- This is a tutorial for making red and black spiral tie dye shirts. I had an order for a red and black spiral that was meant to match a pair of shoes. I made 3 different versions of the shirt in an attempt to get the best match. Two of the shirts are Gildan Ultra Cotton T-shirts and the third is a ring spun cotton T-shirt.

They all look great for various reasons, but personally I like the one on the far left. The 'busy' looking one just draws my eyes to it more. Things like that make me look deeper to try to find patterns or just enjoy the chaos.

Good morning Angie I love the black and red shirts I just had a déjà vu moment couple weeks ago I want to make some of my red white and blue to get set up for 4 July weekend I did four shirts before I realised I was using black instead of the blue oh well I still like them and the tweezers that you were using I just ordered a couple days ago wow thank you so much for sharing as always😁✌️

We are tye dyeing shirts in the art club at school and I don't really wear bright colors much so I wanna do a black and red one :)

They all look great 👍 Funny that the #1 shirt wasn’t their #1 pick, that one was my favorite..but then, I think the white gives those darker colors a nice contrast. Thanks for doing the comparison, doing multiples always gives interesting results!

I know - right? I was really surprised with how differently the dye acted on the ring spun cotton shirt compared to the Gildan Ultra Cotton shirt.
@@FunEndeavors with gildan i have trouble getting the seams to match..i like the soft spun ones too
@@zalialyon1853 I've had that issue on Gildan ring spun ones too. The seams seem to twist. Spirals are great to put on a shirt though where the seams are twisted - it doesn't seem to be as noticeable. This ring spun was a Port and Company brand and so far I've had better success with the seams.
I like the first one. In your opinion do you think using liquid takes longer to rinse? Do you think doing IOD uses more pigment? I’m trying to use less water because of drought and weighing which is costing more in dye. Thanks Angie!
Thank you! I don't know that it makes a huge difference to rinse a liquid vs. an ice dyed shirt. In my opinion, I think the colors used make a bigger difference. I think that blue dye is one of the tougher ones to get totally rinsed out. I rinse really well in cold water to get out the soda ash, and then I rinse in hot water to get out the excess dye. If it looks like there is a lot of dye coming out of the shirt, I will just soak it in some really hot water and a small amount of blue Dawn dish soap. That way I don't have to use as much water. I will also soak several shirts together if they are in the same color family. The Dawn dish soap is good to help keep the dye from rebonding with the fabric because it helps neutralize the pH. When the water cools, I change it out and continue the soaking process until the water is almost clear.
I personally tend to use less dye when I add the dye over the ice. I use that technique to get a softer more watercolor feel to the shirt.

I love fire red, I’ve been mixing it in a lot. It does tend to lighten so I’ve been mixing it stronger. Are you thinking of anything for the upcoming 420? I’m going to go ham and try to make a sweet floral nugget center design for fun. I haven’t worked with my new greens yet so I figure it’s a good excuse to try them out. Cool shirts, I love watching everyone create things in this community. ✌🏻❤️
Thank you - I'm glad you like them! I really love red too. I think red is one of those colors that tends to weaken fairly quickly, so I try to use it not too long after I mix it.
@@FunEndeavors hmm? I never thought of that. Mine always seems to thicken up pretty quick… 🤔
@@SpaceCaptainCreations Mine thickens too the longer it sits. Most reds though have to be mixed fairly concentrated which adds to the thickening aspect.

This is a cool experiment. I like shirts 2 and 3 better. Why did you test two different colors of red? I think I like number two better only because it has more red on it and I love red.

I personally use Fire Red and Midnight Blue from Dharma when I am making patriotic shirts.
