Michael's extremely well-thought-out, sober, and well-articulated discourses are terribly missed in the ever-deepening chaos that is American politics. Brooks' was a voice we couldn't afford to lose.

There's nothing silly about it. Dore's implication was "you should agree with this because Chomsky said it." The fact that Chomsky disagreed with Dore in this case means Dore's argument contradicted itself and Seder rightly pointed that out. Of course "you should agree with this just because a smart person said it" is not a rational argument to begin with, but Dore isn't a particularly rational person.

Yeah I feel this. I always knew he was my favorite political figure but I definitely took him for granted, I am pretty ashamed of the fact I never went to see a live show or try to reach out to him. I wish I could've talked to him, he was just such a wise dude. I have been watching as much of his stuff as I can as of late because I need to absorb all of the knowledge and to fully grasp his huge amount of empathy for other human beings. I miss him so much.

Agree. My main problem with Dore is he doesn't offer any solutions. We lost 3 supreme court picks. While nobody wants to reward corporate politicians the bottom line is that until we are in a position to replace them with something better how does it help anything to replace them with someone worse? Part of the reason we are so behind other developed nations is so much time and energy is spent just trying to undo the damage that was done when Republicans were in power and we often end up not even breaking even. I guarantee most of Dore's audience doesn't understand the decades of damage done by the hundreds of lifetime conservative judges appointees to the bench. Establishment Democrats will be fine regardless of who is in power but it's the people progressives supposedly care about that get screwed every time Republicans are in power.

I remember hearing him on an old Jimmy Pardo podcast before he started doing his UA-cam show and stuff, and he was a mediocre comedian trying to do political comedy in the most hacky way, barely realising that his 'someone call the circus because all the clowns wound up in Washington' schtick was mot going to endear him with the alt comedy scene. Even Pardo thought he was being somewhat ironic about it and joked about how shit it was, and Dore was clearly annoyed... Now he has finally found his niche, doing an unironic Howard Beale, ranting to everyone who wants the spectacle of shaking their first at those damn politicians and acting like everything changed at some point (when the new deal was eroded or something), so they can emotionally identify with the confusion and rage. That's it, he has found his audience and is financially invested in it.

Wow, I'm surprised there are comments on this from recent hours. But I guess a lot of folks like me cycling through Michael's stuff now that he's gone. Frankly, I'm still (and always will be) a big fan of both Brooks and Dore. Brooks was a deeply learned man of thought, history, organization, strategy. Dore is a gut-check, the voice of a common man-- or at least a common man as he should be if he's at least anchored in justice and engaged in fighting for his own self-liberation and that of others. I'll put it this way: in a world where every working class or poor person and every MSNBC viewer was as aware, engaged, and morally grounded as Jimmy Dore, Michael Brooks would have been a mainstream media star, Bernie-Sanders-style Democrats would be ascendant, and the GOP would be the party of Tulsi Gabbard instead of Mitch McConnal. Brooks was a man for nuance-- the long view on both past and future, the weighing of relative evils and broader relative impacts. Jimmy is a man of instinct, the type that listens to his intuition to go from A-Z-- if the Dems are the bigger road block to a real worker's party, you go focus squarely on the Dems. Honestly there is value and wisdom in both kinds of thinking, and there are problems that trap both types of thinking. Lesser evils is a political trap, but so is simplifying to a good guy vs. bad guy narrative. The left needs both types of people, and both types of thinking, and most of all the left needs more people to care about and take action on the sentiments raised by both Brooks and Dore. Things only get done by more people caring about and thinking about things-- and it is good to have voices like Brooks reminding us to see the nuance, and grapple with history and complexity; and it's also good to have a guy like Jimmy around to remind us that the Dems are shit-heads. Also both of them bless me with so much laughter in a really shitty world. With all the sentiments seen around Michael Brooks passing, I'm sure there will be more Michaels in the future.

There's nothing silly about it. Dore's implication was "you should agree with this because Chomsky said it." The fact that Chomsky disagreed with Dore in this case means Dore's argument contradicted itself and Seder rightly pointed that out. Of course "you should agree with this just because a smart person said it" is not a rational argument to begin with, but Dore isn't a particularly rational person.

Yeah I feel this. I always knew he was my favorite political figure but I definitely took him for granted, I am pretty ashamed of the fact I never went to see a live show or try to reach out to him. I wish I could've talked to him, he was just such a wise dude. I have been watching as much of his stuff as I can as of late because I need to absorb all of the knowledge and to fully grasp his huge amount of empathy for other human beings. I miss him so much.

I remember hearing him on an old Jimmy Pardo podcast before he started doing his UA-cam show and stuff, and he was a mediocre comedian trying to do political comedy in the most hacky way, barely realising that his 'someone call the circus because all the clowns wound up in Washington' schtick was mot going to endear him with the alt comedy scene. Even Pardo thought he was being somewhat ironic about it and joked about how shit it was, and Dore was clearly annoyed... Now he has finally found his niche, doing an unironic Howard Beale, ranting to everyone who wants the spectacle of shaking their first at those damn politicians and acting like everything changed at some point (when the new deal was eroded or something), so they can emotionally identify with the confusion and rage. That's it, he has found his audience and is financially invested in it.

Wow, I'm surprised there are comments on this from recent hours. But I guess a lot of folks like me cycling through Michael's stuff now that he's gone. Frankly, I'm still (and always will be) a big fan of both Brooks and Dore. Brooks was a deeply learned man of thought, history, organization, strategy. Dore is a gut-check, the voice of a common man-- or at least a common man as he should be if he's at least anchored in justice and engaged in fighting for his own self-liberation and that of others.
I'll put it this way: in a world where every working class or poor person and every MSNBC viewer was as aware, engaged, and morally grounded as Jimmy Dore, Michael Brooks would have been a mainstream media star, Bernie-Sanders-style Democrats would be ascendant, and the GOP would be the party of Tulsi Gabbard instead of Mitch McConnal.
Brooks was a man for nuance-- the long view on both past and future, the weighing of relative evils and broader relative impacts. Jimmy is a man of instinct, the type that listens to his intuition to go from A-Z-- if the Dems are the bigger road block to a real worker's party, you go focus squarely on the Dems. Honestly there is value and wisdom in both kinds of thinking, and there are problems that trap both types of thinking. Lesser evils is a political trap, but so is simplifying to a good guy vs. bad guy narrative.
The left needs both types of people, and both types of thinking, and most of all the left needs more people to care about and take action on the sentiments raised by both Brooks and Dore. Things only get done by more people caring about and thinking about things-- and it is good to have voices like Brooks reminding us to see the nuance, and grapple with history and complexity; and it's also good to have a guy like Jimmy around to remind us that the Dems are shit-heads. Also both of them bless me with so much laughter in a really shitty world.
With all the sentiments seen around Michael Brooks passing, I'm sure there will be more Michaels in the future.

Hillary won the popular vote, her electoral college loss was due to her inability to appeal to the voters she needed and certainly not the fault of Jimmy or anyone else 3.
