I’ve been fortunate enough to see the Getty Villa. What a incredible gift from Getty himself. The Villa is utterly stunning. The Getty Center is one masterpiece after another. And… all free!!

I almost couldn't ask for a better art video. You guys did an exceptionally good job as usual. One gripe: don't be afraid to tell us specifically what ancient writers like Lysippus said. We can handle it, we're students of art.

Man, we went from gold toes to no toes. 😂 People don't think it be like that on Smarthistory, but it do, lol.
I'm not upset that those eyes he had were lost (the reconstruction wasn't exactly flattering), but I'd love to see that original, golden color he had.
What a powerful note to end on. The more this youth was described, the more amazing he sounded. His body does make quite the impression, but I did appreciate that distinction between real and realistic. I also appreciated the description of our bodies as "chaotic" - I've never heard that before, but it rings true. It's an orderly chaos, but chaos nonetheless.

That statue was found in the same shipwreck as the Antikythera mechanism, the oldest known computer.:))

In the right there is a memorial with just the head and ... privates ... of a person. I saw this a lot on my trip to Greece just recently. What is the purpose of that memorial and why focus on the face and privates?

I think you are referring to a herm. A Greek religious object associated with the god Hermes but also borrowed by the Romans and used in a variety of contexts.

I hope someone can use AI image tools to create a full recreation, with the colored lips and nipples and smooth skin

He certainly has a greek nose: staight, sometimes almost matching the angle of the forehead or even going all the way down in a continuous line _du front au bout du nez_ . Μια Ρινοπλαστική, anyone; 🦏
