should be ok. The filter could be restricted or the orings on top of the filter could be allowing air to enter the system. Also sometime idling isn’t enough to remove the air from the system so you have to go out and drive it.
      There are a lot of things that can cause a rough idle on these PD TDI engines. The wiring harness to the injectors can fail and have a weak connection(codes will be set in engine computer) the injectors have an adjustment under the valve cover that may need to be checked, if the incorrect oil has been used the camshaft could be damaged and this will cause the injector to have a lower pressure and delayed firing.
      If it was mine and the car sat for a few months I would change the fuel filter and take it around the block a few times and see if it improves.

      I will go ahead and change the fuel filter as you stated. As a precaution if I ever change a fuel pump, should it ALWAYS be new?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      A Moses Hold up one sec. what engine does you car have? Most of the information in the video is for a diesel Jetta. If your is a gasoline Jetta it might need the throttle body cleaned and adaptation performed in order for the idle to be correct.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +1

      Not at all. The particular vehicle in the video was having a fuel pump issue and loss of prime issue. Glow plugs normally don’t all fail at once so you will have rough running and black smoke on cold morning. If you have it scanned glow codes may be stored if they have failed.
